  • This past northern hemisphere summer, I was lucky enough to join the Bighorn Sheep Test and Capture in Nevada with Beth and Mike.
As a New Zealander, it was also my first time in the United States. And a couple months later we headed to Wyoming from Canada which you may have seen in my previous video. Anyway Here's some background on why this capture was so important -- In 2003, Bighorn sheep in the Santa Rosa Range were infected with a bacterial pathogen called Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae (Movi) due to stray domestic sheep observation. The herd has been monitored since then to see if they recover from the infection, but unfortunately, Movi has persisted and expanded into Oregon. In early 2021, a ram was captured and died during the process, and lab results showed that it had the Snowstorm Movi Strain, which is known to cause high mortality and chronic lamb mortality. This, along with the slow decline of the Santa Rosa Range bighorn herd since 2004, has increased the urgency and support for a Test and Remove project.
Very grateful to have been a part of this awesome project.
