That extra piece is actually used if your pipe has threads on both ends, the ring is installed afterwards to prevent the moveable clamp piece from falling off the pipe.
Sir you saved me from total chaos! I figured the collar would be removed, but alas I continued on with it and got the clamp and pipe wedged together....now were all good. You saved me from using a grinder to get them apart
So glad to hear that, apparently the spring is to be used on the back end of a threaded pipe to act as a “stopper” but personally I’ve found no need to use them, Plus they’ve only come in half the packages I’ve purchased!
Hey I’m glad I could help!! And trust me, More people than you think I’ve been going through the same thing! So I found out that spring can go on the end of the pipe as a stop or if you want it for instance if for some reason the locking side strips out. I think it’s completely unnecessary and it’s pointless because they only provided it in half the packages that I have purchased!! Be well and stick around!
Good Deal. Thank you for the clarification. I spent 5 frustrating minutes trying to get that spring on the pipe. I quickly realized that it’s nothing more than for shipping.
Ha! I only spent about 5 minutes trying to figure out what the stupid fucking spring was for before I googled it and found your incredibly helpful video.
Great video and explanation. 5:26 - The spring-looking thing you’re holding should really be place at the tail end of the pipe itself. You first have to thread the end of the pipe where you made the cut, then thread in the spring as if you’re threading in a cap or nut. It’s just meant to stop the end of the clamp from sliding off.
I spent 20 minutes trying to get that absurd coiled collar on - very frustrating since they don't have instructions on the package (and I don't know how you ripped that package open with your bare hands - I had to cut it open with scissors which was even difficult)... then I decided to come inside and see if there was anything online showing how the ring fit inside the sliding end - and you were the only video out of about 5 that i watched that explained it... you ROCK bro - no brain damage there...
😂😂😂 "this is why we work out….to open packages "…truer words have never been spoken, I don’t have muscles like yours, and I gave up and grabbed a utility knife
I want to say thank you for making this video!! I specifically got on the Internet to figure out what I'm supposed to do with that spring thing. The rest of it was pretty logical and easy to figure out. The only difference is with mine is that the adjustable end slides up and down the pipe and the fixed end screws onto the threaded end of the pipe.
Thank god I ran across this video. I have been fighting with 3 pipes and clamps for an hour trying to figure them out and so mad I could jump up and down! This saved me and made me feel like an idiot at the same time! Throw that ring thing in the junk drawer for later and get the CLAMP ON! Let’s GOO
Right on man. Hahaha. I need one of those. I have to look down in order to read anything because the center of my eye is screwed. Stay safe man. Old dogs and all that.
That collar is there to prevent the moving part of the clamp from moving off the clamp. Just cut a thread at the end of the clamp and screw that collar on.....
Exactly - big box home stores also sell shorter (than 10') sections that are threaded on both ends; the spring is in fact a collar that is intended to thread on the unused threaded end, both to protect the end of the pipe (and your hands) a bit, and to halt the slider if you go "to far" back.
The collar is for the other threaded end if you buy a pre-sized pipe. The real issue is getting the clamp to work with 1/2” GALVANIZED pipe. The end doesn’t slide on and off as it does on black pipe. This is a problem. I was considering sanding the galvanized to accommodate. Thanks for the video and wish you much success with the homeschooling! God bless.
I just bought a slightly longer pipe that had threads on both ends, then that little spring clip screws right on the threads and stays there, or thread a pipe.
The manufacturer suggests that both sides of the pipe to be threaded. The spring collar is to screw onto the threads to keep the adjustable side from coming off the pipe.
That spring piece is not useless, it does serve a purpose. If you bought pipe that is threaded on both ends from Lowe’s or some other place that spring actually screws onto the threaded that the sliding piece of the fixture is on. However, if your pipe isn’t threaded on both ends, then it doesn’t matter. It screws onto the opposite end of the pipe than your tightening mechanism to prevent the sliding piece from sliding off the other end of the pipe as you’re “widening the clamp”. I just bought four packs, and one of mine did not come with the spring whereas the other 3 did. I had to call Pony to ask what it was for. You can see how the spring is used here: ruclips.net/video/rpPnAwu7WrE/видео.html. Start at the :30 mark.
That’s great info for everyone, thank you for providing it for us!! The weird thing is I could even say that 50% of the ones I buy don’t include that spring! Thanks, -Adam
@@JoshMG Yeah, unfortunately the quality control is subpar, at least the product is fairly priced for the quality! But to be fair I should probably say 60% of the ones I’ve purchased have had the spring while 40% have not. That’s probably more accurate than 50/50. Not sure where you are but you tried the harbor freight ones yet?
That little collar thing is pretty much a helicoil really. It’s used to be put into the clamp if you have a threaded end on a pipe. Pretty surprised Pony was generous enough to put that in there tbh lol
That little collar as you called it will screw onto threads if your pipe has them on both ends and protect the threads as well as a stop for that end of the clamp ( for when it’s riding around in the back of the truck being jarred around and working it’s way down and not coming off)
Hey Kevin, I always suggest keeping them as long as possible because you never know when you’re going to want that extra length, and we always do LOL plus if you’re doing 5 foot lengths you can clamp something long like a table etc.

Why though, the movable clamp needs to be pressed to release, so it's not falling off without help?
