so using L instead of R only happens for syllables starting with R but not for clusters, right? For example ประเทศ can't be pronounced as ปละเทศ, correct?
ล can be use instead of ร any time. And also for clusters, Thai people like to cut them out totally. So for ประเทศ you can say ปละเทศ or ปะเทศ for spoken Thai.

ผมคิดว่าจริงๆแล้ว เสียง ร ไม่น่ามีอยู่ในภาษาไทยมาตั้งแต่ต้น มันน่าจะมาจากภาษาเขมร แล้วก็ ภาษาสันสกฤต ในชีวิตจริง แทบไม่เคยเห็นใครพูดเสียง ร แบบชัดๆเลย ร่วมถึงเสียงควบกล้ำด้วย อีกอย่างน่าจะเป็นการอพยพเข้ามาของคนจีนด้วย

คิดแบบนั้นไม่ถูกนะครับ แต่พอจะเข้าใจว่าเป็นความเปลี่ยนแปลงตามกาลเวลา
ก่อนหน้านี้ อย่างน้อย 20 ปี ไม่มีการใช้ ล แทน ร เลย และการสอนหรือการพูด ค่อนข้างแน้นหรือให้ความสำคัญด้วยซ้ำ แต่ปัจจุบัน มีการละเลย จนกลายเป็นเรื่องปกติ และสักวัน ร อาจจะหายไปจากภาษาไทย
ถ้า ร ไม่สำคัญ เราจะแยกระหว่างคำว่า ไร่ กับ ไล่ หรือ รัก กับ ลัก ได้อย่างไร
การใช้ ร เป็นข้อดีต่อการเรียนรู้ภาษาอื่นด้วย เช่น ภาษาอังกฤษ หากไม่ใช้ ร หรือใช้ ล แทน จะทำให้การพูดภาษาอังกฤษเพี้ยนไปด้วย และแน่นอนชาติที่ใช้ภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษแม่ เขาไม่ได้พยายามแปลการพูดผิดนั้นเลย
