We've heard this question a lot: why do woodpeckers sometimes peck on metal? Are they confused and looking for food? The truth is, they're likely drumming! Woodpeckers drum on wood, metal, and other surfaces for the same reasons other birds sing-to defend their territory and attract mates.
Took us years to figure out the noise being made on the roof was a Northern Flicker drumming on the TV antenna.. After knowing this a time came up I was in a boat on the lake and heard that familiar sound. I said that is coming from that bird sitting on the 55 gal metal barrel way on shore. No way everyone said, we went over, it was making quite the loud sound which carried very far on the water.
The loudest metal-drumming woodpecker I ever heard was in the Canadian Rockies. There is a road (Highwood Pass) that is closed in the winter and there is a metal guardrail that runs for several kilometres to protect the road from a steep drop. I was cross-country skiing up the road in in early spring and a woodpecker (probably a Northern Flicker) was drumming on the guardrail. The sound resonated through the guardrail and echoed throughout the valley. The woodpecker must have been happy with that find!

in my backyard forest in Canada you see the giant Pileated ones all the time! can hear them for many kms away.
Spoiler alert: they want to impress and woo potential mates. Also they train that way.
