I made one for my chickens last night thanks to your video! I added similar chains and attached the bucket with a heavy duty steel bracket on the wall. 5 minutes the chickens were pecking on it and 10 minutes later they were all eating .Amazing!
Got my teenage son to make this with your easy to follow directions. Underestimated how smart my chooks were, but this feeder works a treat! Thank you for the idea.
I made this feeder but didn't like the way the 5-gallon bucket performed and switched to a piece of 2" plastic pipe about 36 inches long, now it deliveries all the food down to the last pellet. Thanks
Thank you for the great idea! My dad made one a few days ago after worrying for ages about the rodent problem. The hens figured it out within minutes and it works like a charm. 😊
Built this a few weeks ago with two toggles in one bucket; smeared peanut butter and then jelly on the toggles for a few days in a row and my 2.5-year-old hens figured it out after a little less than a week. Make sure to use eyebolts and put the loop end inside the bucket. At one point the hens unscrewed the nut/washer, so we may have to use LockTight on it if it happens again. Packrats are still sneaking around but I haven't seen them successfully hit the toggles, and I'm pleased they aren't rummaging around in the food bin, now.
We made one a few days ago but 3 days later and one rooster and 12 hens have yet to figure it out no matter how many times I show them. Peanut butter and jelly just might do the trick! Thanks for the idea!
What a marvelous idea. My wife and I thank you for saving us big on feed bills.

What a great video. I have searched the internet for instructions on how to keep the vectors out of the chicken feed. You did a great job putting this together. You are to the point and don't waste time. Nicely done.
The girls really like it once we showed them how to use it and raise it to the proper height. No more rodents in the coop and barn area. Thank you for sharing
I did it and the wild birds at first waited around for the chickens to peck it, then they learnt how to use it. If chickens can learn it, the birds can too.
On ours, I made sure to use what's called "fender washers", which are big washers with a small hole. The 1 - 1/2 inch washer catches a bit of the food that falls, and when the chickens go for that, it releases more food. Chickens are great copycats, so once the first bird gets it, they all want to do it. This is better than any commercial feeder out there, and sure cuts down on waste. Many thanks.
I took yours a step further and used plastic lids from yogurt containers with the washer underneath it. It's enough to catch a lot of what falls but not stable enough for something to climb on it. The chickens rarely leave any food on it and I've never seen food on the ground.
Great idea. I’m not having any issues with my current set up using a 5 gal “food grade” bucket with feeder holes the chickens put their heads in to feed but thinking of this will slow down some of their mess they make currently.
What a fantastic idea! Looking for rat proof feeders when I came across this video. I’m going to give this a shot and hopefully not have to spend big bucks for the pre-made varmint proof feeders. Thanks much 🖤🖤
This is INCREDIBLY brilliant and helpful! Out here in the Mojave we find we're often feeding squirrels and mice. The squirrels are the worst because they steal eggs. It's a daily chore setting up the traps, gathering and either killing (squirrels) or releasing (mice). THANK YOU!!
If you paint the piece of CPVC red or use a red sharpie marker, it will encourage the chickens to peck the CPVC. But I think I'd try a small piece of red PEX tubing.
I’m guessing I have the dumbest birds ever… I’ve tried red marker and placing a piece of bread around the toggle… 3 days later and they are still clueless… next trying some peanut butter and jelly…
Just happened to be outside today worrying about the wet chicken feed in the feeders. I'll head over to walmart and get a couple buckets and try this out tomorrow. Thanks for sharing this.
Wow, what a good idea! I have a bucket with nipples for water and this will compliment it well. I was also excited about the T-post to hang them on. And it looks nice and keeps things clean and sanitary, too. Brilliant! Thank you!
I added to them a linear actuator that raises/lowers them automatically off the ground another 24” from sunset to sunrise via wifi switch(Alexa). Now 100pct rodent free I can control feeding schdulw. Yes it will cost another $70 but holds a ton of food
Everyone said I had to "train or show" my chickens how to use "chicken nipples" on a water bucket. We had 1 chicken peck the silver tip, water came out, the rest started pecking the other silver nips. If 1 chicky bird does it, they all want to 😂😂😂😂😂. So ours already know pecking silver-hangy-things get them something. So they should take right to this. Great idea! Thanks for sharing!!
This is a fantastic design! The chickens didn't understand it at first but we showed them how to use it and they understood it immediately. I used a 2 gallon bucket because ours is inside the coop and used an old adjustable bolt leg from a washing machine with a cone shaped plastic end on the feeding side. I like having a bit of weight from the rubber foot so not too much falls out. I didn't have to buy anything I just reused some random parts.
I made one our of a square ice cream bucket. Works great! My only problem is my beagle has figured out how to work it and eats all the feed. Since I only have 2 chickens, I made one out of a half gallon milk jug cut off and hung it inside the little coop where the dog can't get it.
Damn rats! I made a plastic one, will tide me over until I find a metal bin with a lid. Might even make a rain cover for it. Probably need two. Now the wild birds might have bird flu I have to keep them out more effectively too. I hate rats. The times they, or something else, takes bait off my traps without settig them off....
does it work with mixed feed or does it have to be uniform grain only of one kind? Otherwise what would prevent chickens to spill lots of feed on the ground while picking only the stuff they like most?
I tried this and unfortunately my three hens just didn't figure it out so after 5 days of trying to entice them and having to mess with it I went to fashioning a metal dryer vent with an upside down vent hood for a feeding trough and gravity feed them. I can add feed easier and it works great.
You could prob get a large funnel to put inside. There would be some space wasted but all the feed would come out keeping it fresh. I think I'm going to do this. Now just need to find a funnel big enough.
Oh mate! Don’t you worry about weird stuff? 😂 When refilling the bucket just be sure and give it a stir to mix any remaining food in and there’ll be no problem at all!🤷♂️ As for the funnel idea; that sounds good but you can bet some food’ll get under somehow, just sounds more trouble than it’s worth. It’s a cheap and cheerful solution made from a bucket! Let’s appreciate it as such. 😉🌱
Have a very similar design I obtained from a you tube page. The hole I drilled in the bucket is a little larger and I have added a n old metal basin to the bucket so the food falls into it. They work very well and take a large quantity of feed.
It's a simple fix! Popped the ground Squirrels but those other birds. Man what a problem they're in my Apricot trees, mostly in my chicken yard.! I'm after this friend simplifies the morning, open their door, out they come to eat and drink peck and scratch. And I will be very happy to see those avian pest go away.
I really like this idea but I’m curious. Rats and squirrels are pretty smart. What is to keep them from jumping up and hitting the bolt to drop food for themselves?
The Sparrows figured it out by hanging onto the eye bolt to get to the hole where the feed comes out, then they figured out to move to bobble. I have removed it and will cover the eye bolt with some conduit just big enough for the bobble to move and down to the end of the bobble. I will try this and if it works I will post a picture. either way it was a great idea, thanks mate.
I like this idea but i have bantys and standard size hens, I am wondering how that will work, i bougth aautomatic feeder so not to get up in wintermorning but i think the rats found away to make the feder relaese food any time and now it dont last, it use to feed them for a week now it doesnt ugrr
You have to experiment with the hole size, start with a very small hole and enlarge it if you need to, to get the right amount of food to drop when the toggle is moved.
Maybe use a longer eye bolt that lets the grain fall into a shallow cup (PVC pipe end cap?) so they can eat out of the cup: and a chicken knocking the cup drops in more feed? A 3" tapper on the inside corner of the bucket might stop dead food in the corners of the bucket? ========== As well as a bucket, that might work hanging from a hole in a end cap on a vertical 4" (100mm) PVC pipe too?
If you use an end cap and hang it where it's hanging with the open end up, would it sometimes catch a little feed and encourage the smarter chickens to peck it out?
I'm just getting ready to do this, but I wouldn't think if you portion it appropriately - your chickens should go through it fairly quickly, and you check it each time you refill it. I"m gong to make one side feed and the other side water. I will write back if I get any mold over time.

I think I will add a shallow pan under it on the ground only because at some times of the year the ground gets pretty wet. They have houses and ways to get off of the ground but I really don't want their food dropping on it...so a plastic or metal shallow pan for it to fall into ought to do the job.

looks like the wind would blow the part that the chickens are to peck all around dropping feed on the ground. Not good if it rains and is windy with lots of dropped feed getting wet. The chickens wont be there because they hate to get wet.
I don't think wind is much issue, small area for wind to hit, low to ground not allot of wind, with feed all around it bolt probably does not swing so easy with wind, seems to need a tiny bit of force like a peck
Good idea. Can see your chickens are layers so that's OK, let em peck away. But if they were broilers your nice feeder idea will be counter productive, because the calories they'll burn trying to peck to get few pieces of food... it'll impact on the rate of their growth/weight in the long run. I'm just thinking.
Hello 👋 I'm in Australia. Loved your video 📹. I only have one chicken 🐔 left a Bantam. She isn't big so will this work? Your chickens are qutie tall when they reach up. I want to keep RATS 🐀 out of poor little things food. 😢 rats are smart and may learn to push the toggle and get an abundance of free food. I am currently baiting the rats so fingers 🤞 they will be no more. But that's another story.
just get a baddass rooster end of any rats or miceses,i built this every day i had to fix it or add screws my chicks took it apart and then swallowed the screws then i glued the screws nope they just sat there hour upon hour just picking until broke.just get a baddass rooster
Thanks for the great idea. Unfortunately we have some smart house sparrows who have learnt to swing on the down piece to make pellets drop down. At least it is rationing them compared to my previous feeder.

Hi there
Did this work out well?

Your feeder will attract rats. The whole point of this feeder is to not release more feed than the chicken eats at one time, so no food for rats.
Looks good! You never said what size hole & bolt you used with what type of feed.

This only works with pelletized feeds. More crumbly, granular or powdery feeds won't stop flowing out.
You have to adjust the hole size for the type you are feeding, which means you would need a couple different buckets with different hole sizes.

Do squirrels get to the feed?
Instead of the coupling you can use an end cap so you don't need all the washers. Just drill a hole and place a nut on each side.

... you make a bigger hole.
Excellent idea. Thank you for posting!!!
Thanks I am headed to the garage to try this right now. Happen to have everything i need in a junk bin
ok but if you fill full of the bucket the hook will become very heavy....it wont work.
HELP! How on Earth did you get your chickens to use these feeders? My chickens don't seem to have ANY idea that the food comes out of the bucket.
You can put a red dot (or several) on the PVC with a sharpie - they LOVE to peck at red dots! They figure it out from there.
But that's another story.
how did you teach your chickens to use this? thanks
Would it work better to paint the pvc green?
Eggcellent idea ❤
Thanks for that. Great idea to stop our local flock of house sparrows stealing the chooks food and spreading diseases!
Such a great idea!!! Thanks for sharing!
I could not find the parts list you said you posted. Please advise. thank you.
You really need a list for a bucket, an eyebolt, an inch of PVC pipe, 2 nuts and 2 washers? WOW. You better stay away from powertools!
Very kind comment.
just get a baddass rooster end of any rats or miceses,i built this every day i had to fix it or add screws my chicks took it apart and then swallowed the screws then i glued the screws nope they just sat there hour upon hour just picking until broke.just get a baddass rooster
ashy slashy ferment your feed, they will consume it quickly no waste no freeloaders and they need less food. Result
@@wendyknoxleet how do.you ferment it?
Thanks for the great idea. Unfortunately we have some smart house sparrows who have learnt to swing on the down piece to make pellets drop down. At least it is rationing them compared to my previous feeder.
