It's a shame that this is the only authentic video of the Titanic out there. But, at the same time, that also makes it pretty special
At least it's persevered on the internet forever ❤
@@ginog5037 Indeed
99% of the population can't tell the difference between Titanic, and any ship with four funnels.
Unfortunately 60% of people interested in Titanic don't know much about her construction.
I liked the titanic before the movie in 97 and I can say you people need to get jobs.
Or anything other than the misconceptions they're fed.@@jaygeoc
They even used a video of Lusitania/Mauritania in a Night To Remember. In the beginning during the opening credits.
Knowing that movie, that doesn't surprise me.@@tinypoolmodelshipyard
It really is amazing that we even HAVE one true piece of footage of the real Titanic.
There is one well known film where tugs have their names scratched out. This would have had to be done frame by frame which is quite some effort as 16 or 18 frames a second was a common speed for silent movies. It was actually of New York tugs in New York attending the Olympic but was used as footage of the Titanic.
I thought RUclipss little algorythmns had forgotten about this channel, so it was great to see it in my feed again!
Epic footage. We are fortunate that this footage even survived to this day.
Great video as always, Sam. : )
Ever since I was in second grade I've been studying and dreaming of the Titanic and I've always wished I could have gone back in time and experienced the Titanic for myself to not only see what exactly happened that night but to endure what the Titanic had to offer I sometimes still dream about it now and again and I still say she was the most beautiful ship to ever blow the waves.
Informative, useful video for those who can’t tell the sisters apart. It’s also good that you pointed out how this is the only known video footage of Titanic in existence. Good work Sam!
It's kind of amazing to think anybody would have filmed this having having no idea the history that would unfold making what they were doing last forever.
They would have been rich for generations if it was copyrighted...
"Old news" "Not popular" Ironically, Titanic became the world's most famous ship after her sinking. And the "old news" still remains for 111 years.
he meant it was "old news" at the time. That's why there are no other videos of Titanic. It's all about the Olympic was. He has a point. The world has already seen Olympic, Titanic looking the same didn't get that much attention.
The sinking is what made Titanic popular.
The people back then didn't think much of Titanic because it was a copycat of her sister ship it looked looked exactly like Olympic.
That's what he meant by old news
Enjoy your Titanic "history" lessons every time you post a video. I've been interested in the Titanic since I was 10-years-old after seeing the movie "A Night To Remember". Having seen "The Poseidon Adventure" in the theater by myself back then in 1972, I instantly became interested in the luxury liners and the Queen Mary. Four months later, they showed "A Night To Remember" that night of April 14th on TV and I was instantly interested in learning everything I could about the Titanic and still am to this day. You've pointed out things I was never aware even with all the studying on the Titanic I've done. Thank you for your insight.
Anyone that doesn't believe this is the Titanic, you can clearly see the 'T' throughout as well as the name in the still shot that he showed
( FIRST ) I’VE SEEN THE TITANIC GUYS AND GALS!!!!! 🤩🥳🤯
i exist and yes
I REMEMBER WATCHING THIS BEFORE
That video has been on RUclips for a long time now. I think I first saw it back in 2008 and it was amazing to see the real Titanic in a video from 1911/1912. My mind was blown away.
Video is an electronic medium, and it didn't exist before the 50s in recorded form. What you are looking at is something called movie film. It uses a light sensitive emulsion of chemicals to record images. The film was transferred to video since the Internet is a purely electronic medium, but we still call it a film because it was originally filmed on movie film. Yeah, the misuse of terminology does irritate me. It's like calling an apple and orange because they are both fruit. Film isn't even dead. It has come back as an artistic medium.
A British Pathé news reel, to be exact, and the safest way to describe is to call it 'footage'. A lot of footage that survives is from this type of material. In later years, it's also possible that we get to see some ships in movies as well. Like the Cap Arcona and the Asturias as well as the Ile de France, for instance. As you say, actual videos came much later, and are an inferior medium. Probably what we nowadays mostly mean by a video is something that is in a digital format.
Film, specialy under old camera lenses has an unique presentation compared to digital recordings. For instance The Lighthouse (2019) used celuloids alongside vintage 1940's lenses and looks like something from another world.
But yeah, on the terminology debate you are correct on the definition, however as it happens from time to time, most people knows this kind of presentations as "videos" so they will continue with the trend of eliminating the correct definitions from the public discourse.
Thanks for pointing this out! It's a minor complaint, but nonetheless irritating to hear film footage referred to as "video", and an antique film camera being called a "video camera" makes me cringe. I'm also bugged when people record something on their phones and refer to it as "filming", by the way!
The Titanic was the equivalent of Apollo 13. No one cared by the time she sailed, just like no-one cared when the 3rd lunar mission launched.
The priest who took his camera with him during the voyage, was really interesting photography in retrospect. He disembarked upon the stop over at Queenston(Cohn)Ireland.
The other photograph was taken of the iceberg thought to be responsible for sinking the titanic. It was taken from a lifeboat by a survivor who sold it for $10USD. It is now a museum photograph in the National Archives and a copy is shown at the titanic museum in Halifax.
I think the iceberg photograph was taken from the ship that came to recover bodies or it could be from one of the crew members of Carpathia.
Go and check it for yourself, the photograph was taken in exchange for $10. It was taken by a survivor while in the lifeboat or shortly after wards when aboard the Carpathia. It is on display at the museum in Halifax, as well as the exhibition in Las Vegas. With a sign that explains the significance of this photograph, and the story behind it.@@gokulgopan4397
I gotta say it but it was film, not video. Also films were coming into their own by 1912 so much so that there would be no less than three films about or inspired by the Titanic within a year or so of the disaster.
Totally blown away! Oh! And the photo of the film camera you've shown us I believe to be one of George Melies creations. Very basic and rudimentary but they were in use during that decade up until the onset of WWI.
I got a titanic memorabilia pack for Chanukkah this year and it’s so incredible! I’m so glad there is footage of such an amazing ship
Omg I saw this video so many times and thought it was Olympic because of the open windows on top. Thnx you for clearing that up!
I love all these Titanic videos you make. You describe everything so perfect.
Thank you, I also rewatch many of them 😊😍🙌💯
Yes, that footage is THE REAL TITANIC and the enclosed promenade was a last minute idea as well as adding a few rooms to make TITANIC heavier.
Another giveaway that the videoed ship is Titanic is that the bridge wings protrude a bit from the side of the ship; i.e. the outboard edge of the port bridge wing pictured is not flush with the edge of the A Deck superstructure.
Though I believe that change was made to Olympic in 1913, so basically the caveat is that if that video is indeed from 1912, it's of Titanic.
Didn’t know that! Thanks
@@HistoricTravels It's also a helpful little tidbit if you get stuck in a conversation with one of those "switch theory" nutters, seeing as this distinction is/was plainly visible on the wreck.
You seem so educated about the ships love your passion ❤
Nice work. Great attention to details.
Having said that, there is no “video” in 1912 (3:56)
Motion picture cameras (with film) will be a more accurate term.
The original footage was shot on film, not video.
You may say “having seen the footage” or a video transfer from film……
Please refrain using the word “video” when referring to film footages.
Keep up the good work!
Thank you for saying this. I didn’t want to be a pedant but comment after comment repeating “video” was just about to make me explode! 😡 😝😁
1 other small yet important detail you need to look at for in the footage to know it's indeed Titanic is the bridgewings slightly extended outwards since Olympic's bridgewings were flush with the super structure
That is correct. Also, you can see very specific configuration of the windows on the B deck (below the promenade), unique to the Titanic. Although it is not clear here, because this is not full length footage.
This is so cool. Thanks for sharing this Sam.
Imagine if one day someone found a film from the voyage itself. But I guess nobody had a video camera onboard there. And the film would most likely be at the bottom of the ocean now if there even was one
I can't believe my great granda would have seen this (he worked at H&W at that time) it's amazing 😮😮 Also I cant get over the sheer size of her...like you Sam, it blows my mind! I wished since I was a kid that someone would build a scale replica so I can see the size in person 😍😍
They are making Titanic II in real life, not sure what the status on it is now though.
@@gtaitz I'm pretty sure I read that's been cancelled or the project went bankrupt 😭
Hopefully not!@@missscarling
@@gtaitz they haven't updated their website since 2018 apparently 😭
Hope they find funds to continue the project soon!@@missscarling
Merry Christmas Bro 👍👍👍🎁🎁🎁🎁 Greetings from Helsinki, Finland 🇫🇮
I was on livestream, I want a historian like you to review Roblox Titanic, my honest opinion is that its just as good as Titanic SOS
Another difference is the bridge wings. Titanic bridge wings extended over the sides. Olympics did not. Olympics were extended during a refit after titanic sank
people tend to forget just how massive Olympic, Titanic and Brittanic were. i mean look at the comparison in that footage. for 1910-1916 these ships were huge!
Sure had some big wigs on her for such an "unpopular" ship. Jacob Astor, Isiodor and Ida Strauss, Benjamin Guggenheim, Molly Brown. To name a few. One of the reasons this wreck is so famous is because of who it killed.
That list could have been even longer, if, for example, some other prominent people had not cancelled their reservations to travel aboard the Titanic-the Vanderbilts (although they left their personal servant, who perished) or J.P.Morgan himself, who decided at the last minute not to travel.
@BorivojeSinik-eh4qd almost like they knew something was gonna happen and they had a meeting at Jekyll Island to attend
Is it just me, or this guy, like many, is addicted to the titanic
Titanic had a second sister ship the Britannic and the wreck is nearly fully intact.
There's a saying amongst the Belfast shipping industry, she was alright when she left here it was only when she was handed over to an English captain and a Scottish navigator it all went wrong. There's also the saying the Irish are very clever people and if it wasn't for alcohol the Irish could have ruled the world.
Looks to me like they hadn't painted the funnels yet, either.
You should add that video footage in the description below so we can see it
Merry Christmas Sam!!
It’s hard to believe such a huge ship is now sitting at the bottom of the ocean rotting away.
I know this is the wrong video to say this but I find it funny how everybody claims there was a swap for both ships. Here's the thing, like you keep saying to look at the deck. Olympic was open Titanic was closed
The ship at the bottom of the Atlantic shows you straight out. The deck is closed not opened. So therefore, there was never a swap, and the Titanic is the one sitting there, not the Olympic
I think that video was also used for the 1979 movie raise the titanic, as they flat out cut out the ship and took off two of the funnels for the part when the ship arrives at new york, which might explain why you didnt think it was real, and why I cant help but think it looks like a cutout, as the first time I saw it, it legitimately was
It's like ARKANE's 2017 Prey. I'm playing it for the fifth time, and with every playtrough, I discover something new😀
May I ask where you got your models of the Olympic and Titanic?
Wasn't there some actual footage found of the launch later on? Seems like I remember James Cameron wanting to use it in the movie Titanic but was told no actual footage existed only to have footage discovered sometime after the movie was released.
Thanks Sam for the real Titanic story love the channel had a cousin that was on the Titanic when it sank his name was named Percival Franklin Sharp he was either a 2nd or 3rd class passenger he died on the Titanic he got on it at the SouthHampton stop
Merry Christmas Sam
Astounding, beautiful and haunting
one time my history teacher confused R.M.S Teutonic with Titanic, baring in mind it wasnt the name thst confused them it was the ship itself.
I wonder how many photographs (still or motion) were shot on board Titanic during her voyage, but went down with the ship. Would it be possible for any film to survive a century at the bottom of the ocean?
I love your videos so much!!
Merry Christmas
In RUclips I found a video of the titanic leaving Southampton (i think)
I was wondering if that video is also fake
Please let me know
Would be great to see this footage in color.
Excellent video and explanation as usual! What is that hanging down by the starboard anchor?
Workman's toilet.
@@Dizzy19. Seriously, really?
@@ginog5037 Yes, really xx
This is true Titanic footage.
I’d there a color version of this? That would be amazing
The ship on the right is Olympic and on the left is Titanic
Brother! Can you provide info on the Titanic's anchor at the stern section? Apparently weighs in at 15 tons...how hasn't the wreckage gave way with such immense weight?
Correction. Video cameras were not around in 1912. That'd be film cameras.
Sam when is the Rms Queen Mary video going to be released?
I'm subscribed but I'm not getting notifications of new videos.
can you do a time line of the RMS Majestic
wow only one video ? humm interesting how the OG footage is super Rare !
but wasn't there also footage of her Leaving Belfast ?
The bridge in the footage looks like there was no paint in the bridge's winghs and even on the superstructures!
I really don't like people who claim to present real footage of Titanic but in reality just scam us
God I wish I had Sam as a teacher
I suppose B Deck is also a good place to look, especially with Deck plans. But A deck is the first place i would look l.
Maybe someone went back in time and made sure to record footage of it knowing how significant it would become 🤔
Also 1 ship inclosed windows has more than the other
Thats the Olympic. The promenade deck isnt glasses in
I wonder who filmed the footage.
Yes the story of this lost rare footage & it being found goes that there was this old lady who I think had a family memember I can't remember the exact relation to the old lady the family member was. The old lady found this rare video of Titanic at the back of her shed under a work bench or bench in a metal film canister this information came out with the massive buzz of James Camerons Titanic being first released in cinemas in 1997 because obviously it stirred Titanic mania & brought Titanic back to life again. Because they ended up making copies of this video footage & releasing it on VHS video.
Do you have any source material for this? Would love to make a video about it.
@@HistoricTravels To be totaly honest no I don't sorry about that
I think it may be something to do with Lori Johnston.
True😊
Real video in 1912 at least 15 years before Television based CRTs I think you mean film.
Hi sam
Where did you find that footage?
Ive seen footage of it sinking. Very cinematic.
I heard that the Britannic was a little bigger than the Titanic and it looks like the bow section is a tiny bit longer than the Titanic.
She is. She's slight wider in beam than Titanic and Olympic by just two feet. She is supposed to be the same length as Titanic, which is just inches longer than Olympic. With all the other improvements, and completed as liner, she would've grossed over 50,000 tons and her displacement over 53,000 long tons.
So the olympic is probably the titanic that sank and the titanic is the olympic now (maybe)
Definitely not.
Strange 911 was September 11
I can’t really tell what the name plate says because it’s so old and it’s a bit blurry
Just zoom in i can’t make out the entire name but i can see T I at the beginning therefore its titanic also i trust this RUclipsr
That does make sense but it’s hard to zoom in on a old video
Titanic is cool
Titanic is da goat
It’s weird how ships get famous only after they have sunk.
Is it the tragic story or is it fate? But yea i know there was 1 difference between titanic and the Olympic.
I just forgot which was had what.
It's like how some artists and stuff are only famous after a tragic early death.
People love lost potential and tragedy
I reposted a video of what the makers saying this was the titanic sinking. I asked if this was real. The group I was in kicked me out of the group. For asking if it was titanic.

eh… 1912 videokamera ? …. must have been an early Betamax. ;)
This is definitive proof that the smallest of details exist i saw this video before and thought it was the Olympic hence the open promenade and got into a whole heated debate with this guy on RUclips that if was the Olympic and nlt the Titanic i feel stupid now
This was a good information video. 👌
If its got TITANIC written on it could it be the TITANIC 🤔
👍
I was expecting NEW FOOTAGE but no this is just old news.
The titanic name are just stains
Is it really necessary to say, “pre sinking”.
