I have read on several sites that when males do this its because they were traumatized by separation from their mother as an infant or their mother weaned them to young. Research shows that an infant long tail should be allowed to breastfeed continuously the first 7-10 days. They should be allowed to breastfeed at least every 2 hours for the first month. Research indicates the more an infant is allowed to breastfeed the healthier they are. I wish Daisy or Mona would take him they both have milk.

Tonya MK75 I believe you are right. I noticed him curling up in this position a lot when they first started filming him. I thought he was in shock, shutting down and was curled into a ball and wanted to sleep, but the camera angle wasn't good and he was sitting in leaves. After watching this video I think he was doing this then but we couldn't tell, at least in the videos I saw. I found the position odd because it's not something we normally see but I chalked it up to his having been with people and I thought maybe he would curl up in his cage like that to shut them out. Now I think he was doing this because it's the exact same positioning of his head and body as the early videos. The only difference here is that he keeps lifting his leg which exposes his actions. He is under a lot of stress poor little guy!

How do you know he was taken at birth, his mom might have been killed. Every one always assumes the worst. No-one knows anything for sure, I've seen them doing this in the wild when they have mom and all the other members of the troop with them.

Even those who love the babies post sooo many complaints about the amount of time they spend at the breast that I've begun to wonder if they're simply not aware.. I'm by no means a primate specialist, but it seems like a common knowledge issue that the behavior is instinctive. In addition to the comfort/pacifying effect, particularly in the younger/weaker newborns, baby's instinct to latch on provides another "contact point" to mom when she's actively on the move. Until the baby has built strength in the neck, being latched on (whether drinking or not) the additional point of contact and resulting closer proximity to mom serves to protect the neck and helps avoid baby's head flopping and getting knocked against the ground, trees, etc.

It was discussed above that he shouldn’t be Given cow’s milk. It causes these monkeys horrible cramping, diarrhea and leads to dehydration and in some cases even death. He is old enough to forgo milk if he will eat fruit, vegetables, flowers, seeds, grasses, etc and has access to clean water. If he is given anything in a bottle it needs to be human infant formula. This type of suckling is seen in traumatized infant primates. It’s an attempt at self comforting but almost always leads to self harm and attempts to mutilate themselves. He will start chewing and clawing at himself and plucking his hair out wherever he can reach. It’s too late to return him to his mother and he has been psychologically damaged to the point that he most likely would need extensive rehabilitation to survive in a troop. This is why these animals should never be taking from their mothers and troops to be reared as a pet. No matter how cute you think they are as babies they quickly become larger, more aggressive and much more destructive. Then the humans drop them off where the often die miserable deaths.
On April 3rd Axil was taken to the WLA to live with Lori, Amari, Amy and Heidi. Poor little fella just can't live anywhere else cause he doesn't know how to be a monkey. A sad thing that someone took this baby away from his mother and put him in a cage probably since his birth. At least he will get to have a pretty normal life cause WLA came to rescue him.

Unless the milk you gave him was baby formula or specially designed to fed infant primates, he is likely to get diarrhea and become increasingly dehydrated. Most primates, especially infants can’t tolerate cows milk. I realize human infant formula is very expensive in Cambodia but if you can’t afford it it would probably be better to provide clean water and fruit, vegetables, seeds and grasses until little Axel can forage on his own. *Just saw another video title flash by that indicates that Axel has indeed developed diarrhea, a very serious problem in an infant this young.

If he is given anything in a bottle it needs to be human infant formula.
This type of suckling is seen in traumatized infant primates. It’s an attempt at self comforting but almost always leads to self harm and attempts to mutilate themselves. He will start chewing and clawing at himself and plucking his hair out wherever he can reach. It’s too late to return him to his mother and he has been psychologically damaged to the point that he most likely would need extensive rehabilitation to survive in a troop.
This is why these animals should never be taking from their mothers and troops to be reared as a pet. No matter how cute you think they are as babies they quickly become larger, more aggressive and much more destructive. Then the humans drop them off where the often die miserable deaths.
On April 3rd Axil was taken to the WLA to live with Lori, Amari, Amy and Heidi. Poor little fella just can't live anywhere else cause he doesn't know how to be a monkey. A sad thing that someone took this baby away from his mother and put him in a cage probably since his birth. At least he will get to have a pretty normal life cause WLA came to rescue him.

Lori W its a legitimate question. Abuse from a human wouldnt cause a baby monkey to suck its own penis. He’s clearly doing this because it’s the closest alternative he has to nursing which means he had a mother and that he likely separated from her recently. Monkeys in captivity don’t nurse like this. This wasn’t from abuse by a human. This is likely from trauma by whatever separated him from his mother.

Unless the milk you gave him was baby formula or specially designed to fed infant primates, he is likely to get diarrhea and become increasingly dehydrated. Most primates, especially infants can’t tolerate cows milk. I realize human infant formula is very expensive in Cambodia but if you can’t afford it it would probably be better to provide clean water and fruit, vegetables, seeds and grasses until little Axel can forage on his own.
*Just saw another video title flash by that indicates that Axel has indeed developed diarrhea, a very serious problem in an infant this young.
