This is the best and calmest explanation on "atonement" that I've heard in 30 years of ministry since seminary. No yelling. No trying to impress anyone. No misuse of the Scoffield literalism rampant in fundamentalist evangelicalism. My good brother, I bless you for your good teaching ministry and humble heart to help set hearts free from the ridiculosity of biblical literalism.
My brother, you are gifted with the power of teaching and preaching. Thank you for giving your time and energy to studying this and explaining it to the layman and your congregation.
"because whatever our theories of the atonement do for us to be true, they must point us back to each other with more love and compassion and kindness, more of the grace of Jesus in our bones" - This is a key point for me. Thank you so much for the clearest overview I've come across. I think all these theories are complementary aspects of one complex event. You didn't mention "purification for sin" Heb 1.3 cf Acts 10.15, 1 Pet 2.5 where, like Levitical sacrifices rendered specific people suitable for use in God's service for a time, the purpose of Christ's sacrifice was to do this for all people permanently. Isn't this a recognized theory of atonement?
Thanks the last explanation is the first time I hear 😮 each has a strong Foundation thanks goodies that these are theories which has nothing to do with our salvation😂❤
“Jesus did not come to change the mind of God about humanity. It didn’t need changing. Jesus came to change the mind of humanity about God.” -Richard Rohr
Yes. It never really caught on but the gist is that God “punished” Jesus as a demonstration of God’s displeasure with sin but not as the actual punishment due sin. It’s not a perspective I have read a lot about though.
Jeremy is the most intellectual theologian i have ever met!!!! And I’ve rubbed shoulders with the best…warren, billl, obama, murarry…and Allan…i was called “little Al”
John 3:16"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." no angry God ,a loving God Rom3:23For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. 24Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. 25For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood.

Really good teaching.
Glad it was helpful!

Amen. Salvation is through Jesus. Our doctrines and theories are only there to help us love him and follow his way.

I recently came across one theory called moral government theory. Have you heard of this?
Yes. It never really caught on but the gist is that God “punished” Jesus as a demonstration of God’s displeasure with sin but not as the actual punishment due sin. It’s not a perspective I have read a lot about though.

You started off saying atonement is all it is. Then later you said it is an incomplete description.
Why do more churches like this not exist?
Thanks for watching 🙏

Every atonement theory would celebrate those verses 🤷♂️
