great stuff as usual, Bobby! I am a reaper user. I also don't really have a chance to record live drums so have been using stuff like EZdrummer2. What kind of different approach(es) would you take to mixing a completely sampled kit? It already sounds so close to mix ready to my ear which is, admittedly, still in training!
Wow! Those are some pretty large cuts, especially on the kick. Is that pretty typical or did this recording just call for it because the drum didn't sound that great or something? Also, just curious. I know you use the "behind the bookshelf technique" for your room mic. Do you typically only do mono room mic or do you go stereo? Thanks! Great video. I was a long time PT user and now use Reaper exclusively. Excellent program and can't beat the price.
Hello Matt! For some reason (maybe there's a way to adjust this) the graphic in the Rea EQ is shallow and makes the cuts look bigger than they actually are. I was only reducing those ranges by 6-8 dB which is relatively modest. I recorded this way back in 2011, so I was using 57's as room mics and placed them as far back in the room as possible. This was way before I came up with the "shelf" technique. Sometimes I use a mono room, sometimes I use a stereo pair...and other times I'll use all three. It depends on what mood I'm in. You can achieve a great room sound with a single mic.
Great sound! Question, in Reaper, how do you have your mixer window all the way to the top?? When I open up the mixer window in reaper it only goes up say 80% up the way but I notice you always have it 100% like in pro tools. How do you achieve this?? Silly question i know lol
