Commerical SkeeBall-style machines are designed for the playfield to be removed - the sensors are behind there, and need adjusted and replaced from time to time! They literally just sit in there - no screws, nothing, in the common ICEBall variant.

I came up with a Unique Skeeball change: Instead of the two 100 point holes... there would be a single 100 point hole... that Slides Side to Side (motor and crank driven). This would make it a more interesting challenge, because you would have to have precision timing to land the shot. If one had the electronics skills.. one could also vary the motor speed... depending on the "Stage" or Difficulty you choose... (and it could also be static / off, or Erratic )
Another idea, was to change the board entirely, to using a 5x5? grid of holes. This would allow for various game types. For example... a 2 player game, where each player had to try to make a line of "5-in-a-row" (like the game "Fascination", or "Connect 4"). This would be accomplished, using multi-color LEDs, that would light up the Hole Bezels that had been Landed / Scored. When you alternate players, the dominant colors would change (IE: Red holes for player 1, Blue holes for player 2).
Various Games could involve having to land a specific hole, that lights up, within a set time period (before the light goes out). Points, or Bonus points... could also be awarded, based on how much time it takes to land a hole.
There could be Bomb / Trap holes... that are lit up a certain color... that you need to avoid. If you accidentally sink them in a Trap hole.. you would lose a ball / life. Or deduct points from your score.
A mini-projector might be used, to project images onto various parts of the machine... to create different environments.
A powerful shaker motor could be used for special effect modes... simulating earthquakes, storms, cannons... etc.
The main ramp.. could have a pop-up "bumper-cylinder" ..that goes up and down... if it has been triggered in a certain game mode. Thus, you would either have to shoot around it... or time a center shot before it raises.
Strobe lights, A Disco Ball, and or Laser Beams, could also be used for interesting effects / modes.
While most Skeeballs only release 9 balls per play... you could also have an Infinite ball return mode... to see how many points you can score within the Countdown Timer sets ...Similar to those Basketball hoop games.
If the game is driven by PC.. you could have specialized music, sound effects, and programable light-show effects.

Suggestion on ball sensing: use optos instead of switches. Modern commercial machines use an infrared LED paired with a sensor. With the amount of abuse the switches would take from the balls, this will last MUCH longer. You can see the actual part used on ICE's website, though in the DIY spirit custom making PCBs would be the way to go.
