  • In this video, Chris Macklin (IH Aboriginal Health Knowledge Facilitator) and Mollie Bono (Project Elder Advisor) introduce Aboriginal Cultural Safety in health care as a concept.
In March 2017, all regulated health professions in British Columbia, including all Provincial Health Authorities, the BC Ministry of Health and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC, declared their commitment to making the health system more culturally safe for First Nations and Aboriginal people. In signing the Declaration of Commitment to Cultural Safety and Humility, BC health professionals are the first in Canada to make the pledge.

Increasing the level of cultural safety in the health care system through approaches such as cultural safety, cultural humility, health literacy and relationship-based care will assist in improving the quality of health services for First Nations and Aboriginal people. This series of videos aims to highlight the above commitments that were made to advance cultural safety in healthcare.
Seven physicians from diverse backgrounds were interviewed about their journeys toward cultural safety. In the subsequent videos, the physicians give practical and heart-felt advice on the implications of cultural safety, and how it can be meaningfully integrated into health practice. This video series was produced by the Interior Health Journey to Aboriginal Cultural Safety Program.
