For those who did not grow up listening to him in the 90's, this man is the last remaining legend of k pop. In fact, he invented k pop by introducing modern (at the time) american music to the Korean culture. They refer to him as the "president of culture" because he exposed a lot of the hypocrisy from the government/media through the lyrics of his songs (a lot of which that got banned back then).
Government hated him from giving the students "the wrong message", media hated him because he guarded his personal life and was notorious to refuse interviews on their million variety shows (unlike current Korean celeb who have everything dissected 24/7). The music companies hated him because he exposed how lopsided the profit sharing was between artists and labels. Yet all of them sucked it up and rode his popularity wave where he owned the 90's (I'd argue he was as popular as MJ in Korea during that time).
When news surfaced that he was secretly married to "random popular actress of the time" and subsequently divorced, the media smelled blood and created a big scandal out of nothing. Noting how he married her when she was 19 (i.e pedo allegations,) despite the fact he was 6 year older which really isn't the end of the world. The BS was so bad that he was forced to grant these retarded interviews into his life to clarify the non story about his marriage.
People have to remember there was a time when real musicians actually wrote their own lyrics and composed their own music. Unlike the current K pop factory where they pick out cute girl/boys that doesn't have a terrible voice then hook them up with a fashion designer who tells them what to wear, an actual musician that tells them what to sing, a composer who makes them a catchy beat and finally a dance choreographer to show them cool moves along with a PR department that carefully craft their image. It's really sad how so many untalented kids get this treatment and then when their contract is up, they "retire" and you never hear from them again.

Hands down the best musician to come out of Korea.. It's really weird for me to see people associate STJ with K Pop. In my humble opinion he went beyond just Kpop.. especially after he made the comeback with Ultramania. Also, He's a class above any other idol bands that followed him

    •  9 лет назад +30

SeoTaiji might not know this (because he lives in his own world), but he has many non-Korean fans following him for years, we don't know much about Korea in the 90s, we respect his past, but we love him because of his present, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th are my favorite ones ^^ we trully love him! I feel like a lot of people won't appreciate this episode because they don't realize who Seo Taiji is or how big of a deal he was (and still kinda is) since his peak was before this generation. Still, as someone who wasn't apart of that generation and learned about him afterwards, I think this episode is still really enjoyable. He normally has a mysterious image and I was shocked to see how gentle and cute (lol) he actually is in person. He seems a lot more approachable now than he did before and I think that was kind of the point of having him be the focus of this episode. There weren't any other guests because frankly they would've gotten ignored with him there, so I think it's kinda good he had the episode to himself. Anyways, just sharing my opinion, not trying to offend anybody...
p.s does this mean the late night cafeteria will be coming back? :)

I'm very glad I watched this episode all the way through. I've only been listening to kpop since around Shinee's debut, and learned about the older big idol groups, like Seo Taiji, SES, HOT, etc. and since I'm not very fond of Seo Taiji's music, I thought I'd still watch it to see what his personality is like, and I can honestly say I'm super happy I sat through it, and I enjoyed every minute of it.
You can see how much all of the MCs admire him, and kind of thought of him as a quiet legend, but him making jokes, and being comfortable was just great, he even looks like he's a newb to variety. I hope younger idols who are also popular now watch this episode and try to be more natural on TV, they shouldn't pretend to laugh, or be happy just to please fans, it looks like Seo Taiji is fairing well, in his public and private life, these days.

TL;DR, I never said a group or person in specific, and "making their way into american music industry"? don't make me laugh they've all failed, being known by some people across the sea doesn't mean advancing to their market sorry. If JYP hadn't sent WG to the US for so much time they wouldn't have flopped so hard when they came back. Let's just hope the same doesn't happen to Ailee and CL. Btw, I have "oppas and unnies" for whom I care too, but I never lied in that post.

To all the people who don't know what happened between Seo Taiji and Lee Ji Ah, here are the facts:
Seo Taiji revolutionized music in Korea back in the day (1992-1996), introducing to Korea music genres such as rap. Seo Taiji & The Boys was THE most popular band back then, and there were die hard fans of the group (literally). Seo Taiji was the main of the group, but he decided to retire and leave to the US so that he could enjoy his marriage life with Lee Ji Ah. Fans literally committed suicide after hearing the news. I'm not kidding. Some die hard fans really killed themselves.
You could understand Taiji's position during that time, Lee Ji Ah had been his lover for years, during the time Seo Taiji and The Boys was active, and if the news of their marriage had gone public, it would have been dangerous for Lee Ji Ah. Fans killed themselves when the group disbanded, who's to rule out a die hard fan attempting murder? Fans were scary as fuck back then, and they're still pretty scary now (although not as hardcore).
Seo Taiji did all he could for Lee Ji Ah and their marriage. The whole reason why he left the group and left to the US was so that they could live their lives without having to hide from the public eye. Considering that the two met in the States, living in the US shouldn't have been too uncomfortable for them.
On Healing Camp, Lee Ji Ah said that the secluded life was too much for her. But she knew full well what kind of life she would lead when marrying Taiji. Taiji did all he could by disbanding the extremely popular group after just 4 years, to move to the US with her so they could have the freedom to go out in public. He loved making music, and even turned down an offer for a 10 million dollar contract because at the time, he truly believed he would retire and spend the rest of his life with Lee Ji Ah in the States.
Somewhere along the line, Ji Ah wasn't content with her life in the States, and wanted to go back to Korea, to perhaps pursue her career. Going back to Korea meant that she had to keep her relationship with Taiji private, as it would be dangerous for her. She couldn't handle it and filed for divorce.
Whether you blame Taiji or Ji Ah, both weren't at fault. They kept their marriage secret for over a decade, and did all they could.

During the married relationship she was asked to sign non disclosure & never reveal marriage to him. And they only separated when Taiji decided to come back to Korea to start his solo career in 2000 alone while she stayed back in USA. Only in 2005, she came back to Korea & her career started 2006.

He's so gentle and soft spoken. You can tell that he has learned a lot, and I respect him for that. Yes, he made mistakes, yes he did some bad things in his life, but he is human, and he cannot take back what he has done, so instead, he learned from it, and it takes a lot for someone to be able to admit their mistakes and figure out a way to improve themselves so that they don't make the same mistakes over and over again. Yes, what he did was wrong, but come on people, he was young, extremely popular and still trying to figure out how to deal with things, not that that is a good excuse but it is legitimate in some aspects. He even says that he respects IU for her ability to portray her emotions when she's still so young, and then says that hes able to do so a lot better now. I understand people being upset, and rightfully so, however was he supposed to repeat this with his second wife? Obviously not. And another thing is, we don't know what really happened, we can only go off of what his ex is saying, and what he agrees to based on the fact that he most likely feels terrible. I'm not saying we should treat him as a victim, but we shouldn't make him a villain either. He should simply be treated as a human being. We weren't there, we didn't see what went down when they were alone, we don't have exact conversations, and therefore I don't think we should judge him based solely on the interview his ex wife did or what happened. He is an amazing musician, and from what I can see, he is becoming very wise. To me, that is all that matters. He is still learning and I'm sure he will continue to learn throughout his life, and that is good thing. I hope to see more from him in the future.

Thank you KBS for this episode. Its really amazing to see Seo Taiji in a new light, as compared to his introverted persona he has portrayed for a wile. Im so happy he went on the show and showed no reservations to any of the questions. His occasional lightheartedness was definitely great to see. I cant wait to see more of him. :)

Not surprised at all the comments about the episode being boring.
You simply had to have been there to experience the extent of his 90s fame, to understand why every single host fawns over STJ's presence, and why his appearance warranted a "special" with a unique format.

He was married to an actress lee ji ah. Back then, it was a secret as they were married abroad. anyway, it ended up in a messy divorce and it was such a big deal in korea as his fans didn't even know that he was married. She appeared in a show called Healing Camp, and told her feeling and I think thats why people thought he was a bad guy. and since he never told his feeling regarding that matter (I think it was because of his mysterious image) he has been misunderstood (well, now he told his side in happy together). But he is still popular. And his marriage to actress lee eun sung has been good to him as now he seems more approachable...

After I got to know about KPOP and Korean cultures, I've been hearing so many things about Seo Taiji and how he's a legend in KPOP, but never actually sees him in person in shows, like in a variety show. Glad that Happy Together managed to bring him! He seems so quiet and reserved, but I like how he managed to funny comments from time to time. One of the best HT episode I've ever watched. :)
Addition: I read some of the comment before I watch the show, and now I've finished it, I can't understand why people said that he's boring and "gave a bad vibe." I think this episode is really interesting to watch.. (This is coming from someone who didn't experience the craze over him when he was at his peak and basically know almost nothing about him. I wasn't even 1 y/o when he debuted.)
