  • Building an Ableton Live set with multiple songs to use on stage is the best way to run tracks on stage. In our previous video series we walked through implementing the 3-Part Framework for using tracks to create a template, format your songs, and build a live set.
Once you've mastered the process of dragging multiple formatted songs into an Ableton Live set, you'll want to implement the advanced tips and tricks shown in this video for more freedom and flexibility on stage.
In this video, Ableton Live Certified Trainer, Will Doggett shares 3 advanced tips and tricks using a Virtual MIDI bus that you can implement into your Live Sets.

Thanks for your videos! Been using backing tracks and automation from Ableton a couple of years now, with bands and in theatre shows. And i've used track delay much, a mixing trick, when doubling up backing vocals for instance. Keep up the good work!

For the people like myself with short attention spans ;)
4:08 - setting up IAC driver on mac
9:18 - setting up stop clips
17:54 - Pause (stop) and go to next track
    31:08 - Jumping between sections/looping sections
Amazing info, Will, thank you so much! Love the fact you go super deep into everything and explain how the stuff works under the hood!

Great video, I'm new to ableton live, when I map and position my clips to work with the "next locator" to go to the next song, it doesn't go to the next song, it goes to a later locator from where the playhead started. Is it possible to make this button work so that it goes to the next locator from where it left off by the hitchhiking? when I map the locators individually it works fine

Great Information Thank you!! How do you deal with changing bpm On stage live? is there an easier way than clicking the tempo audio and double clicking on the new bpm? its hard to do that when your in the middle of the song.

In rehearsal I’d change the tempo on the tempo track. If tempo is changing Live I’d use tap tempo

May be a dumb question. But when setting up a pause and go to next track…. Is there a way to make the “arrangement insert marker” travel with the play head?
When we start the set we hit “1” to move the insert marker to the beginning, but it stays there. So then later in the set when I have a “stop and move to next locator”, the play head jumps all the way back to the second locator in the set instead of the next locator based on where the play head is. What is the best remedy for this?
EDIT: I found it in your video! Needs to be an “absolute” command.
But, if I’m looping a section using a “previous locator” midi note in the middle of the set, and then I use a controller to go to the next locator (to stop looping the section and actually start the song) will that still work since the controller pad isn’t mapped to an absolute locator? Or would it be better to do what you did at the end here and have a note toggle the track activator on/off? But if I don’t want to have to reactivate the clip manually, then I can add another note after that to reactivate that clip automatically for the next time in the set that I want to loop a section?

Hi Will. On my set of three songs.... on my third song When i'm trying to repeat the previous locator, i created a bunch of locators, i have the IAC driver set up, i create a midi clip, assign a midi note, i command M and midi assign the previous locator button, When i go to play once the timeline hits the midi clip instead of repeating the previous locator it goes to the very first locator on the first song... what i'm i doing wrong? I did every step just like you show in your video "How to repeat ....."

Hi Ricky-without seeing your set, it's hard to know what's going on.

Hi Will, I want to activate/desactivate the "speaker on"/activation button of one midi track automatically as a song is playing (so I don't have to think about reactivate the loop mode you've showed us around 35 min of your video). For this purpose, I'm using a midi clip with a specific note on another midi track linked to the IAC driver in/out. I've mapped the note in the clip with the "speaker on" of the other track. But when I quit midi map mode, I can't activate the speaker on button of the target track no matter what (playing the midi clip or directly pressing on it) it stays off. Whereas, if I use a key mapping to activate/desactivate the speaker on button, it works fine (as you did in the video) and the key map trick doesn't work anymore if I try the midi clip solution at the same time.
If I midi map the second clip to solo button of the target track (instead of activation button) it works fine. So is there a special behaviour of the activation button of one track which prevent midi mapping it ?

I decided to look at Abelton after seeing your videos. I was initially drawn to q lab since many theatre tributes use it. However it seems incredibly expensive and it looks like Abelton can do everything that q lab can do, but at a lower cost. Am I correct?

All done as explained. But after it stops and I hit Start (or spacebar) the playhead always jumps to the former starting point indicated by the blue marker.

Once again thank you for making this tutorial series available for free on RUclips! No one else explains it as in depth and concise as you do, you're doing great work for the electronic musician's education!

Well good decision, but very unusable in real live because of online soft instruments in a set. If you use soft EZdrummer for example, and add ANY delay to any track, your tightening will be lost. Behavior of soft synth will be unpredictable amount of DELAY. I mean during performance LIVE. so we use v-drums in conjunction with EZdrummer and lost tight timing for drummer.
      Maybe some solutions for that??

    • @fromstudiotostage
      @fromstudiotostage  2 года назад

I don't have EZ drummer so unfortunately I can't offer a fix there. I've had no issues with other plug-ins using this method for years.
