Well, that's the experience with music theory. For example, I play violin and guitar so when I grabbed a cello, banjo, and bass it's clear how the frets are a half steps, or how strings are tuned in 5th or 4th with the odd exception like the B on guitar, and I can play just not proficiently. The exception is wind instruments, you're almost always going in blind with those. Edit: Forgot to mention that if you know piano you're ready to play almost anything after you learn how notes are divided, give it a try.

For those whom dont know, the top string on the banjo is not usually fretted it's a sort of accent note you could say
in melodic styles you fret it quite often but mostly used as a drone in scruggs style, sorry for a year late reply

You’re supposed to pluck with three fingers, right? My dad told me that. I have no idea why the string starts in middle of the neck, though.
@@pixelfish3395 most "rolls" only require 3 fingers, but sometimes you can get fancy with a fourth. The 5th string is constant. That's why it's so far down on the frets, because you're never going to fret it so why have it in the way? It's what gives the banjo its signature "twang"
