I prefer reborn, because I had an idea that went into a very simmilar way to Reborn.
I had the idea of a clockwork sorcerer who inherited a clockwork by his parents (as arcane focus). A local cult found out about my powers and kidnapped me. Their best Artificers, Smiths, Tinkerers, Clerics and Druids changed my body into a mix of construct and humanoid, and they wanted to make me their magical slave.
I however woke up before they meddled with my mind and fled.
The are still looking for me and I want to see my parents again, but first I need to kill the cult, and I won't act prematurely. I also fear how my parents might react to how these cultists changed me.
And I may not use the Reborn but custom lineage, but I find it interesting
Since everybody and their mother loves CoS, I see a lot of would be Alucards and Blades popping up in campaigns claiming that Strahd... is the father.

That would actually be a nice way to swap out a PC, like the party only has one shot of de-petrifying stuff and accidentally hits one of the old statues instead of their teammate.
I’ve always kinda wanted to play a character who gets out of a grave in the first session with absolutely no memories. Then every feature made it better this race feels as if it was tailor-made for me.
Don't need the DM to create the backstory. You can just hand him your Backstory and rp like you don't know any of it. That way, the DM can place triggers and if you notice, you get a cool moment.
There's a background for that called "Amnesiac" been in dnd since 2?

@@yanderenejoyer It's a "Dungeon Master's Guild" thing and is in the Second Ed/Third Ed and Fifth ED Dungeon Master's Guides. Fairly popular background for a good host of characters.

I want to play a Reborn who was once a powerful Order of Scribes Wizard who was trying to achieve immortality without going the route of Lichdom. But something goes wrong and portions of his memories and soul are now trapped in his spellbook. He wakes up lost and confused, the only thing nearby is a spellbook that talks to him in him mind, offering him power in exchange for help finding out what it is and where it came from. And now you're a Warlock who's patron is himself.

Reborn is so flexible for what it can be flavore wise and it's mechanics are perfect for basically anything undead, it's beautiful. I love it
i love the idea of a reborn who is some kind of once in a lifetime failed product of a Clone spell
That would make for a fantastic reborn wizard. Your earliest memory is popping out of an intricately carved urn filled with oily brine, buck nude with no clue how you got there. Your first instinct is to collect the books, tomes and odd spell components of your creator's private chamber and flee.
The whole previous lives and memories thing is instead based on the wizard who made you, and that wizard is obssessed with finding you; perhaps only to reclaim what was taken from it, or perhaps something far better or worse.
@@kylestanley7843 Or else the original wizard got their soul stolen, so while the magic to bring your clone body to life was successful, your empty vessel was not filled. Further, maybe it's possible to retrieve the old wizard's soul from whatever or whoever has it now. Might be a big reward in it for you.
Who knows? Maybe the old wizard planned for this, and left instructions in case his soul got claimed by a devil or something. YOU are the contingency.

This origin is how I justified playing a Warforged in my groups homebrew world. Kinda like Robocop

As a DM, my reborn player got arrested for breaking a law in the city they were in. The rest of the party attempted to break him out. They ended up sneaking him out in a bag of holding, and since Reborn don't need to breath he was able to stay in there for quite a long time. It was admittedly a brilliant move.
This sounds perfect for a way of mercy monk who uses the power from being reanimated to heal or harm others
I am SO imagining the potential of a lost Reborn meeting his new friend Warforged, who has data memory corruption so they just stick together. RP level 1 potential =p and 4 hours of sleep combo to mock the others who sleep 8!

This is exactly the middle in between I was looking for a human/warforged hybrid. I like it. I have a great plot idea for a homebrew campaign for this. :)
This was absolutely perfect I've been wanting to play a knight of some sort from a bygone age that has been revived for a reason that even he doesn't know of. I was going to make a homebrew race but this is perfect.
I was thinking of that with the petrification backstory maybe add a couple of levels of warlock or maybe cleric or paladin

I had a whole campaign idea revolving around the party being characters who woke up in their graves one day, centuries or even millennia after their deaths, for a purpose they neither know nor understand.
'Wanna be a Whitewalker? Now you can be a Whitewalker!'
This couldn't have been released at a better time. I am about to start playing in a Curse of Strahd campaign and this is perfect for my redemption paladin!
The Reborn can be used for so many different Shadow of War characters. Talion/Celebrimbor, "the machine" (an orc who has been cleaved in two and then their crew reconnected the parts with machine parts) or "the stitched" (an Olog who has been beheaded and then necromancers reattached their head and revived him)
Phantom rogue, hollow one, Reborn. Put them all together and you get an almost immortal Undead assassin
This sounds less like a person died, then returns in their own body as undead and more like a soul was placed in something and it animated it, be it another dead body (spoilers for a Pixar movie), parts (Frankenstein), a straw "doll" (Scarecrow from OZ), armor (Full Metal Alchemist style), and so on.
Im so happy this race came out, I recently had a character death and they were a warlock so in the contract we said they sold their body for another soul to possess if they died
My toon just died in ID:RotF. The party’s trying to res him but my dm and I are working on him coming back with this as a base and death having changed him.

Random idea Reborn Hermit Ancestral Gaurdian your a promethean style reborn that has more vivid visions of unfinished business of the spirits that haunt your various body parts and when you rage you lose consious control of them causing the spirits to manifest while in a black out rage.
Well... if workshoped a little then Reborn just takes care of 2 of my character ideas:
1) Half-dead character that slowly turns into full blown 'undead'. Made pact with Raven Queen to stay off transformation as long as it can be since his condition was not treatable by normal means (only something like wish or true ressurection could revert him to full life). But that character was in the end sharing the body with the ramains of Nerull's counsiousness and that was what was making the transformation into full 'undead' (the looks were more and more of those of Nerull's).
2) The Grim Reaper who is extremly old and whenever he dies he got reborn in few years in his version of Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion. This character lost most of his memory and is trying to figure out who he really is, what is this curse he thought he is under and in long run wants his memory back. My spin would be that he turned out to be as old as death itself - the first one who ruled over death before he gave that role to first god of death. And due to that he would no longer be able to walk with party (too powerful/too much knowledge).
I am speculating that their next books is going to have something with the Magic the Gathering world Innistrad or Barovia
Or it could be the full Demiplanes of Dread (which Barovia/Ravenloft is just a single part of) but yeah this, to me, feels more like an Innistrad thing.
A Thief Rogue who got themselves hanged for thievery by the city guard...only to come back as a Reborn on the gallows.
A Vengeance Paladin whose sheer commitment to their Oath, literally brings them back from the dead as a Reborn.
A Bard whose anti-propaganda to a tyrannical king eventually gets him murdered...and he returns to life as a Reborn to haunt them.
A Wizard whose experiments with immortality either petrifies them, or forces their consciousness into a constructed body, or suit of armor. ; )
A Fiend Warlock who tried to outsmart a devil by arranging their own premature death to escape their soul being stolen...only for their soul to be taken anyway, and their body resurrected by their Patron to continue serving them.
A Great Old One Warlock who is, quite literally, a fragment of an evil star who gains sentience, a Changeling who must slowly develop their own personality.
A Battlemaster Fighter, who was created from the...ah, "various parts"...of an adventuring party who got blown up by a FIreball from an evil lich...their various maneuvers are the muscle-memories of the former adventuring party members.
Idea #2 Reborn Folk Hero Zealot Barbarian, a heroic martyr of the people who's been so long gone he's undead but still keeps answering the call when they send priests down to wake him up.
The reborn really makes me think of Mollymach from Critical Roll

A reborn grave cleric that is literally made up of an entire graveyard of people. There's a good reason for a d6 in whatever skill you want. You could be the combined consciousness and body of over 30 people.

I actually modified the second origin into an Oblex that swallowed the lover of a very powerful mage who then tried to get back his lost love by turning said Oblex into a Reborn. It’s a really weird character concept, I know, but I’ve loved the Oblex ever since I first found out about it, and I wanted to show it some love.
Making a Circle of Spores druid that is basically a corpse reanimated by the fungus that grows upon it. The fungus is dedicated to keep spreading its spores and animate more bodies.
I came back to this video because i had the idea ro play a Nazgul-like character that essentially went through all the stages of grief on their way to Limbo and they got really stuck on Anger. They were *really* stuck on anger. So they were reborn as a hellfire-angel of death in the service of Zariel as a fiend warlock :>
Mr. Wartumor is stitch together animals in a cloak. Soul of a druid remade into an artificer who aches to reclaim his wild wildshape through use of a necromantic patchwork plague. He uses his 4 extra hours experiment.
Okay but like... I love the idea of playing a half-construct. Warforged don't hit me the way they used to, but this is _perfect._
A lot of my ideas come from pathfinder, such as making an Android or a Living Monolith. Undead Reborn don't strike me quite the same way, but I do like that too.

I’m making an Oath of Vengeance Paladin using a Reborn Drow. I’m setting it up that he was killed in a raid, from what he assumes was another house, and has somehow reawakened in the outside world. He doesn’t know how long he’s been dead, but in exchange for being a guide, he’s planning on using the adventuring party to exact his revenge on his killers, as the party plunders the Underdark in search of their already missing teammates.
First thing i thought of a i read the Reborn - One-shot for New Players from an expirienced DM as they have a backstory ready and Pasts made by DM who thx to expirience can weave it in World Narative better
hi, i actually have a shifter phantom rogue that i'm designing with my dm. I originally wanted to do revived but he said i couldn't but we could keep some a lot of my original backstory, and now that the reborn lineage came out i'm hoping i can do this. he's already joked about be a cat with nine lives cuz i'm going to be a swiftstride shifter

I think it would be a good addition to the reborn to give the option to be construct and undead rather than just humanoid and then one or the other. A lot of the characters I envision in this category (Frankenstein's monster, possessed scarecrow, etc.) seem to fit undead/construct better. There would be difficulties with this kind of character, notably issues with healing, but I think it would be very interesting to play.

Got two reborn characters right now, and one of them inhabit a world where necromancy is a huge taboo. If they find an undead, everyone will make sure you're done.
Best part is, none of the party members know what he is, so its a constant, hide-your-death-marks kinda deal.
Been wanting to play a scarecrow transplanted from Oz into a D&D world for ages. Now looks like the time.

I have this idea for a Reborn College of Spirits bard (where my current sorcerer has to die) and is revived by 'mysterious circumstances' and finds his way back to the inn his party stays. They think it's their old friend back from the dead. In reality his body was a prime target for spirit infestation. Now he's infested with several spirits who have lost their memory and are trying to figure out wtf happened... It's a work in progress lol
Todd raises a really interesting idea with the dragon breath: that it might be used to not only destroy, but to turn inert things into a living creature.
My personal way to run dragons is to say that True Dragons were the first things to crawl from the primordial chaos at the dawn of the world. As such, they are living relics of that age, their bodies suffused with the magic of primal creation. Every part of a True Dragon's body is magical. Their teeth and claws are magic. Their scales are magic. Their bones are magic. Their blood is so magical, it can spawn serpents and draconic creatures if spilled on fertile soil or a natural body of water. Anywhere a dragon has done battle and been wounded, a popular of kobolds has probably cropped up. And Dragonborn are the product of sowing a dragon's teeth into the ground like seeds, and having them sprout fully formed and fully armed and armored from the soil.
Of course, their breath is magical. It's charged with elemental fury sufficient to render whole companies of men into sizzling husks. But by that same token, why should this power capable of destroying not also be able to create? Pathfinder has a kind of undead monster that was killed by dragon's breath, and then was reanimated (often by the dragon) suffused with that element. Why not make it so a dragon can breathe life into a dead body, or into the inert simulacrum of a person like a statue, suit of armor, or life-sized puppet?
There's the origin story for your Reborn Draconic Sorcerer.
I like the idea of mixed PC types. I hope they give us more of them. I wanna see a humanoid/aberration, or humanoid/monstrosity, or humanoid/ooze.
Warforged are created from the remnants of souls. This could be a way to also continue creating Warforged once in a while.
I just started a reborn undead patron warlock. She thinks she's a chivalrous paladin of the morning lord and is a lot of fun
But I also think this could be a great way to play The Nameless One from Planescape: Torment.
I was murdered by the prime muscle from the upper echelons of the Orzhov Syndicate. After my soul passed beyond the veil a spirit came to me from the Otherside. It came in the shape of a crow. All I remember before it came crashing into me I fought, kicked, and slammed my way out of the compost heap custodianed by the Golgari Swarm. In a daze I followed the caws and shadowy flaps of the big black bird 🐦 escaping from the sewers beneath the city. 🌃 Now, the black bird guides me one by one to the ones who murdered me. With each one that I avenge myself I regain piece after piece of my soul. After I am done with them then I will turn my attention to the rest of the Orzgov Syndicate. 🎭 CAW! CAW! CAW!
Love the Unearthed Arcana content, especially any of the unlife and spooky stuff!
DND wizard of oz is now psossible. The scaredy lionel, the dumb scarecrow (reborn) and the heartless warforged (tin man) with a ranger human (dorothy and toto)

Reborn would be a great hook for Resurrected characters.
Had a (Half Drow) Banshee like character I played for pathfinder named Maya...I’ve been wanting to transfer her over to 5e for a while but nothing did her justice... now I have everything I need.... a Reborn Undead Warlock....excellent. It will actually work better than the pathfinder build! So excited!
This is an ideal choice for my Tempest Cleric based on Warhammer Stormcast Eternals
Reborn Origin 3 seems like Jason Bourne or the Protagonist played by Daniel Craig in Cowboys and Aliens.

the Hollow One is set so that it is something you can become or gain additionally to your race/species, just like some of the Supernatural gifts like Anvilwrought from MOoT :)
(we are still waiting in suspense for when we can use supernatural gifts) :D
BUT i think it is super nice that we get to be more then one creature type now like in older editions :)
and think some of the other Races need a revision if this comes out, like also making warforged a Construct in addition to Humanoid, maybe make Dragonborn Dragon also, Goliath a Giant, Genasi Elemental, Aasimar Celestial, Tiefling Fiend, and so on :)
jep it might impact the game, but i personally would welcome it as it can also give more roleplay opportunities.

I have just seen this video, I think the Reborn would make a great death cleric. Someone digs their way out of the grave and only remembers the name of a death god. They then devote themselves to the death god to learn why it chose them.
Totally going to change the origin type to Celestial and reskin this as the Deva race from 4e. Loads of interesting story possibilities for this!
I’m currently playing a campaign where the other party members are a wizard and a paladin. The wizard is a necromancer who can commune with the dead. The paladin keeps casting Detect Good and Evil. What do these two things have to do with each other? Well, my sorcerer is Reborn. The party does not know this. My character does not even fully know this yet.
Between the wizard almost accidentally summoning my sorcerer and the paladin attempting to detect the undead, the party is on track to realize my character is undead before they themselves do. It’s hilarious.
Just about to play my first Reborn. More of a Dorian Gray-ish style, though. Rogue who was cursed when he tried to rob a Lich, now suffers the same immortal fate.

If you are a reborn do you keep the feets from your race? Ex. If I'm a half orc, do I keep the bonus on strength and the relentless endurance?

One point of confusion. I was going to make a half elf reborn. Would I take the Ability scores of the reborn or the half elf?
It is very similar to the Hollow One, lets hoping that gets implemented in the DnDBeyond character creator. I also noticed that you do not get any stat bonusses or negatives from this race option, are you meant to add it to your original race or is it so good, that it doesn't matter what your race was you don't retain any bonuses anymore
I think this goes with the custom origin stuff from Tasha's. When you pick a race in DNDBeyond you can go to the origin options and I bet they'll be there.
@@valandres Thanks, I actually read the whole document and i found it in the begging. you replace all of your current traits with the new ones and you put a +2 and a ! wherever you want. The downside is most humans will lose the human variant, if they picked it, which means you lose your feat at level 1. I have checked in dnd beyond and i haven't been able to find it, but ill take your suggestion and re look in that area.
The beginning of the document says that lineages override your original race entirely, if I recall. In other words, you could be any of the three lineages represented here, but you still have to be an elf or human or orc or whatever as your base race.
You can't just be half-vampire, because then you're missing half your family tree.
