This song is one of my absolute faves by the Beatles! John Lennon said he was thinking of Wilson Pickett when he wrote this song! It's soulful and rocking at the same time. That was Lennon playing the lead guitar solo!

There’s a really hilarious video of the Beatles singing “Roll over Beethoven“ on a Dutch TV show. These guys start dancing in the background and you can tell that the Beatles are trying so hard not to crack up. They keep glancing behind them. George is singing lead and Paul and John are in hysterics behind him. 💕💕 The video begins with George trying to make a few comments in the Dutch language. Anyway enjoy the Beatles!

Jblethal, you're a kid after my own heart. I enjoy your reactions so much. You see the value in music that told a story. You appreciate what the older songs/musicians had to offer and what is sorely lacking in most of the music we hear today. There's some good stuff out there, you have to go searching for it, though. Keep up the good work, keep learning. You seem like a really good guy. Blessings to you and yours.

Thanks to the videos and recordings, all new generations will see and hear The Beatles. They still cast a mystical spell over people with their early live performances. When they retired from the road and started creating in the studio, they led a generation through the trying times of the 1960s. Almost sixty years later, they continue to gain new fans. George said, " The Beatles will exist without us. " He couldn't know how right he was in saying that!

I am a 75 year old man originally from the UK, and I grew up with the Beatles. However arrogant and superior this sounds, it is only people of our age who know what the Beatles were and understand their impact was on the world. They appeared in the UK in the early sixties. Up until then it was Elvis, other American singers, and their equivalents from other countries. In the UK we had Cliff Richard. Then suddenly there was this record called Love Me Do, which wasn't really very good. We were told they were from Liverpool, and that the city had this club called the Cavern where all the Liverpool groups played. THEN I think Please Please Me came along. This was a song that the like of had never been heard. It went straight to No.1. A few singles later came the first LP (album). Then they played in Europe a few times, and then some DJ in the States played I want to Hold Your Hand, and the switchboard at the radio stion was swamped with calls like never before. No-one in the States had heard anything like it. Then the hair cuts became known, their clothes, other unique songs, and the world had caught Beatle mania. British music ruled the world, and the Beatles music just developed with every album. They single handedly progressed popular music to what it is today. They composed their own music, and no-one in the world came anywhere near them in terms of compositional ability and creativity. They also had a not unpleasant cockiness, and they clearly didn't mind what people thought of them. Their music just improved and developed for years until they broke up. They developed popular music into what it is today. Don't forget, when they came there was virtually nothing. All the popular music you here today came after the Beatles. For example, at the end of every year in the Nwetherlands where I live, theTop 2000 most requested songs are played for that year. There are no pre Beatles songs except perhaps a few Elvis ones. And the Rolling Stones first big hit in the UK was composed by the Beatles, I wanna be your Man. The Beatles influenced the world in a way that no artists had ever done beefore or since. so that while Queen are a wonderful group, and Bohemian Rhapsody is voted best song every year here in the Netherlands, they cannot be compared to the Beatles. Nobody can. If you like, they could be described as a freak of nature. But you had to have lived though to really get them and their influence. Brian Oosterbeek Netherlands

You are not alone! Notice that there are NO stage monitors and yet, above the screaming, they were in tune. As a four- piece band, they had a sound everyone tried to emulate. Their early work, ( 1964-'66) was phenomenal. In a very literal way, they changed the world. Music, fashion, culture, everything.

The Beatles certainly had the beat. They had a way with putting together music, rhythms, and lyrics that could shake you to the bones. They were all very good at what they did, and they had people like George Martin who produced and helped arrange their songs into a powerful listening experience. When you'd hear them doing something new, there was a familiarity about it.

Many Beatles fanatics put down their early music. It's true that their real innovations came with their later music which was totally new and broke all the molds. But, in the early '60's there were very few artists who played "true" rock music. Chuck Berry, Little Richard and the Beatles brought home that real rock feeling. Still love ALL the Beatles music.

  • @geraldbalzano431

I've probably heard hundreds of songs based on the 12-bar-blues progression. In this song, John Lennon takes the basic 12-bar blues progression and makes it his own, turns it into something new and different. When I first heard the song "You Can't Do That" way back when, it was one of the very first indications to me - even more than the big Beatles hits of the time - that there was some extra special musical genius at work within the songs the Beatles were creating.

you caught the 'bug' (pun intended). if you are going to dig into these things, what might be fun is to do it in chronological order. a couple songs from each album (if not entire albums). you will see their progression and growth as a band. around the time of Rubber Soul things took a major turn from them....going from a very good rock n roll and pop band to something way beyond. helps you realize how and why they were so very influential

JB the Beatles were the biggest band on the planet for almost a decade. You haven't really experienced their music properly only listening to live concert recordings that are bad quality and full of screaming. That's more about "Beatlemania". The Beatles were at the forefront of fashion with their long hair and collarless suits. They looked alien. They were quick witted, irreverent, charming and funny. The fans went crazy. Beatlemania was as much about those things as it was about their music which at the time was also soooo different from what was on the radio. You'd probably have to watch a documentary (and the movie "A Hard Day's Night) to really understand the scope of their popularity and influence. Their albums have to be experienced beginning to end. A Hard Day's Night, Rubber Soul, Help!, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, "The Beatles" which is better known as the white album), Magical Mystery Tour, Abbey Road, Let It Be. You really have no idea. It's like what your grandma said, you can't know Abba having only listened to Waterloo. There is so much more.

Queen's live performances are almost always epic, but I think The Beatles live performances aren't always as good. Not their fault, it seems like especially when they were in TV studios, it was a smaller space, the sound system picked up too much of the screaming girls, the picture wasnt always crisp, the mics were sometimes unbalanced and one of them would sound too loud or quiet. The studio versions are usually much better because they had more control over the balance and the sound quality was great.
