  • Since this RUclips Channel is all about teaching you ways to make and to save money, I thought that I'd educate you as to why you should NOT panic (or even call an exterminator) in many cases when you spot termites.
This is NOT professional advice; just common sense :-)

To explain what is happening many times when you spot termites, below is the text from a discussion on Facebook:
"People! We had a HUGE termite swarm this weekend! You’re probably wondering what that means.
Termites will swarm out of the ground once the colony is overpopulated and will try to start a new colony. If you are seeing them in your house, DO NOT lose your mind. I know it is scary, I know it’s freaky but here are some facts and tips to get you through it:
    1) Swarmers do not possess the capability to be able to chew through wood. They have no “teeth” so to say, so they’re not going to fly in and start eating wood.
    2) There is NO WAY to keep them from coming inside. They will get in through your hood range above your stove, bathroom vents and ridge vents in your attic.
    3) Swarmers do not always indicate an infestation. This is their mating season- you have to let nature take its course. Swarm season usually lasts for about a month. “Mother’s Day is the start, Memorial Day is the heart through the 2nd week of June” (can sometimes last until Father’s Day)
    4) Keep all exterior lights off! Swarmers are attracted to light like moths are. Even some interior lights.. if you don’t have to use your kitchen or bathroom lights, don’t! If you have blinds and curtains, keep them closed.
    5) Within 45 minutes of them being out of the ground, they’re going to lose their wings and die if they do not have a mate or a moisture source.
    6) Unfortunately, there is no treatment method for them. Any bug spray you use will kill them but it doesn’t prevent it from happening again. Your best bet is to get under a termite preventative with a pest control company. This will also ensure you’re covered if you have an active infestation
*YOUR HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE DOESN’T COVER TERMITES. Trust me, that’s why Pest Control companies exist!*"

I have the same issue in my apartment. Our building was just treated. The pest control technician said the same thing you said and suggested I should leave the exhaust fan on to deter the termites.

Thank you very much. We had a similar thing happen today where about 10-15 of these buggers dropped out of our range hood onto the stove. I had kind of the opposite experience with a pest control company where we Called Orkin out and they gave me a quote for over 10k dollars which included boran infused insulation in the attic. They used the phrase that they could be eating up to two feet of wood per day and that they could have all of the work done the next day. They didn’t explain what you just did in your video. Again thank you . I do have two more companies coming out to take a look and I am interested to see who is honest enough to tell me what you just did.

I’m having the same issue right now. Orkin gave me a quote for the tap insulation as well. What did the other companies tell you?

I have the same issue in my apartment. Thankfully, my landlord didn't send Orkin.

Here's a tip - capture some small spiders and let them make a web around the areas these termites come from. The spiders will have no shortage of food and they'll take care of the termites for you. You'll have a symbiotic relationship with those household spiders. Just make sure they're not big enough to bite and for the love of GOD don't keep black widows around.
