I noticed that when you need louder sound in right hand (4:00) every note is played with a seperate impulse from schoulder/elbow. I liked that idea becasue as you said minimal muscle effort is needed....
That made me think if you are doing that same micro impulses when plaing legato piano??
In video abou 13 ways to play scale in 3:50(legato playing) you seem to just tramsfer a weight from finger to finger but without any visible impulse from the arm 🙂
Thanks, that’s a really good question and a fine observation.
When you make an impulse coming from the arm, you get a stronger sound, in other words an accent. One of the basic requirements for a true singing Chopin-like 𝒍𝒆𝒈𝒂𝒕𝒐 is avoiding unnecessary accents. So we need a smooth delicate transfer from finger to finger here.
However if we perform a “brilliant” legato alla bravura Liszt passages, it’s fine to use such micro impulses and provide a more straightforward pearly sound.
Of course Chopin’s music also allows it sometimes. This Sunday I am releasing a video about his 1st Ballade where I will be showing the same technique for a climax passage that is written 𝒍𝒆𝒈𝒂𝒕𝒐, but requires an ultimate emotional power.
But I believe that this particular etude can be interpret in either way.
