I really appreciate that you're prioritizing older fantasy series. I have discovered them for myself last year and am happy to see others giving them a chance. Subscribed to see your thoughts on them!
Thanks for the comment and welcome to the channel! The next cluster of videos will include 3-4 Fantasy through history reviews from last year (just have to wait for my schedule to open up). Again, thanks for watching and subscribing! We are glad to have you here :)
@@markmunroe-hz8rf I wonder how many fantasy readers read a little crime as well? For myself, I have read most of the Pendergast novels and of course, my favorite, Sherlock Holmes.
Ooh some fantastic series on the list man (also love the lego in the background ! that's an awesome collection). Excited to hear your thoughts on Grace of Kings, its honestly one of my fav books of all time (and book 2 is also fantastic)
I’m really glad I’m going into it blind. I feel like it’s setting me up for success. The legos are my brother in laws, I am living with his while applying for jobs and thought it would make a great background. Thanks for watching and the support :)
Whenever I talk about malazan it becomes more and more of a priority because so many people comment about how amazing it is. Im curious to see if I get through it this year. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel :)
@@markmunroe-hz8rf Yes, but I am sad to say they were a less than average read for me. For sword and sorcery, I much preferred Elric to Conan, with the caveat that I listened to Conan instead of reading it, and I think I would’ve found more joy actually reading it.
@NICKREADSFANTASY what do you think is the problem with today's fantasy fiction? Also, what're thoughts on A Song of Ice and Fire? In truth, I'm sick of trilogy series and I am looking for single read fantasy novels or books that are episodic but interconnected. Have you ever read The Stardust Thief?
@@markmunroe-hz8rf Not sure if there is a “problem” per se. More of an evolution of publishing in the genre. It’s almost economical. Fantasy is more popular, with increasing demand in general. In the past, the demands were low and specific. Lotr increased demand for Lotr type stories, so that is what filled the void. Black company increased demand for Grimdark, so books followed to fill that void. Harry Potter increased demand for fantasy among ages and cultures and religions, with at the time, a limited supply of authors interested in the genre. Which created the golden age of fantasy in my opinion. The low supply of authors in the genre was crucial as well. Now, there is an over saturation of authors writing to fit publishers high demand voids instead of focusing on the stories they truly wish to tell. The demand right now is “romantasy,” or what I call CORN with dragons, and it’s taint is seeping into everything. Also, this is all off the cuff, me talking into my microphone while taking my baby for a walk, with multiple other factors that is deserving of an entire video itself. Time is itself a factor, as when we read older books it’s typically the best of the best because they are the only ones that withstand the test of time. As far as a song of ice and fire goes, even unfinished I consider it one of the greatest series of all time. However, I doubt George RR Martin will finish it. he is the perfect example of what I consider a great writer, but a very poor author. Which essentially means, what he does write is amazing, but he lacks either the discipline or desire to finish. I personally blame the TV series for him not finishing. It has made him too comfortable in a lavish lifestyle and got rid of any motivation for him to finish the theories. Now I’m going off on a rant about discipline being greater than motivation lol, so to answer your last question no, I haven’t read the Stardust thief.
Hey man. You have like identical tastes to me and I love that, even got the Legos down. Gotta say, Malazan is a tough one to recommend. I went in expecting flowery prose and really difficult to grasp story. Instead I felt like it was just kind of....there. Lots of things people cited as confusing, just seemed like an idea with poor explanation or description. I have heard Deadhouse Gates is better when compared to GOTM. I won't trash it too much though, it was a fantastic story and for the US Audio Book Kruppe was such a fun character to listen to.
NICE!!!! They are my brother in laws legos while I am doing some interviews in Texas, but I have my own as well lol I have heard that about malazan before, so it’s nice to hear the opinion from someone with similar taste. Thanks for watching and subscribing! Glad to have you here on the channel and I appreciate the comment and support :)
Wow! We have 15 of the same books! Same with Dandelion Dynasty - on my TBR because of Booktube. I’m re-reading WoT and I agree - push through the slog.
I'm pretty much the same with the Dandelion Dynasty, I've heard enough people saying it's one of the best series ever in ther past couple of years that I really need to read it once and for all lol I did read a Ken Liu short story this year (or last year now I guess) and it was excellent so I have high hopes! Also happy new year! Wish you the best for the channel and for yourself :)
Very impressive list. Granted, I haven’t seen too many of your videos (yet) but have you read any of Mark Lawrence’s fantasy series? I’ve just started his latest Library Trilogy series but I definitely want to check out his others, such as the Broken Empire series, Book of the Ancestor series and the Red Queen’s War series. The Library Trilogy is my foray into Lawrence’s fantasy writing but it’s a bit different than most of the fantasy books I’ve read in life. But so far I’m really enjoying it.
I haven’t read any of Mark Lawrence yet. He’s on my radar because of his impact in self published fantasy, but I haven’t found his books on the top of my TBR yet. Honestly, it’s been a while since I’ve done an update, but I am finding myself more and more drawn to works of the past over more modern fantasy. Since January I have read The Wizard, reread citadel of the autarch, and read Urth of the New Sun all by Gene Wolfe, and he inspired me to reread Tolkien this year (which I don’t believe was on this TBR). But before I got stuck in Wolfe, and now Tolkien, I did get through 3-5 of these books on the list. Happy to have you as part of the channel :) hope you’re enjoying the videos!
@@NICKREADSFANTASY Thanks, I love your channel. Even though I’m expanding my reading right now to explore thrillers and horror/Stephen King, it’s great to see a fellow fantasy reader read so many different kinds of fantasy literature, quite a bit I’ve never even heard of! But definitely want to explore in the future.
I hear that a lot!! Everybody differs on where they believe the slog begins. I’m hoping I don’t see it at all lol Thanks for the comment and the support of the channel :)
Malazan better be in here mate. Edit: im so happy. Please stick with it, I would suggest trying the first 3 and if they don't click it is defo not the series for you.
