    I am a bit nervous. I painted a pour painting, and want to put a waterslide. But the painting is rather dark. Since I have a little airgun I thought I could just put some white or light pink and just spray a thin transparent layer where my waterslide will go. So thank you for teaching me how to mix the paint! I think I will make a paper cutout just a bit bigger than my waterslide and put that down so I won't overspray. Otherwise, it's just paint and I can do it over. :) thank you!!

      if you want to go super easy on how quickly you apply it I'd suggest some real airgun paint like Vallejo model air (not sponsored lol) and thin it a bit. Over spray card for sure, these cheapy sprayers spray in a circle and it's easy to go outside where you meant to unless you're trying to blend edges

    Alcohol reacts with some cheap craft paints and it will gum up your airbrush something terrible.
    Ask me how I know...
    It was "Folk Art color shift" paint that I was using and it does not work with alcohol.
    I now use distilled water with a couple of drops of vegetable glycerin or the paint manufacturer's recommended thinner.
    Before using any mixture, I would test it before trying to spray it through your airbrush.

    When airbrushing with these acrylic paints and alcohol does it require ventilation? I am in a nursing home and would love to try this method of painting. I would need to make a paint booth out of a box to eliminate overspray and I was worried about the fumes from the alcohol.

    • @QuiniansBudgetCrafts
      @QuiniansBudgetCrafts  3 года назад +3

      I think they stink more than anything, but in a nursing home that might be bad. I had mentioned to someone else on this thread that airbrush thinner does work better and now a days is actually cheaper than alcohol lol

    • @WHJeffB
      @WHJeffB 2 года назад

      Alcohol based thinners should most definitely be used with a paint booth or good ventilation. I'd think this would be very important in a shared space environment like a nursing home, if not against the rules. One thing I've seen apartment dwellers do (modeling friends that lived in apartments), is to disconnect the clothes drier hose from the vent to the outside. Then rig the vent hose from the paint booth to it for spraying with the paint booth. If you have a window that opens to the outside in your room, you could fashion an insert from heavy cardboard to connect the booth vent hose to and vent it outside that way. Good luck... Hope you find a solution that works!

I transfered two bottles in an other ones using a filter but it is very long and hard to do. The thing is that I don't remember which one was from the cheap store. And alcool is wosrt when it is gummy because the gum dries in the airbrush

    • @QuiniansBudgetCrafts

      ah sounds like old paint. mine do that if I leave them for a while. It should be water based acrylic paint, so a little purified water and a marble, then shake the hell out of it should thin it pretty will, but it will still have a few boogers to strain out

  • @ryanokeefe12

    The alcohol destroys those paints adhesive properties and will also turn into jelly and spray like crap... The reason you're getting the sputtering and also talk about 'gummy bubbles' is the paint turning into a jelly like substance and the only thing that will make it flow again is the alcohol.. You can keep adding alcohol and it will keep thinning it out, but you're just reducing the adhesion even more.
    It's best to use a mix over water and windshield washer fluid with a couple drops of glycerine. The washer fluid will help to reduce the surface tension of the water and also help dry it quicker. The glycerine will make the paint flow better and level better.

    • @QuiniansBudgetCrafts
      @QuiniansBudgetCrafts  3 года назад

      I'll give that a go. I've not had any issues with the paint turning to jelly or not sticking using alcohol, just boogers in the paint itself cause it's $0.50 cheap craft paint

    • @ryanokeefe12
      @ryanokeefe12 3 года назад +1

      @@QuiniansBudgetCrafts the 'boogers' aren't because it's cheap paint. It's because of the alcohol. I went through a month trying to get my airbrush to work when I first started after watching a video on using alcohol. Turns out, the alcohol was the problem.
      When I say 'jello' i mean the paint looks as if it's returned to it's state before it was ever thinned (sometimes even thicker).. This isn't the alcohol evaporating, it's the binders in the paint prematurely beginning to link because of the absence of water. You can thin it even more with alcohol and it will flow again but you're then spraying the acrylic that has already completed it's key 'binding' phase.
      As soon as I stopped trying to use alcohol and just used water, i was blown away with how easy life was. Then I added the washer fluid and glycerine and it was almost like painting enamels... Flows amazing, levels great, dries quickly enough to not be a pain and not so fast as to give you dry spraying and clogged tips.

    • @QuiniansBudgetCrafts
      @QuiniansBudgetCrafts  3 года назад

      @@ryanokeefe12 I mean boogers straight from the bottle, not from the brush. I use furniture polish in my washes as a flow aid, that seems to work pretty well but I didn't want to put that in the air brush because they can have wax in them and I figured that'd build up after a while

    • @ryanokeefe12
      @ryanokeefe12 3 года назад

      @@QuiniansBudgetCrafts You will get that with any acrylic paint that isn't pre-thinned for airbrushing.. it's just the paint that has dried near the top of the bottle after it's been exposed to air.
      Furniture polish isn't a flow aid. A flow aid is a base of whatever the pigment carrier is mixed with glycerine (for acrylic paints). For water-based acrylic, the carrier is water.
      Furniture polish is oil-based 90% of the time and will be horrible for any acrylic other than enamel.
      When thinning paint, all you want to be doing is increasing the percentage of the carrier. For lacquer, it's lacquer thinner. For urethane based paints, it's urethane reducer. For water-based paints, it's water.

This video helped a lot because, now, all I have to do is go get a big bottle of alcohol for under $3 and just mix it with the paints I already have!!!!! 🎉🥳🥳 The pluses are that:
    - don't have to spend $10-$20 on alcohol ink
    - can stretch out my paints to last longer -- do more airbrush projects, and
    - because of the addition of alcohol to my acrylic paints, the paint will dry much faster

      I'm not sure because I'm not familiar with that paint. The only fabric paint I've worked with has been very very thick and textured so if it's like that I don't think so. The space for the paint to come out around the needle is very small, the slightly bit of grit would clog it. Could be worth a shot though, worst case you just undo a couple nuts and clear it out

      it may have, alcohol evaporates really fast. Airbrush thinner in now cheaper than ISO so I'd probably swap to that if I were you. Also could be how thinned you got it. Needs to be like skim milk, and you must thin before you put it in the brush cause you'll never get all the boogers from around the needle otherwise

  • @seetheforest
    @seetheforest 3 года назад +10

    I used these same paints for a long time.
    You need to mix thinner, thin, stir, and strain for good measure.. I got by using them and had ok results but was always getting tip dry and the occasional clog.
    I have Createx colors and thinner but I was trying to be thrifty and use cheap paint. Cheap paint can be used and it can work pretty well...
    But the other day I started using the Createx paint. What a difference! The flow and response of the brush changed dramatically. Even in my cheap $30 brush I had way better control and spray.
    The paint would flow as soon as I started to pull the trigger back. The brush would make tiny spots and fine lines instantly and every time.
    I was so used to fighting with trying to get the paint to flow I was doing very little actual painting. Not to mention the on and off, sometimes it flows sometimes not, and not being able to spray the same way twice was wasting all my time.
    Those cheap paints have a place I suppose.. If you need to fill a sky with blue or a ship with grey and you have a big cup gun you can spray it well.
    But to thin it to get it to spray detail and cover without blowing spiders all over is a challenge.
    It just might be worth it to put a few dollars worth of paint in your gun instead of wasting time for minimal results.
    Also the shading was horrible and the finish was dusty and gritty to touch.
    I sprayed a pic on glossy poster board (with Createx paint) yesterday and the paint lays so flat and clean it has a perfect glossy finish you cant even feel or see. Its amazing how smooth and clean it looks.
    Like day and night as they say..

    • @QuiniansBudgetCrafts
      @QuiniansBudgetCrafts  3 года назад +3

      yeah it's not optimal to be sure. Actually it's quite literally the cheapest way possible short of blowing the paint through a straw lol It does do well enough to base coat and such though. This vids a little old, I've switched over to actual airbrush thinner mostly because it was cheaper but also better results. Windex never worked for me.
      I've since gotten some slightly better brushes with a compressor and mostly use Vallejo airbrush paints for the air brush and use the 50 cent stuff for base coating with a hair brush.
      That brush I do still use a lot cause it's just easier to deal with and operates at a pretty low pressure so it still has its uses

      not really it just effects how quickly the mix dries. As long as the paint has been thinned to the point it's nearly watery you should be fine. I don't have much luck with Isopropyl Alcohol for some acrylics. Obviously works with cheap craft acrylics though. But if you want a near universal "acrylic thinner"... Windshield washer fluid is fantastic! Super cheap, readily available. I use the stuff that's good to -20° or -30°, which guarantees that it has a good amount of alcohol (methyl I think). Thins just about every acrylic paint I've used really well. It's a great airbrush cleaner too. Only thing about it... The alcohol is fairly toxic to breath and you don't want to soak your skin with it for long periods of time (this is sort of the case with most alcohols, not just the stuff in windshield washer fluid). So either use it outside or with a paint/spray booth. I also use a respirator when spraying, and throw away rubber gloves (Harbor Freight).
