It's the most common chemical to neutralise acid spills. Good to have in the garage.
Thanks for the tip. I use to have a cell tester that was basically a specific gravity tester. Will try your method, but will use a copper wire and a gator clip to the meter lead to avoid putting the lead in the acid and discard the wire after. Always a good practice though to have baking soda on hand for safety reasons.

Bill, just because you can get a full battery voltage across all the cells doesn't mean you have a good battery if it can not pass a drawn down test. Surface charge which shows the battery to show proper voltage doesn't mean it has capacity to do it's job of starting the vehicle.

Check from cell to cell with your multimeter leads for a more conclusive cell isolation practice , 2- 2.18 volts is a good 12 volt battery read from cell to cell

A hydrometer is the proper tool for this test.
12.9V, nearly charged? that's fully charged with an additional surface charge on top.
13.2 is fully charged
You could have shown checking between cells also.

An Hydrometer is a much better and cheaper tool to check each cell :)
One of the cells is 1.75v. Is that a bad cell?
The Allstate battery company said, NO WAY, use a hydrometer. After I tried this method and each cell added 2v as i went from cell to cell. 2-4-6-8-10-12

does any body knows what happens if is 1 or 2 bad cells ? the battery can still show 12 . somthing v. right ? but will the car star since im in a situation mecanic wants to replace starter and i want to make sure i m not over looking the battery i took it to auto parts and he says its only 40 % charge but why didnt work when i use the cable to jump star? thanks ( i have been having flicking lights and finally car is only doing a click thats it ( all the lights and radio work )

Batteries for solar applications are typically unsealed.

Not SAFE. hydrogen is explosive and present. Check and clean terminals.... Charge your battery (drive car around for 30 minutes).Stop and wait 15 minutes then test the voltage, should be over 12 volts. and under 14v, under 12v replace battery (bad cell). To load test, turn on headlights while engine is off. Put Meter leads on terminals and watch voltage drop, if voltage drops below 12 within a few minutes go buy another battery. If battery passes load test but will not start car check wiring, terminals and starter. If battery is less than 4 years old check your alternator for overcharging.

The reason you do this is to make sure there's no difference between cells. If there is then you need to give it an equalization charge assuming it's a good battery

This guy does not know what he's talking about standing voltage for a fully charged battery should be 12.6 to 12.8 if it's only 12 volts, battery is bad or needs charged
Also when checking sales use the proper tool hydrometer which will show specific gravity

Anyone who even suggests putting a metallic anything into a battery cell is a complete idiot. You can cause a short and it WILL explode. Anyone with a lick of common sense will tell you this. ALWAYS follow proper safety procedure when working with a battery.
