  • Last month, Scotland faced the most important decision of the country's history: Should Scotland be an independent country?
    In this video, I briefly explain the situation, as well as touching on some of the key issues that were discussed by the Yes and No supporters.

    I just wanted to say making this video was a very strange experience for me. As a Scot, it was weird talking about my own country. Usually when I do research for a video, it's about something that I only know through my computer screen.
    A country on the other side of the planet, or a political situation on a continent I've never been to, or a war that ended over 60 years ago.
    But this was different. I actually use the currency I was talking about in my daily life, I pay tax in this country, I watched those live TV debates, I've used the NHS... hell, I even voted in the referendum! This is something that directly affects me and it was a great experience making this video.
    Whether or not you were happy with the result, the last few months have been a very exciting time to be Scottish. The whole world was watching our tiny nation last month.
    Just thought I'd share that.

    Also, you forgot to talk about the problem with the Shetland & Orkney isles. Both are very opposed to Scottish independence and have stated that if Scotland gained independence, they would declare independence from Scotland and rejoin the UK. This could be very costly for Scotland as the Shetland & Orkneys hold large amounts of the North Sea oil.

      Nightworld115 There were many, many things I didn't talk about. This is just far too complex of an issue for me to talk about everything. I tried my best to include as much relevant information as I could while keeping the video relatively short.

      Stephan Taylor I think it's also technically how Northern Ireland joined the UK. In 1922 all of Ireland briefly became the Irish Free State, but Northern Ireland was given the option to "opt-out" and rejoin the UK. As expected Northern Ireland opted out and became part of the UK again.

    Recent polls showed that many people in Hong Kong would rather go back under British Rule than under Chinese rule (95%).
    This is because they are given the freedoms that we permit here in the UK.
    The whole reason Scotland became part of the UK was due to bad leadership, and bad leadership won't get them out. The reason the UK (at least England) has survived for so long is due to good leadership, and as long as the UK has a fair, democratic system and a good quality of life, Scotland won't leave.
    I'm thankful that the more mature voters decided that all the 'Braveheart' nonsense was not worth it, and that staying together was better, and as you can see the results show that the majority of yes votes came from younger people, who are caught up in the campaigns, and have less life experience.
    Scotland won't be allowed the pound, either, and they would be crazy to think that the EU will help them. I don't want Scotland to turn out like Ireland.

    I don't buy into the argument that "Scotland didn't elect the Tories so shouldn't be governed by them". Liverpool never elected the Tories and yet is governed by them. Now I know that Scotland is a country and Liverpool isn't but what you're effectively suggesting is that the ~5 million Scottish people should have just as much control over the parliament in Westminister as the ~54 million English people. I think that every single citizen of the UK should have the same power at elections as each other.

    • @GarryMc67

      Erm... That was kind of the point. Nobody said Scottish people should have more control over parliament in Westminster, just control over our own country. That last part at the end urked me as a No voter. I'm perfectly fine giving each generation a chance to vote, but that's talking once every 20-25 years.
    Your 'the dream will never die' tribute at the end, albeit a quotation is actually a reflection of the general attitude of many yes voters: that is, the democratic process was used to determine our independence, the majority voted against it and those who voted in favour of independence and lost have handed immense power to SNP and are now vowing to either force independence soon, or to decrease the original gap of 20 years to only a handful of years.
    In other words.. I had to vote on an issue I did not ask for. I voted, despite expecting the opposite result, I cast my vote and now the minority voters(that is yes voters) that lost are refusing to accept the results of that referendum. Soon enough, in the next few years, I may be forced to vote again and again and again until the few bully the many into getting their way.
    I'm proud to be Scottish and I love my country, but all the same that last part really got to me, because I can't stand it when people spout on about how great democracy is when they think their vote is going to win, yet ignore the wishes of the majority in a selfish pursuit to have the result they wanted from the beginning. Well, then, that's not democracy - it's just an upstart inheritance.
    So basically my vote didn't count. Bought Scotland time, but otherwise doesn't count. And I've been called every name under the sun for my choice. The most prominent insult is that I'm a disgrace to my country, or even not Scottish at all.
    Sorry, but I don't have to take any shit from a bunch of selfish nationalistic thugs.

    • @ShinobuSakurazaka
      @ShinobuSakurazaka 9 лет назад +2

      You do know that the main issue now ISN'T independence but devolution of power from Westminster to Holyrood. The SNP said that we will get the powers that Scotland deserves, many cities and counties in the UK are asking for the same thing so the SNP are a lot more in line with public opinion than any other party.
      In the world we live in today you got to look out for your own and tend to your own business and that is what the SNP are trying to do. The EU referendum is a point of contention because if England votes OUT but Scotland, Wales and NI vote IN then the UK leaving the EU because the majority of voters live in England basically voids the wishes of Scotland, Wales and NI and shows that we really don't have a democracy.

    • @xesolor
      @xesolor 9 лет назад +1

      ***** Okay here's the contradiction -
      You claim "look out for your own", a very, let's be honest, selfish, egocentric, and neoliberal idea, which is exactly what Cameron claims - "Britain must look out for itself without being ruled/hindered by Brussels"
      So which part of quitting EU is different from quitting the UK?
      And here Sturgeon wants to retain EU membership, without retaining membership of the UK?
      Inconsistency and self-contradiction in the logical process isn't it?

      Stephen Clark Thank you for putting up with the Yes voters my friend! I too am Scottish, but i live in England and was therefore not given a chance to vote. I would of course voted No. I dont see the reasoning behind the Yes campaign at all, people who are United will always do better than those that are independent. Which is why im a Europhile too.
      Ive spoken to many Scottish Yes voters, most of whom did not know i was Scottish, and the sheer abuse and sometimes even racist comments they flung at me was shocking. Who are the real traitors to their country, to their democratic principles? The person who votes based on their ideals and respects the outcome (I tolerate a Conservative government for example, for even though i loathe them, most people in Britain did want them so you know....eh), or the people who, in their defeat, run riot in the streets threatening their compatriots with revenge over percieved betrayals? The rage of the Yes Voters makes me almost ashamed to call myself a British Scotsman.
      And for Sturgeon now to insist that another independence vote is just around the corner...its shameful. Absolutely no respect for the principles of democracy or the fine people of Scotland who went through months of uncertainty.
      Anyway, thank you Stephen Clark for staying fast to your beliefs, do not let the Yes voters get you down, you voted for Union, as any world-minded individual would, and i believe our country is better off because of individuals like you. Sod the nationalists.

    I'm sick of people in the UK acting like they are different from one another. We should get rid of the concepts of England, Wales, and Scotland altogether. Nationalism does nothing but divide people when we all live on the same island and barely have any differences. Nationalism was fun in medieval times but now we should work towards abolishing arbitrary divisions between ourselves.
    It's embarrassing that a tiny island country can barely hold itself together. Meanwhile massive countries like China, the US, and Canada are doing great and not at risk of falling apart.

      Your argument is pretty stupid though. So Welsh people should just forget about their roots, their history, ditch their already dying language, and bend over backwards because "nationalism is bad". By your logic, international borders should be removed entirely.
      Why do people like you beat the drum that if someone wants sovereignty, then they're a xenophobic nationalist who thinks everyone else is inferior? That just isn't the case.

    As Edinburgher I can tell you this, dear reader of my comment - if UK will exit EU you can be rest assured that there will be second independence referendum... and this time most likely successful, as Scots perceive EU as a counter balance for England.

    • @WIACZO

      I agree with you mate, but many of Scots don't think about this aspect in economical way... although thanks to the low oil prices SNP finally stopped to respond to every question with the same "ad oilum" argument.
      Moreover, we also forget about the fact, that if UK will leave EU, due to the lack of counter balance for Germany the whole EU project might destabilise. So basically Scotland will gain independence but there will be no more EU and the politics of the country will be "Finlandised" by England.
      All you wrote is true, and the existence of EU is yet another variable that might change due to the Brexit...

    650 seats in the House of Commons and only 59 are for Scotland. Ireland holds its own general elections to fill 160 seats in its own parliament in Dublin. And how the 60 senators in the upper house of parliament are elected is complicated.
    Point I'm making is Scotland has 59 seats in a 650 seat Parliament so how much emphasis does Scotland get there? Ireland has 160 seats in a 160 seat parliament so all emphasis is on Ireland.

      However the British Army is adept at tackling guerilla warfare and terrorism due to conflicts in Afghanistan.

    I find it utterly stunning to see so many comments on here by people who don't seem to understand that the referendum is over and that's it. It's over. Independence is off the agenda. It's over. Scotland is not the EU, they won't be able to keep asking the question until the people finally give the answer their leaders are looking for. The UK government has no good reason to allow this vote to be restaged within a generation. It's over.

      Hanson Dix It takes two parties to have such a referendum. The UK parliament has no reason to allow a re-run of this vote within a generation. It is incredibly divisive, expensive and distracting. We have had it and the yes campaign lost. That's it for a generation, an absolute minimum of ten years, probably more than twenty, possibly another three hundred. There is not going to be any bloody neverendum, the UK government won't wear it and neither will the Scottish people.

    General facts on Scottish Independence, surely all Scots should know - unless they are die hard UK imperialists who choose to be oblivious. Before I get criticised as Anti-English - I'm not, I have many English friends, I just believe strongly in an independent Scotland. I implore people, especially other Scots, to look into these facts themselves.
    Basics;
    1. 5 million Scots, 53+ million English - this is nearly a 1:11 ratio. Combined on a different idea in politics and goals between our two countries. Scotland will always be out voted. No matter what. This has been mainly evident in Brexit. But there has been more cases such as Trident (UK Nuclear weapon storage). Where the vote was universally different between our two nations. Scotland votes No? Guess what you don't have a say because the potential of 50+million English votes just out voted you. I know its a democracy, but if its a constant evident difference in opinion between Scotland and England, and we only lose out because of this absurd ratio. Its not really beneficial.
    2. There has been multiple enquiries into the success of Scotland as an independent country - by the likes of the UN and CIA. They all imply (as is similar amongst many small first world countries) we would be tremendously successful. Smaller countries can spend more on infrastructure and public services as naturally there is less of a defence budget, because there is less chance of going to war. Adding on to that factor, we would be less of a target for terrorists - joining wars that we do not need to get involved in (forced to get involved in) ... That has been an evident change in opinion between Scotland and England in the past also.
    3. Scotland is forward thinking progressive country compared to our English counterparts - Green economy and technology is at its strongest in Scotland. Its also one of the leaders of green technology in the EU. In 2017 Scotland ran off green energy for a whole week. With the world having to go green , being at the forefront is rather remarkable. If Scotland we independent, regardless to what the media tries to tell you, do the research yourself. You'll find that oil reserves will last for a few decades still. In transitioning to green energy, that is a lengthy span of time. Plus more of the oil revenue would actually be benefiting Scottish people - where it is mainly found in the North Sea. Or you could take part in the what the UK Parliament see as the answer - fracking. One of the most environmentally damaging ways of drilling for oil. Also it can effect the health of the population if oil seeps into the water table. Not to mention the incredible eye sore.
    There is heaps and heaps of other points, but these stand out most to me. Especially the first point.
    This is a trivial point, I understand, but this is fact of what i'm about to write - History has proven to show its a one sided relationship with England - if you watch a documentary on TV about ww2, ww1, the Victorian days. They'll reference the United Kingdom as 'England'. Not just on the program, but back in those actual days themselves also - I'm sure all the Irish, Scots and Welsh soldiers were just as important in the wars? It seems so true, to me and others I have spoken too, its all part of a propaganda to identify England and glorify it.
    The past;
    The English bias in media was a major play in the 2014 referendum - fear-mongering Scotland daily on the lead up to the vote.
    Scots were promised by David Cameron, at the time Prime minister of the UK, Remaining in the UK would secure the chances of having no EU referendum at all. Then (cant remember exact time frame) half a year or so later, declares EU referendum - straight up going against the UK Parliaments word.
    'Devo max' wasn't upheld in its entirety - this was promises to Scottish Parliament that more powers would be guaranteed. Only but half or less have been actually devolved.
    Scotland is openly mocked by the powers at west minister every time a proposal is suggested, that would actually benefit the Scottish people.

    • @rexultimatum2588
      @rexultimatum2588 9 лет назад +1

      endrightwinglunacy Not really... A difference between America and England, is that England is a singular entitity, and culture in its origins, whereas the United States is a mixture of practially all cultures. England did not form as America did. (A melting pot). England and the English have existed longer than the French, Danish and Norwegians have as a nationality and a ethnicity. Thus your premise is false as to your assumption that newly Britons/English claimed Danish, French, and Norwegian ancestry. Simply incorrect for the simple fact that I mentioned that the English have existed longer than all those groups you mentioned, and when the English ethnic group formed. They were the first Unified-modern nation state with its own institutions and elected government. In a sense, England was the first modern-country.

    I believe that we will see a repeat of the situations that transpired in 1979 and then in 1998. This vote will inform a generation of voters on issues which before had not interested or engaged them. Another vote will see that generation vote differently than they had in the previous referendum.
    I disagree that Devo Max has been pledged absolutely, so far we haven't seen any motions to put through legislation before the end of the session of government in 2015. Whether any of the parties which have made this "pledge" (made in the form of vague promises which are admittedly highly publicised) have the power to carry them out will depend upon the makeup of the next government. Another hung parliament is likely, with the Conservatives forming a coalition with one or two of the bit players such as UKIP or the BNP. A less likely but possible scenario is Labour pulling a coalition together with the Lib Dems. Even with either of these coalitions it is unlikely that the proposal will get through the House of Lords.
    With that in mind, I believe there will be another vote within our lifetimes, maybe very soon. That vote will go very differently.

    The problem with nationalist parties is that they tend to cut their noses off to spite their faces. By that I mean that they will often underutilise the powers they have in order to get their end result, which is independence. So many of the factors that the yes campaign were churning out were things that the SNP could have influenced anyway. But of course, they don't want Scotland to be a better place, what they want is for Scottish people to think they are getting a raw deal, in order to keep themselves relevant and persuade more people to vote for independence.
    What saddens me is that so many Scots were happy to lap this bullshit up. It was horrible to witness so many people who claim to be left wing only caring about their own little patch of land. No thought at all that Scotland's relative prosperity might well be entirely thanks to the fact that they have a devolved parliament within the UK, and no consideration whatsoever for their natural allies who happen to be on the other side of the border.
    The vote has happened. It was a NO. Get the fuck over it, change the record. Stop grumbling about what's best for Scotland, and start asking what's best for the UK!

      Hanson Dix I don't think I've met a more ignorant bunch of people than the yes supporters, who are totally oblivious to how good Scotland actually has it. They don't seem to realise that there is more to England than just London, which is also full of people who are detached from politics. The short sightedness, as if every problem stops at the border, is sickening.

Ireland would be a third world country withouth the british government, who,has given Ireland 20 billion pounds since 2010, a separate 6 billion 4 years ago. Scotland is basically being subsidised now, you don't hear the irish nationalists bragging about that do you.

    Scotland was independent from 843 - 1707, from the Kingdom of Scotland to the Union of 1707, that's 864 years. Also their currency was called a "Scot pound". So if Scotland would use a new currency then they should call it the Scot pound. But then that will never happen for as long as we are united. Another issue would be the UN membership, the UK could lose its permanent seat. Also what would our nation be called? United Kingdom of England Wales and Northern Ireland? United Kingdom of South Britain and Northern Ireland? Answers in a postcard please. Ah well at least we remain united.

      simba It was gradually replaced by the Northern Middle English dialects as it was adopted by the King and his court, then by the gentry (for fashion presumably) and the merchants adopted it to emulate the gentry and so forth. By the time of the Northern Conquest most Lowlanders spoke a language somewhat in between Old English and Gaelic given that the major cities had adopted it to trade with the English and by the 1400s the language was virtually dead in the South anyway and ceased to be the official language.

    • @Wanderer628
      @Wanderer628 8 лет назад

      +akosigundam Because the other countries whine that the English parliament would have to too much influence, so they try to split England up so they would be easier to deal with. Obviously they are having none of that, so a English votes for English laws system has been set up where English MPs have a much larger say over laws that only affect England. of course the SNP didn't like the thought the English having their own democratic say, no matter how much it's been watered down. But then again, the SNP have always enjoyed being bullyboys.

All of the billions handed out to them, free university fees (which the English taxpayers pay whilst English students have to pay £9000/year etc. would end. The majority saw just how good they have it.

      xEl Gringo Loco Did you watch the video? That oil is drying up and the population is aging; old people don't really pay taxes, they get handouts. In conclusion, that 9.9% figure is current, extremely short sighted as WonderWhy explained. If you watched the video. All of it I mean.

    • @xelgringoloco2
      @xelgringoloco2 10 лет назад +3

      Chris Dynamo You realise the oil is the UK's main export, right? Thats an issue either country would have had to face. Also, the population of every developed country in the world is aging, yes even England's. So again, a moot point. Back to the oil, that shit is worth in the minimum projections by various sources, £3,000,000,000. Thats £1000 per Scot per year for the next 727 years. You can't seriously tell me thats not enough money?

    • @teehee1604
      @teehee1604 10 лет назад +3

      The issue of tuition fees alone would fuck them up completely! As it stands, the only EU students who pay tuition fees in Scotland are those from the rest of the UK. Should Scotland go independent and rejoin the EU, then it would be illegal under EU law for English and Welsh students to be charged fees in Scotland. With no language barrier to dissuade them, and central Scotland being accessible enough for most, there would then be nothing to stop a vast flood of rUK students going to Scotland and taking up all their places. Since it is also illegal to discriminate on the basis of nationality, the only way Scotland could ensure university places for its own students would be to introduce fees itself! For that reason alone, I am astounded that any students would have the audacity to vote yes!

    • @ChrisDyn1
      @ChrisDyn1 10 лет назад

      xEl Gringo Loco 3 billion is a lot of money (if there is that much), but it's not in the grand scheme of things; Scotland's GDP is over $200b. Within the next 100 years we're going to perfect renewable technology, like solar, make nuclear reactions more efficient, have fusion etc. so oil won't be relevant fairly soon.

    I think its worth thinking about where Scotland would be right now if independence had gone ahead following the last vote. All the budgets I saw, even the most madly optimistic relied on taxes from oil revenue. Not only failing to take into account the declining revenues but also missing that the oil market was about to go into free fall, as we now know. The country would now have a worthless currency and would not be eligible membership to the EU under economic rules were membership even approved by all members. Which as you rightly point out, will not happen. The last thing the EU wants is another basket case economy. As you rightly point out in the context of the debate. Nicola Sturgeon in particular has so little credibility left in the EU that there is not even a starting place. They are so worried about her ability to make outrageous statements and throw a political hand grenade that the EU have not made the obvious move of trying to manipulate the situation with Scotland more overtly because she is not seen as a sensible partner. Personally, I like Scotland and have many friends there. I want the best for Scotland and I think we are all generally better off together.
