His captaincy was the 2nd half of his career, but we must not forget the facts which made him the first choice for captaincy after Sachin. Before his arrival, India team had a terrible tendency that they would win ODIs only when Sachin plays well. This streak was changed by Sourav Ganguly who reduced the dependency on Sachin by winning so many ODIs almost single handedly! We also must not forget that for many months he was the no. 1 ranked ODI batsman in the world before becoming the captain! No one can forget the elegant cover drives, square drives and the huge sixers. He was an incredible timer of the cricket ball. Probably he is the best left handed batsman India has ever produced..
