I'm in England. It's incredible how little knowledge bike shops have about power metres, and the merits of riding to power. Most think it's just a showy toy for pros!
I've had a stages power meter for a couple of months now. had a few issues with a high calibration figure. I contacted stages through customer support who were very quick to offer solutions non of which were successfully and so offered a replacement through point of sale. I now have a second gen 105 and can not fault it, stages customer service is also first class. now looking forward to getting some quality miles in now over the winter months
One thing i've noticed now that I have my first power meter is that the hills force me to keep the wattage up where as the flats always have a lower wattage. I can hold 215 watts on a 8% incline no problem for an hour, but on the flats I can only hold 150- 175 watts. The hills are the best way to get in shape just like durianrider says.
I bought my first power meter thanks to durianrider, best thing i could have done for my training . I learned real fast that a $500 aluminum bike with a power meter is way better than a $1500+ carbon bike with no power meter.
There's no reason for it to be that way I do same power in all conditions
+flea tick One word: Wind.
Hills = resistance
You can't weight train with nothing in your hands.
Just got mine very happy with going stages for my entry into cycling. bring on the adventures
my g2 lasted 5 weeks '392 miles' in UK weather. sent it back and had a new one in a week! good service and I hope the replacement last longer...
Stages gen 2, best training and pacing tool I've used. I had a idea of the power I'm putting down in sections of a regular ride, now I'm riding quicker as I'm pacing the efforts better and holding back rather going crazy on climbs, no more peddling squares and therefore recovering better for the next effort. I agree that there could be a issue with accuracy but the data is relative to me and so will be consistently inaccurate to the same level. It doesn't affect the principle of using power as a training and pacing tool. Gear ratio, cadence and power all good stuff
Cannondale Slate with the lefty fork, disc brakes, SRAM CX1 drivetrain and 42mm tire clearance looks like a interesting review DR. Little bit cyclocross and little bit MTB. Hoping you slap a Stages on it and give it an unbiased review. Cheers mate.
Im definately going to purchase, ive seen guys on my group ride and id always kick their ass but once they got a meter and started training to power they are kicking my ass! Time to move up...
love your passion for cyclinginging
I`ve just saved up for a secondhand one someone was selling, can't wait to give it a go.
Think stages has a number of limitations that prevent it being the number one PM. 1: Doesn't fit all frames. 2: Reliability issues - yes all devices have issues but Stages seems much higher than most (most of the guys I ride with have had issues)- perhaps due to our wet gritty winters in the UK. 3. left leg only issues such as not accurate enough for Aero-testing. Despite these issues they do offer enough functionality for most and hopefully the new version is more weather proof. of the 3 power meter types I have owned I would say power2max is my favorite.
I have had a stages power meter on my Madone for about a year and if I had it to do over again I would have gone with another manufacturer or spent my $900 somewhere else. One day it works, next day it doesn't. Nothing like spending your whole ride stressed out wondering WTH is wrong with it. It really pisses you off when your on a big ride and lose both your power & cadence... I think I might sell it and get the Powertap P1's.
Just watched this after buying a second hand Stages genll. Cheers, pal (y)
+CTFUCycling recent developments see more power meters that go between pedal and crank. What are your opinion on those and on the highly discussed Q-factor implications?
I agree with you for the most part but got remember stages is not always the best for everyone I have a bad left knee.. from an old injury years back.. you can tell that one leg my right leg it's a little more muscular than my left. with stages I would not have never seen how off my left vs right power balance is. when I got powertap p1 i was at about 40 / 60 balance with stages I would have never seen that I knew I was off but not that much or how far off the P1 help me get back to about 45 / 55 and continuing to try to train my left leg to get it stronger. but anyways good video
Stages and Garmin 1000 issue. Have you had the problem were the Power and Cadence will zero out for a few seconds speraticlly during a ride? The Garmin doesn't lose complete communication with the stages but it stops receiving data from the stages. I have contacted Stages regarding this and they say it's a Garmin firmware problem. I have don't 4 firmware upgrades since my fist issue and nothing has fixed it. Just wanted to ask you since you have 7 of these PM's.
Hey durianrider I think I saw your running 175mm cranks, I read recently changing to a shorter length crank improves cadence do you have a view/opinion on this ? Thanks in advance
power meter makes long rides especially easier with pacing
I think there will always be a high end market for companies like SRM but yes I agree it will most likely reduce. The issue with lower cost items is genuine inaccuracy. When you jump off your Stages bike onto your smart trainer with an up to (sometimes more) 15% variance and then the same again to Powertap etc it's an issue.
No doubt they are great for individuals recording personal comparisons day to day but across the board in larger comparisons none of the cheaper ones are remotely accurate. That's when they are calibrated properly also. Results are far worse when clowns can't even calibrate consistently/ appropriately.
It is however without doubt a great thing this tech is becoming affordable.
Hearing what Ulrich Schoberer of SRM has to say
about these is hilarious. Through independent testing it's becoming obvious exactly how (in) accurate these are. They are cheap for a reason Harley.
+Shaun Timberlake HAHA BUT Ulrich is losing sales every week!
In 2 years time I predict SRM will be running at a loss if it isnt already. I already see so much NOS SRM stock on fleabay or big online retailers.
Stages is selling the most power meters in 2015 hands down.
Team Sky gave SRM the flick due to weight, servicing and compatibility issues and gave Stages the green light.
+Shaun Timberlake as long as it's precise I don't care if it's not 100% accurate because for most of us what matters most is it being precise/consistent to be used as a pacing tool which for me has helped a lot
+Dean Johnson Yeah, actual Wattage accuracy only matters if you wanna compare results with other people.
Yea I think p2m are the best deal I have vector s which is one side and wish I got p2m. Stages for 400 is pretty spiffy tho
Have you tried Power2max or Rotor inpower? I was warned not to buy stages due to reliability issues associated with water ingress from a lot of cyclist friends who have had back experience with them, have you seen similar issues?
what do you think of the garmin vector power meter. because you i should get a power meter to lose wight quicker use one. but i haven't got that good of crank so if i get peddles it would be better
ever tried infocrank ? - an aussie product afterall, mate
Hi Durianrider, much appreciated review, as always.
I'm on the verge of buying a PM, either a Stages Ultegra crank or... the Favero BePro (www.bepro-favero.com/en/). Have you heard of that one? DC Rainmaker has a good review of it (www.dcrainmaker.com/2015/09/favero-depth-review.html).
Not much between the two in terms of price or accuracy, but pedals are probably a lot easier to interchange in between bikes! It is somewhat new though, not a lot of real world tests to be found on the net.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!
Jasper
On your garmin do you look at : power, 3 second power, 30 second power or watts per kilo?
Hi Durianrider, I've got an gen 3 Ultegra stages PM. This weekend it poored down with rain during a ride and shortly after that I got really high power numbers. My zero offset numbers were really high as well, like +/- 1290: should be around 890-920 normally. I checked the battery door and o-ring seal, they were installed just fine and couldn't see any water inside the unit....Once home I left the battery door open in a dry room for a day, put the battery door in with the o-ring, seems to be working just fine now...Any idea what the problem is/might be? I think it might be water ingress...Thanks
just take the battery and door off and let it dry out a few days. Easy :)
The battery cover is still garbage. I've already lost the rubber seal. I've also got a Powertap P1s pedals and they are so much better than Stages. The signal is also so much stronger and more reliable.
Interesting to note Durianrider uses 175mm cranks. Bikes his size typically come with 172.5mm cranks. He must somehow order up special his Giant Bikes with longer cranks. I would like to see a video comparing them on climbs. Often times I have read how short cranks with higher cadence is the way to go. School us Durianrider.
Depends on fit
Can you review or talk about the 4iiii power meter
I ride a Norco Valence Carbon 105, 58cm frame. Which one should I buy?
OK, so if your bike has a FSA Tempo 50/34, still worth it as a new to serious cycling noob? As i understand it, you would have to get the entire crank set AND replace the BB. Your thoughts?...anyone? THANKS.
What's your question? Don't replace your crank if you don't have to
pooyah666
Thanks.
I have fsa 50 34 BB30 and stages fsa got it second hand off ebay, think its broke as i can only get average power to 260 LOL.
razerbaz
for how long 260? 260 for half an hour is not bad if you're not a big boy
Hey mate what stem is on your TCR looks seriously beefy and nice af +durianrider
+Ashman Racing Giant Contact SLR

I have a SRAM crank arm. Am I able to install a Stages power meter?
Durianrider, Can u explain how to purchase these things? Do I need to buy it with s crankset or without?
+AD 19 why not just have a look ? because the answer is yes and no! Right now stages does sell full packages and have some really great deals! Also they respond to email questions really quick!
www.stagescycling.com/en_US/products/
What about Sram Red?
Can anyone help please? New to road bike and looking to get power meter have giant defy 0 has RS500 crank called few lbs and have been told need to replace complete crank to 105 or ultegra before any of stages will fit? Please help.
Alexander Thomson no thats nonsense just buy the one thats the right length eg 172.5
However i have a stages and wish ide of bought the pioneer instead
My stages only works correctly 80% of the time and it drives me insane
Is it possible to use a stages dura ace 9000 on a dura ace 7800?
yes.
Do the 105 shimano stages fit on 6800 shimano crankset ?
LightYear you buy the left crank arm with the unit bonded to it
LightYear i have a 105/ 5800 stages it has so many data drop outs it drives me insane ive tried everything to fix it
if i was you ide buy the pioneer version
Thanks, I'm considering of buying 4i power meter, less expensive and they seem good. Any experience on them ?
4iii > Stages. PERIOD.
ı m buying new road bike can you advice me my budget 1000$
+lorne malvo buy a used aluminum 10 speed bike on craigslist, then buy a garmin 500, then buy a used power tap. Will be the best way to spend you $1000. What no one ever told me is that once you buy a new bike, as soon as you walk out the door it loses half its resale value. For a new bike Fuji to me provides a better bang for your buck. Giant, speacialized, trek, etc. are all over priced. Fuji bike will be $500 cheaper with better components than all the other brands.
Right now with winter going on in the U.S., you can get a heck of a deal on a good used bike. Most people buy these bikes and ride them twice then give up on cycling.
thank you very much
+lorne malvo listen to him great advice
ok ı m searchıng
hay Harley really enjoy your video's. So want a power meter. you have like six. would us sell one. I'm so open if u don't ask u don't get. come on fella throw a dog a bone
