To me this seems completely asinine, counter productive of actually spending time together in person. The relation to Asia, specifically South Korea, was more to do with this being a social norm as it appears they struggle with being sociable, even with each other - nevermind strangers, which brings the initial point. I read an article on CNN about half an hour ago, that the South Korean government is actually paying their youth to re enter society, because they have become so recluse. I have never seen this on such a level in any other country, especially watching Spanian's videos, when you compare other Asian counterparts, like Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, they seem to be more socialable. From my experience travelling, though this is partly a culture thing that exists in all East Asian countries, in Korea it is taken to the extreme. During my time in Korea I largely reacted the same as Spanian, there is so much to do, you can consume your heart out and Seoul is a very futuristic city with awesome food and entertainment. Simultaneously though after a while I felt that there was a profound sense of loneliness and alienation in Korean society. I never fully could put my finger on why it felt that way, though what you're pointing out definitely plays a part.
