A huge thank-you Abe. You were spot on, you nailed it for me Abe. 👍 After 9months of scratching my head and trying to work out what was going on with my corals (six-year-old mixed reef), despite my ICPs always coming back within range. After so much researching and trying everything I could think of, I happened to stumble across your video and everything you were saying made sense, so I decided to go down the carbon dosing path. Now, 4months later, and my tank problem has been solved!!! 🙏 It's no longer a mystery to me - carbon was the missing link in my tank. Your theory regarding carbon becoming deficient and the most basic forms of life being unable to grow is exactly what was happening in my tank. In hindsight, it makes so much sense.
My tanks are just stuffed with coral. My 1200 gallon system seemed to stall for growth. After watching your video I started dosing viniger in my calcium like you did and man my coral has taken off again. Thanks so much for the info ! I’m sure my system was carbon deficient as well
Thanks for getting a new video out Abe, my last order from you was spectacular. Big recommendation to anyone on the west coast looking to make an order, Abe's frags speak for themselves.
Very informative and well thought out as always. I can appreciate how you do not jump to conclusions and dont just tell people do this, this is the way. With that being said we can lookbat your corals and see the result. Thankbyou for taking the time to make this.
Your results are very interesting to me, given the fact I have a now 5 year old tank where I was noticing similar coral heath changes. I have been dosing vinegar for 3 years and decided to pull that doser to replace it with Kalkwasser. SPS coral color and growth have come back strong, since making the change. That said, I have also returned to dosing MB7 in conjunction with weekly coral snow. Regardless, our systems keep us on our toes, which is half the fun / frustration of this hobby. Great video.
Very informative Abe. Love the content. Your corals are looking exceptional and carbon dosing has really helped to bring them up to another level of growth and color.
Your videos are so incredibly well thought through and perfectly executed - and as a viewer we are just bombarded with information and it takes about three months to fully comprehend what it is you actually said. Love it, thanks for doing all the work behind these invaluable lessons…😊
As usual, great intelligent content. I do carbon dosing with the Red Sea product and I learned the hard way to back off on dosing levels, so I wasn't zeroing out, but just holding NO & PO at good levels and now I no longer have bacterial or algae outbreaks and everything is very happy. It is definately good to hear your experience and how you approach these issues and then share great info, which helps all of us. THANK YOU!!
Great vid! The problem that I have had with dosing carbon in my 19 year old reef is overgrowth of Aufwachs in my pipes. This resulted in lots of this biofilm being ejected into the tank whenever the sump pump was cycled off and then on. I did not find any benefit to the addition of carbon, so I stopped adding it. I guess everyone has different experiences. Please post more often. Your videos are very thought provoking. Cheers, Chris Teaching kids about climate change and ocean acidification with corals in the classroom.
This makes so much sense. I am just getting into Acropora. I don’t have the best lights in the world but I could grow montis just fine. I picked up a could frags / colonies, even got a frag of Walt Disney from my brothers tank. None of the Acro in my tank has shown any lose or change in color and grown was great from day one. My tank is 3 years old and I carbon dose for a year now
Makes sense! I dosed carbon with Brightwell Reef BioFuel several months to a year ago to reduce nutrients and stopped after nitrates zeroed out. Tank did look healthier though during that process with better polyp extension, color (at first), etc. Will begin using again since I do now dose Brightwell NeoNitro nitrate source as needed (5-10 ppm). My tank is approaching 2.5 years in age so maturity is theoretically there. Thanks for the analysis! 😃
Tropic Marin has 3 carbon dosing products that you may want to look into. Elimi NP, Bacto Balance, plus np. You switch between the 3 based on your nutrients. Supplies a carbon source without bottoming out or raising nutrients. Im having fantastic results with it.
Fantastic looking corals Abe! I remember follwing SunnyX on RC back in carbon dosing peak. My tank ran woderfully on that system. Over time I went away from it and recently got back to carbon dosing 6-8 months ago. I can share the same experience that growth has exploded the last couple months. My tank is still new but I believe that my carbon was limited or the corals really like their bacteria
I love your videos. They are some of the most informative reefing videos out there. I gave up on controlling nutrients with chaeto a couple years ago when I discovered carbon dosing. Note that you mention it, that’s when my corals started doing really good too! I had good luck with NOPOX for a year but I switched to the tropic marin line. I’m still working on getting it dialed in. Thanks for the videos
Nice update, and nice to hear you open up to bacteria driven systems. I remember we discussed it years ago. You should look into Tropic Marin. As you say, carbon dosing is not equal to ULNS. This is what TM offers products and methods for, for years now. :)
I really love watching your videos. You cover a great deal of detail that can help hobbyists. That said, I've never been able to keep any SPS coral, and have no idea why. At some point, would you be willing to make a video on how YOU would start a tank that is destined to become an SPS dominant tank? There's more to it than adding water and salt. Thanks!
My Frogspawn for month or two was retracting and never "perk up" then last week and half I started dosing vodka . Within a week polyps extension came back. So, I'm true believer of Carbon dosing. Btw Awesome Tank you have!!
Hi, Abe. Maybe you have it, or maybe it’s too late given that you’ve already introduced a carbon source, but the data provided by a Triton N-DOC test would be an interesting share. Hands down, the best coral color and growth I have experienced was with a six-year-old system dosed with a carbon source. I can’t say that what I experienced was due to carbon depletion or from what could have been a very happy bacteria population, but dosing carbon seemed to have made a difference. Regardless, I don’t think the why matters too much. The corals were very happy and that made me happy. Thanks for sharing!
Nice - I used to carbon dose but now I am super lazy. My tank was a few years old and I am not sure it did much, although I started making a DIY coral snow and adding the carbon (TM Bacto Balance) to that along with a little aminos - I think that was the best way to do it as I didn't notice any negatives with the aminos and I saw positives I do think a NO3 to PO4 ratio of 100:1 up to 200:1 is generally agreed upon and Mike Paletta found that was common in the best reef tanks he looked into parameters on. Still for most tanks less is more an I spent years doing too much (and went way too far the other way I fear)
Love the results of Zeovit with nutrient dosing. Completely, agree, the misconception that Zeovit and ULN come as a pair is false. And you won't necessarily get the pale coloration as long as you keep your nutrients up. Great video! I've used Zeovit with nutrient dosing plus heavy feeding and never had ULN but amazing growth, results, and coloration. But then I got AEFW and shutdown my tank 1.5 years ago. If I was to restart today, this is absolutely the method I would go again. Can get expensive for large tanks though.
Informative as usual Abe, thank you. How high do you have the t5 unit above the water level? Also, what t5 tube configuration would you suggest for a 6 x 24 watt unit for acro's . Thanks in advance.
Hi Abe. I have recently upgraded my light fixtures to a Giesemann Stella 5 feet hybrid, currently running 2 ATi actinic 2 coral blue. My tank is 6 foot long and I would like some recommendations on your choice of mounting height and LEDs for the center panel, thank you.
This was an awesome video and definitely earned a subscribe! Question, my 75g reef is 8 years old, I am dosing 6-7 ml of red sea nopox daily. Does this count as a form of carbon dosing or am I still missing one of the building blocks for the redfield ratio? My nitrates are
I had the same issue, recently, I did the same thing increase nitrates and phosphate, but it doesn't seems to work, it helps a little in terms of couration but things seems to be worst. So I suspect the lack of organics in tank despite the high level of nutrients level. I ended up removing half of my chaeto, reduce skimming, tank starts to get dirty. Coral seems recover from pale but at the same time the increase in organics plus elevated nutrient level from before cause some of my sps to brown and some stn. I ended up carbon dosing to reduce the nutrients. It is like a chain of reactions :(. Now, I try to maintain my nutrients at acceptable level to stop the browning. Sadly some of sps stn away already. But the thing I disliked about carbon dosing is it will cause pH to drop quite significant depending on hw much you dose :(.
Great video. What are your thoughts on Bacto-balance? I’ve been wanting to try it but wasn’t sure about the carbon dosing claims I saw in the particular video. But after watching this I definitely want to give it a shot
Hi, could please give more details about the MH lights that you have been using in your 140g? They are SE? What is the brand, and temperature? Where can I find the lamp, reflectors and ballestins? Thank you so much.
Do you suppose this theory applies to lps as well? I'm my mind it would, however I wondered your opinion. I've had some strange color shifts in my tank over the past 2 or so years. My tank is going on 3 years old.
How did you come up with the ratio for your carbon/calcium chloride solution? Is there some form of demand test you performed to find what you need to last 8 days?
Can you do an atoll update with some more info on ammonia dosing. I found the same thing with dosing nitrate so I just dose tons of phyto, but ammonia seems way less annoying
Best content creator in the Reef Biz. Please no more second guessing and keep putting out videos, you truly are talented.
100% agree.
Agreed!!!
Yes by far the besr

Thoroughly enjoy your content, this is how the hobby evolves. Thank you.
Excellent hypothesis that was very well explained from all angles. Impressive work.
Thanks for getting a new video out Abe, my last order from you was spectacular. Big recommendation to anyone on the west coast looking to make an order, Abe's frags speak for themselves.
We NEED more video from you ❤❤❤
True genius of the reefing world. Please post more content, even if it’s just you cleaning the glass.

❤️Thanks so much!
No fluff, just knowledge bombs every time.
Hello Abe, thanks for delivering another Masterclass.
That's exactly my experience when I started carbon dosing at maintenance levels about a year ago my corals perked up. Well put together video ❤
How much are you dosing and how often?
Your results are very interesting to me, given the fact I have a now 5 year old tank where I was noticing similar coral heath changes. Such an inspiring message. Anxious to see more of your videos and your tanks. Awesome!!!
No wonder your tanks look incredible with your knowledge and intelligence
非常喜歡你的專業視頻.
Nice to see your breakdown of Carbon dosing, well done Abe!
Very informative Abe. Love the content. Your corals are looking exceptional and carbon dosing has really helped to bring them up to another level of growth and color.
Finally the time has come. A new Video from you.👍
I’m soo hyped for this!!!
Great video, jammed pack with information and straight to the point.
Excellent observations. Good to hear from the Acromaster.
Clear, concise and Informed. phenomenal content.
Abe…. Hands down the beat content
What a pleasant surprise. Never heard it explained this way.
ATI Nutrition C:N:P works on this basis. Its carbon, Nitrogen (not Nitrate), and phosphorus (Not Phosphate). Works really well for me.
Something to think about! Thanks once again abe!
Need more content Abe! Well done. Still trying to get my tank half as nice as yours
Nice to see and hear from you. Great info. Thank you.

Bro!? Where have you been? Please post more and share yours success with sps ! 🙏. Good to see you back😉
🎉🎉 New vide from Abe!! Great walkthrough on the challenges a persevering reefer face!
Abe you are awesome, I was so happy to see you posted a new video. Thank you for your perspective
Love it as always 👌
❤ the Video and your Approach on this topic!!
Love your informative videos! Thank you for always helping the feeding community. Great job!
Awesome content as always for the intermediate to advanced Reefer. Abe we appreciate you!

Abe speaks. I listen.
The best content. I have a one question. why don't you dosing KNO3 but Ammonium chloride..
This is interesting this is why I love aqua forest probiotic salt

Very interesting 💯
Amazing and informative as always. Thanks Abe for doing this.

I love your vids. For carbon dosing, look into the tropic Marin products. They have what you need and it’s much more natural than vodka
why wouldn't i use a bottle of vodka? It is dirt cheap compared to TM? You can also drink some while you reef. One for you, one for the tank.

Maybe. Definitely go slow with it if you decide to dose. My torches had less PE for a bit after starting but have recovered since.
Heck yeah
Sorry so the zeolite is just a media for bacteria? And then the vinegar is the carbon you're doing?
I see you mentioned phytoplankton. Do you dose this? Is there any value in dosing it at all?
Yea I have come to really like this guy no bs and not trying to sell me something
What’s the name of 4:46? Thanks Abe!
Have you tried Triton N-Doc test? It will gives you an insight of the nitrogen and dissolved organic carbon level in your tank.
