I 've nothing new to add because everyone has already said it! What a lovely place you took us to. Love how your backgrounds turned out with your sketching on top (I do this too, including with collage). I never find you rambly, always enjoy your chat! 😊👍🏼
No 1,we love a rambley vid, No 2 what a great idea the wash is,going to try that,No 3 great sketches,No 4 Thanks for the trip to Chalice Well,it’s beautiful ❤.
I recently found that Ohn Mar Win does a similar pre-painting technique with acrylic inks. Since they’re permanent when dry, you don’t have to worry about your watercolor layer disturbing them. I’m fascinated by this idea and was excited seeing you try something similar. (Ohn Mar’s video Tour of my Sketchbook: Amazing Watercolor Technique was really inspiring to me)
The garden is beautiful, I can definately see you getting inspiration and painting a garden landscape. Ooh the garden sketch came out beautiful, definately want to see more of this!
You don’t have to apologize at all. What is super helpful/fun is watching you adapt your approach to subjects based on new materials, techniques or just because. For some of us (fine me) this is exactly where I am in this creative journey and it’s good to see how it all works and sometimes doesn’t, but you worked through things and learned something for the next time. Also, that garden is wonderful. 🥰
I love this video. This is just the nudge in another direction I need at the moment as my current art work is a bit “stuck” and I need to lighten up. Very inspirational. Thank you.
Hi, as we can’t get away this year due to illness I enjoy immensely your lovely „sunny“ films & super ideas & sketches. ( Afraid I’m touring with you! Such fun! ). The process of the colour wheels I tried & really enjoyed, using them as backgrounds is a clever idea! Also ordered today bk.2 by Inga Buividavice, hope it’s as good as bk.1. Thanks so much.
Hi Helen! Rambling video? No such thing. I enjoyed the tour of the beautiful gardens and your fresh sketches to the max. I wish I was there. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us. ❤ When I entered the world of acrylic painting, I’ve always started a new project by doing a red background (cadmium red medium). It gave a certain warmth and harmony to the next layer, specially if it involved lots of green.
Hi! Thank you!! Yes, I've seen acrylic and oil artists do that and I've done it with oil pastels, though it feels like a different kettle of fish and scarier with mainly transparent mediums!
I loved your beautiful video of Chalice Well!! I'll definitely visit it (in the summertime) if I'm ever fortunate enough to visit England. Your sketch of the gate there, flanked by spirals, is beautiful, too. Thanks for sharing, Helen!
Oooh you lucky thing - Chalice Well Gardens, one of my absolute favourite places! Holds true the ancient, magical, spiritual essence of Glastonbury, a place which otherwise can seem a bit mad with excesses of the alternatives ;) lol. I really love what you're doing with the backgrounds - the first one (about 15 seconds in) is glorious how you've captured the glowing light/stormy sky look. I love it. Thank you for sharing XXX
Congrats on the graduation! Getting our kids to this point is quite a feat so bloody well done. Also, Sheffield is a place dear to my heart. It was my absolute favourite place to go clothes shopping as a teenager in the 80s. Lots of great 2nd hand shops. I take thirty quid and come back with bags full of stuff. Ah, the memories 😂. Also just started a book last night set in Camelot, based around Arthur's sister Morgan. "Le Fay" a sequel to "Morgan is my Name" by Stacey Keetch. Anyway, The gardens you are in are completely atmospheric of this book so that was completely apt - thanks! 😀. Paintings fabulous as always.
Haha, thank you!! My eldest also graduated a couple of years ago from Sheffield, and likes it so much she still lives there! One of my other sons graduated this summer too, though from York. So far they've been keeping it in Yorkshire! (Only a slight pain when we live in Cornwall!)
I ❤ everything about this video: your lovely sketches, the enchanted gardens and your chatty narration, as well as those wild colour wheels. It's a great idea tonuae the paints to create orepaingwd backgrounds. I never thought about it. I carry a white wax crayon in my art bag. I think I will use it to create the divisions for my version of the colour wheel. You have nothing to apologise! I would watch more if these videos if you decide to make more. Thank you so much!
Love the granulation and color separation you had on the last color wheel in the garden. I haven't tried randomly painting pages before I see what I'm going to paint, lately I just do splodge and scribble style and that's because if I draw first and paint later it's too tight. The only time I've ever prepared a page in advance I was just messing around with tea to see what sort of tea stain look I could get. I drew an old Vespa over it and journaled around it. That was back in 2008 and I was supposed to try coffee stains too but I had too much going on with my kids being so young and I gave up art until 2022. When I went to start again I had mostly dried up markers, or the tips were jammed inside. My paints were also dried up from my kids use. Most of it was kids art supplies anyway, non toxic because I had a child with pica. Their Jovi crayons interest me. You can sharpen them like a pencil and they seem to be made of plastic not wax. They don't work for resist, the paint settles in the texture, which could have it's own look I guess. I need to play with them some more.
The tea stain seems like a similar idea - it's just different ways of adding variety and interest to something that might otherwise get too stiff. I'm all for experimenting!
This is a wonderful video… I have watched other artists use this technique and find it interesting. It was wonderful to watch you do the same, yours finished artwork turned out beautifully. I’m going to give this a try soon. Thanks for another wonderful video!
The colour wheel you did in the garden has some GORGEOUS mixes!! That’s a neat idea to use pre-painted backgrounds. I’m not sure if that would help or hinder me? I sometimes struggle with starts (that perfectionist tendency that I constantly fight against). Love how both of your paintings turned out!!
Thanks! Yesterday I used the rest of the backgrounds - one just got covered up really, and the other turned out quite interestingly, and better than I thought! I'll definitely do some more of it anyway.

Thank you so much! I really ought to try doing more college - that sounds great!
Thanks so much for sharing this beautiful place with us! Loved the sketches, too!
Thank you!
Oh my, what a beautiful place! I like the idea of sketching over a loose watercolor background, and I really enjoyed this video. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks ever so much!
After watching your swatching video I made a ton of these triad swatch pages. So helpful and lovely for filling up a sketchbook. ❤
They're so nice to do aren't they?! I'm learning quite a bit from them!

I started doing it too, inspired by Ohn Mar Win . I use ink. I love the happy accidents of colour that result.

That's so nice, thank you! I feel like I haven't a clue where I am or where I'm going in my creative journey, so 'fun' is my watchword at the moment!

Thanks! Yep - I'm not sure where my art is going at the moment, so thought the background thing might liven things up a bit!

It's definitely an idea worth experimenting with some more!

You summed up the place perfectly! I found it a really lovely, quiet, respectful place.
I've been having more fun with the backgrounds too!
