It isn't hard to keep it quiet. Lydon was basically left out of the loop. When he was made aware it was made clear he would have no contribution to it. I suspect his support of Trump played a big role and the fact that Disney wouldn't be able to control him
I never liked JL, and some of his quotes actually really pissed me off. But I always get a bit cynical when bandmembers argue over money; especially when they're punkbands, who (used to) shout about all that's wrong with the world. About all songs the Sex Pistols ever wrote are credited to 4 members, depending on the line-up by the time the song was written, which I think is fair. So I think every living pistol should get its fair share: Matlock, Jones, Cook and Lydon. There shouldn't even be a lawyer involved in the whole thing. It doesn't even matter who's right or wrong and on which date who was informed. It's as simple as that. Furthermore: Disney goes punk is a joke on its own. How to lose credibility?! The only comparison I see is Sid Vicious and Mickey Mouse both wearing a swastika. duh!
The thing is, we're just about to face the year 2022 - and people still debate about Punk, moaning and crying over what it is and/or isn't... Punk's been turned into a brand and became this unbearable cliché since eons. The triumph it once was, became just one of the stupefying "norms" - a label, and a super worn out one. Derek Jarman predicted this farce in "Jubilee" in 1977/78! The entertainment world dominated by countless "X Factors" and their moguls - and Lydon just participated in one on these shows lately, as the "masked singer"... could you have imagined a young Lydon do that? Possibly not but then, who knows - as much as I respect him myself for his past work, I cannot say I agree with, or absolutely trust Lydon on everything he himself insists to be "the truth". As people grow older, they change, their views and actions change (and not always for the better - Lydon compromised his quite a few times, even if for provoking a public reaction alone) and regardless of his directness (sorry, "honesty" is a bit of a tricky word to use at all times, even in Lydon's context; he is neither perfect nor he cannot be everything to everybody) - Punk simply added to the vicious (no pun intended) circle of fooling the public there is something forever and genuinely "noble" in it. The Disney Co. taking on punk is just one in a row of punk's long lost credibility issues. Spiritually, Punk may still be the driving force for someone at their tender age of 15, looking back on its roots for personal inspiration, but considering what utter material monster of a world it contributed to, what exactly is "Punk" these days? Yes, the Pistols (and PiL, and Lydon and all) are deservedly loved for their legacy but they all marred this legacy so many times - by refusing to let the legend/s rest in the first place, milking it to a rotting (again, no pun intended) level of self-parody, regardless of, as you say, who's "right" and who's "wrong". Oh, and regarding Disney characters wearing a swastika - Donald Duck already did. In "Der Führer's Face" back in 1943.
I'm old school heavy metal, I wasn't into Punk, but I saw The Damned, X-Ray Spex, Siouxsie and the Banshees, but this man, I could listen to John all day. He is truth, he tell's it as it is. If he's wrong sue him, but they won't.
@@TheColossalBlanket Not the same, but if you want to be a smart arse about this lets go. The case that Johnny lost, was backed (that's money in case you don't understand), by the Disney Corporation, and was in regard to the use of the Pistols music. What Johnny has now said refers to an expanded subject matter and is directed at Cook and Jones. If he's telling mistruths about them, and that he's stating them in public, they have the right to sue him for slander. I won't hold my breath. I'm afraid, "your arse is out the window", as they say

@@TheColossalBlanket I've no problem with your original point that he's been sued and lost. But the issue is this; In that particular case, how much money does John Lydon have compared to the Disney Corporation? What you don't seem to comprehend is that Lydon will have to pay his own legal costs. There's no point in him fighting on in a battle he may lose and for it to cost him a small fortune. With regard to my point. Listen to what Johnny says in this interview. Perhaps, then you'll understand. He lost his case trying to stop them using the songs, but the other stuff, if he's wrong they can sue him. I can't really make it any clearer, but there again, what do they say? The answer is straight out of Jonnys lips, Disney. How do the bastions of woke culture agree to fund something as dangerous a documentary on the Pistols? Take the danger out of it. Sympathies to Jonny for this treatment, and your wife’s illness.

That was what I was understanding it to be too. I was thinking this was a story of Steve Jones, not the Pistols. Not sure if that would interest Disney though. I guess people are going to be pulled in by the Pistols stuff, so that might take main stage. Am reading the book, so haven't got to the Pistols part yet, but I believe he doesn't paint Lydon in a good light and I think that is what all the upset is about.
@@shaunblackman5299 He can't stand the fact that no one has bothered to make a film about him yet, remember Sid and Nancy? I'm not claiming that it was a great film or anything, but Lyndon didn't like the fact that filmmakers were more interested in telling Sid's story instead of his.

In an interview the actor who played him had mentioned that “Johnny wasn’t involved unfortunately he didn’t want anything to do with it” which makes me really sad because I think the production team even lied to the actors etc and presented a bad picture of Johnny to the people that (I imagine) would’ve loved his input and approval. A disgrace.
I love John Lydon, but at the end of the day he sold all his publishing and rights, he has zero say in anything to do with The Pistols, they didn't even have to ask his permission for anything, it was a courtesy contact
That doesn't make any sense. If it was just a courtesy call, and they didn't need his permission, why sue him? Oh and btw, at the end of the day, there is this event called a "sunset" where the earths rotation creates the illusion of the sun setting in the horizon but whats actually happening is the earth turning on its axis and the sun gradually fading from our perspective on the earth from where we stand at that time of said event. Another part of the illusion is the light from the sun hitting the earths atmosphere and scattering photons, creating an "atmospheric refraction" where the suns already physically disappeared but the scattered light remnants leave behind the final visage of the suns appearance.
John obviously wanted to stop the filming of the bio, because Steve Jones showed him in a different light. He doesn’t want see the whole myth created around him crumble down with the movie.
I swing from liking this guy, to wishing he'd shut his mouth. He's not intelligent, as some seem to believe, he's just single minded, says what he feels at the time, and that can, and often does change so many years down the line, then change back again. For me, he's amusing, and entertaining to listen to once in a while, nothing much more than that.
John has been very misleading in all his recent interviews regarding the upcoming 'Pistol' mini series. Everything he has been saying in the media has been so far from the truth it's embarrassing. I have always admired the man but the Sex Pistols were a group of guys who were as relevant as each other, this is something John has always struggled with, if it's not about him it doesn't count.

I love John but I'm struggling to believe him here, it sounds more likely that they reached out to him and he was nothing but difficult from the start so cut ties and he's really pissed off and hurt.
It seems to me like Cook and Jones cooked this up between them for the $$$, and got Boyle on board, only to have the lawyers come back and say, "Wait just a tick, you need permission from the Rights holder to use this music." Which is likely when John got his nose out of joint. Because God forbid someone do something in any way connected with his life's work WITHOUT including him in it from the off (including a fat percentage of the deal). As always . . . it's about that filthy lucre, innit?
Even if you don't agree and are upset by Johnny's opinions or actions, you have to admit he is ALWAYS honest about how he feels and there's something incredibly admirable about that in a world full of fakes. The fact they are shaping his history without his input is a disgrace.
How could they even consider, not informing him, and then trying to sue him! Seems absurd, he is the very essence of the whole movement. Love John and his truth
Gotta say, Lydon looks pretty fit here, he's lost a lot of weight & looks 20 years younger than of late. Perhaps London High Court aggro is his thing & seems to have rejuvenated him somehow. His ex-bandmates may have had a point, & the judge effectively called him a liar in the verdict, but I wouldn't have taken a man to court whose wife is ailing at the time, personally - pretty low thing to do.
Just very underhanded of Jones and Cook, i think. John deserves a lot better - zero respect or shits given by them. Had it not been for John's true individuality they may well never have got a break and become "famous" in the first place.
Actually it’s majority vote since they sued McLaren, so if cook, Matlock and Jones all vote to use the music one way they out vote John. All they had to do is email John to let him know what is happening. Thinking about it they are not a working band anymore so they don’t actually owe John anything.

@@Muirton66 surely any production company wanting all sides of the story woud be negotiating with everyone, also roadies, promoters, recording engineers etc? The split up and band tensions all the juicy stuff they would want to include surely? he does butter ads, why not something about the band history?
"kill 'em"
Well seen GMB haven't uploaded the interview, unless the algorithm is suppressing it. Do you have the full interview, perchance?
He is truth, thats what got him in so much trouble in the early years. Love him.
John L total respect for him genuine and Would make a great presenter he has courage and is well informed 🙏
I'm old school heavy metal, I wasn't into Punk, but I saw The Damned, X-Ray Spex, Siouxsie and the Banshees, but this man, I could listen to John all day. He is truth, he tell's it as it is. If he's wrong sue him, but they won't.
They did sue him and they won.
@@sandwormgod4771 I have no idea what you're bollocking on about. You said they can sue him... I merely pointed out that they did in fact sue him and they won. It's not my fault that dealing with things that actually happen in real life is not your strong point.
@Philip Holmes Put a sock in it, pal. You keep spamming this every comment.
@@TheColossalBlanket I've no problem with your original point that he's been sued and lost. But the issue is this;
In that particular case, how much money does John Lydon have compared to the Disney Corporation? What you don't seem to comprehend is that Lydon will have to pay his own legal costs. There's no point in him fighting on in a battle he may lose and for it to cost him a small fortune.
With regard to my point. Listen to what Johnny says in this interview. Perhaps, then you'll understand. He lost his case trying to stop them using the songs, but the other stuff, if he's wrong they can sue him.
I can't really make it any clearer, but there again, what do they say? "You can't educate stupid".
Because you don't understand how the legal system works, I would suggest you get of your high horse, shut up and stop showing the world what an utter bell-end you are?
Johnny (Rotten) Lydon is always interesting and worth listening to. Plus he was the only person to publicly denounce Jimmy Savile as a paedophile in the 1970s.
Top man.
Lydon is a stand up guy, a genuine fellow.
Always liked John Lyndon .. he always speaks sense .. always looked at him as a very loyal fella ... Wish there was more people like him .. good on ya John 👍... Wishing his Mrs gets well soon 👍
When I was little and PIL was all over MTV, his interviews actually scared me. That fear evolved into fascination and amusement, and now complete respect.

He hasn’t lost that much, he just wears bigger shirts. Lol.
My mum bless her. Adored John Lydon. My mum never liked his music, but respected him as a person. My mum would not have heard a bad word said against him.
“Who wrote that for them “ 🤣😂🤣👍
The answer is straight out of Jonnys lips, Disney. How do the bastions of woke culture agree to fund something as dangerous a documentary on the Pistols? Take the danger out of it. Sympathies to Jonny for this treatment, and your wife’s illness.
Well said.
They will insert narratives that compliment woke. i.e Punk was good for women (for feminism) and "inclusive" it was open to all (which it was) but you get the drift as woke speak goes.
As a Northern Soul fan who got fully emersed in the Soul Scene, after a couple of years of dabbling in the music, just at the time that Punk started making waves. I absolutely HATED Punk music and Punk Rockers. OUR scene was the only fully 'underground' music movement. I hated it even more as it gained mainstream status....
But as the years rolled on, and I saw him on the box on chat shows a few times, I warned to John Lydon. I've got a lot of time for the bloke. Nice to see he's doing OK (apart from this palaver).
John Lydon who by the way looks great here is a creative genius and punk without Lydon isn’t punk at all, he is the man
John is also so right you cannot beat cooperations they own the world so he is 100% correct so you can understand why he is so upset

You and Jonesy have been in my prayers for the past year, ever since I discovered and read your books. May God bless you both, and your family.

Ironic isn't it that the other band members embrace and use to their own ends the very system they railled and rebelled against in 1977!
I thought it was a drama, not a doco, based on Steve Jones' book Lonely Boy. So that's why they don't need Rotten's view of what happened, it's all from Steve's POV
What the heck is a "doco"?
“who wrote that for them”. Classic.
He looks so much more healthy than he’s been for years. Lost weight and has a healthy glow to him, hell he looks younger too

And a Trump voter...
Nice one John , you always tell us truths
He is a kind man and decent.
This is why Mr Lydon is a well liked, respected figure. If you want honesty, get Johnny.
They were too scared to get john involved, cowards……….it’s going to be crap with out mr Rottens input.
This...and let's not forget...fucking Disney is funding that! DISNEY!!!
Its about Jones. Rotton can be ok but horrible to work for. Ive known 2 or 3.
I kind of agree with this but John had nothing to do with 'Swindle' and I fackin love that film.
Or Is it because he is a nightmare to work with?
John is the man 👊
The guy has more integrity than any of his peers. ("People hate honesty" direct quote from him) and that's why he is often excluded from even having a platform.. Much less participation in their fairytale.
I hate it how people automatically think, becuase someone says what he thinks, it's deemed it's truthful.
yes integrity...apart from when hes selling butteer
In an interview the actor who played him had mentioned that “Johnny wasn’t involved unfortunately he didn’t want anything to do with it” which makes me really sad because I think the production team even lied to the actors etc and presented a bad picture of Johnny to the people that (I imagine) would’ve loved his input and approval. A disgrace.
Johnny was and is punk, and the Pistols….. His life’s work as an artist will live on beyond this twaddle.
John is from every thing I've ever seen, is always honest . To the point that it pisses dishonest people off
I love John Lydon, but at the end of the day he sold all his publishing and rights, he has zero say in anything to do with The Pistols, they didn't even have to ask his permission for anything, it was a courtesy contact
One of my favorite humans.
A bit like I feel when reading your RUclips comments.

@@chill2025 Its based on Steve Jones autobiography, nothing to do with Lydon, Jones started the band two years before Lydon joined, the man is in a better position than anyone to do a series
Yes, shame on him. If punk came down to one figure, that epitomises the movement, it's Johnny Rotten.
I believe since John is so honest and has no filter the creators of Pistols figured it would be easier to exclude him.
Lydon was just a band member
The sex pistols wasn't his band
This man is the genuine article, and as unlikely as it would seem a truely honorable, and decent man. Undoubtedly he has his flaws as we all do, but he has been consistently honest, and true to himself. The day JL dies I will speak these words aloud "Punk is now Dead"
The world needs more of him
John Lyden is a man of principle.
Pay attention to his words ,he does not lie.
How could they even consider, not informing him, and then trying to sue him! Seems absurd, he is the very essence of the whole movement. Love John and his truth
The case went to court and Lydon lost. The film is based on Steve Jones' autobiography.
Easy because it's about Steve not Jonny simple really

John Lydon is really silly.
Anger Is an Energy! enough said !
Probably because he has different political views to the others, another form of cancelling someone

I reckon a lot of punk rockers were just there at the right time. But John Lydon was the genuine article.
Lookin’ like a punk John Cale.
Loop holey-wormy! Best words ever!
Pity John didn't enter politic's he would have made a great british prime minister rather than Boris "The Sausage Roll" Johnson.
Just very underhanded of Jones and Cook, i think. John deserves a lot better - zero respect or shits given by them. Had it not been for John's true individuality they may well never have got a break and become "famous" in the first place.
Then again, i've not heard Jones or Cooks side of events. It pays to hear both sides.
Actually it’s majority vote since they sued McLaren, so if cook, Matlock and Jones all vote to use the music one way they out vote John. All they had to do is email John to let him know what is happening. Thinking about it they are not a working band anymore so they don’t actually owe John anything.
