Did she take the money? ;-)

gonna invest in myself... biceps implants next
Hell yeah
Me...hairplugs
calf implants would be better
love the 90s punk music video angle, brother
It’s nice that RUclips photographers are trying to deliver this message lately.
Love this bit of advice. Before the travel restrictions I would “hire myself” to go somewhere and shoot for a week. A week in Tokyo shooting street, a week in Berlin shooting fashion, a week in Alaska shooting nature. These where the times when I felt I grew the most in my work.
@Danilo Martinez To ‘hire myself’ is a great way to put it; a very helpful metaphor! 🎯
I really appreciate more content creators are trying to drive this point home. Thank you!
Best advice ever man 👍
Another great thing to do is buying 2 or 3 (used, cheap) photography books from eBay or from some store.
I did this with William Eggleston, Stephen Shore, and Vivian Maier and it really changed me as a photographer being able to see all their work printed.
Great that you improved your photography by studying photography books. I enjoy them but I don't think that they really improved my photography. But I learned something about book layout and sequencing from photo books.
Uh. I like the wonky angle!!
The wonky angle says ty
This is a super good point! I just took an 800 mile photography trip to the Gulf of Mexico to shoot film and I think I took some of my favorite photos and made a really good video in the process.
Your voice is so soothing, it's like I'm listening on my Mindspace app...
I’ve recently been investing in printing my work more. It’s a skill I’ve been working on for years, and it really does help put the worth of camera gear into perspective. Cameras with more features and higher resolutions are fine, but I want better photographic ideas to try out and see how they look in a frame, with different paper finishes, or under various lighting conditions.
3:04 Totally like what’s shown in Pixar’s Soul. I love that feeling!!
I love this advice so much. Greetings from Mexico my bro!
Greetings from England
Tapping into that flow state is something that I’ve struggled with. Thank you for giving advice how to get back in it smoothly!
Thank you so much for this video, it can be applied to so much more than photography and it's something I really needed to hear
hahahah the RPG analogy was groundbreaking for me when I realised it a few years back. Absolute golden advice it's exactly like that, life is a game, the more experience points you put into anything you become a beast
Loving the new shots with this video. Cool to see how you’ve changed it up over time.
Really enjoying your new way of shooting videos. It's something unique compared to most of the other photography channels on RUclips.
Amen! Not a believer in its common meaning but man, so much truth in this short video. All of us should listen to it from time to time. Big thanks for that. Take care
Love the camera angles. Nice work George 🙏🏻
I too suffer from gear acquisition syndrome and I'm finding that printing some of my photos to hang on my wall is freeing. But yout idea of using the cash to travel for projects is a brilliant idea. Thanks for tip.
Thank you for this video. Its important to think exactly like you. Because if not, the creativity would die.
just a suggestion, i think the shots out the window showing you in the yard would be really successful with you pacing around in frame ☺️
Great video and an important reminder of what photography is all about. Thanks !
Amazing video George! That’s what I needed right now. Always looking for better equipment distracts a lot from the actual photography.
I really like the down tilt angles in this video
Damn, this is your best video so far. Keep it up man.
I love the way this is shot, George. Really pushing boundaries here
Really needed this tbh. Been down on myself alot lately and being overly critical on myself. Started blaming my gear and then the self loathing kicks in lol. No more woe is me im poor, and all the I'm gonna do my best with what I have and push my limits to improve
Man, I always find your angles and compositions on these videos so creative, inspiring and different in such a good way. Im planning on start making my own videos, and I'll definetily try some cool compositions. Thank you for the inspiration 🥰
Also, great video as always
Even before the pandemic begun, I was already saving for a project. But now, thanks to it, with what I've saved for a project and my personal savings, I'm now in a position to buy my first property and move away from the South East (UK) to pursue places like North Wales, Peak District, Lake District etc. Something I hope to do by the summer of this year. Assuming the economy isn't screwed up more by then...
The funny angles and the great advice in your video make this so much better.
And i helps my GAS 😄
You can tell he had a lot of fun making this. I mean look at my man's drip!
I feel this! I got a bunch of new photo books, and set up a week trip to Cape Cod in the coming months.
Perfect timing for this video. Some fellow photographers and I met yesterday to discuss a new exhibition. I should probably invest in the work, not the toys.
Wise words, I need to listen to this video repeatedly to cure me of perpetual temptation.
Fantastic video. This is the advice more people, myself included, need to hear.
A lot of great advice here . Really useful tips
straight to the 90s that top down camera angle was
He could start rapping or something from that angle and i wouldnt be questioning it hahaha
rlly needed this! so good!!! thank u george
so true... bought a linhof recently, but money is missing now for phototrips...
For sure but it also depends on the work you are trying to create. Gear should never be the first investment as it doesn't improve the quality but it can change the method/approach, which is something you speak about in relation to large format quite a bit. How do you think Lonely Cloud would feel if you created or completed it on 35mm?
I'm not having a dig, I just think there is quite a bit more nuance to this than is often portrayed by (very respectable) people online who also just so happen to have all of the gear...
It wouldn’t exist on 35mm, but I’ve shot digital images in the larger edit so it’s not really as much of a problem of gear. And actually I’m only using that film for consistencies sake
@@NegativeFeedback Fair, I think consistency is very important! I really respect your voice in the photography ecosystem, I just think topics like this deserve a bit more time to give some of the nuances. Roman Fox made a really great video on this last month, I would recommend it in addition to your advice.
Keep it up, George!
needed to hear this.
and hey squarespace lol
I haven’t thought about this huh. Thank you for such a wonderful advice.
Thank you for this. I really needed this today.
Love the new angles mate.
I use what I call the acros test. Every time I think about getting new gear I devide the price by $12 the price of a roll of Acros II film (one of the most expensive film stocks) and the decide which is more worth it... having the film or the gear.... the film has been winning a lot lately :)
I was taking a piss for much of the video so I missed much of it. It sounds good though they are the dark thoughts about these subjects no one else will discuss. Gear does weigh a man down. Clutter is just terrible .Thanks. Respects bro
this is honestly _very_ good advice. damn, thank you.
I know you're right, but Ive just seen that large tilt screen on the BMPCC 6K PRO 😁
Ohhh, big fan of that aerial close up shot
Give the same camera to two different people, one who has explored life and one who has only stayed in their little bubble and you will get two completely different images. Live, laugh, love, roam, dance freely and take in the personal viewpoints that allows you to express your greatest treasure of all, your ability to create from life experiences with any tool handed to you.
But George, we all know that next camera will make us 2x better! Loved the strange angle!
0:33 2000s music video wya
Invest in John Berger's Ways of Seeing, Understanding a Photograph and Susan Sontag's On Photography too.
Been on the look out for a new medium format to use as an alternative to my yashica TLR but came to a similar conclusion, i want to roadtrip in norway when we are able to travel
bruh video is so lit . angles are hillarious! :D
This hit
The angles George, the angles.
James Altucher has been saying for years: invest your money in yourself and the dividends are endless. for some reason it just didnt hit home till this video and your saying it again in this specific time in history. thanks!
To hell with your advice! Just purchased a Leica M6TTL with 35mm Summicron after shooting film for only a year. Time to go shoot gas stations and pastel buildings while pushing Porta 400 two stops.
No joke I really just bought that Leica and lens lol
You know you also need Cinestill 800 for those shots of gas stations and liquor stores at night, right? 🤓
@@uncanny_bassman psh duh! Gotta get them tonezzzzz
This is the jam. Wisdom.
Well said
This is really great advice...
I literally was about to buy a medium format camera but now I'll keep shooting with me digital :)
GREAT advice! Oftentimes it's best to take the long road - it's shorter. 😉
The exact video I needed atm. Big thanks to you british dude
I was just having this conversation with myself today you know as I was looking at getting a new camera lol 🤔🤔
I just love how I watch all your videos but I got so disappointed ruining my first roll that I never touched my film camera again .....
I really need to just shoot again thank you for this
100% Agree
Love it!
this was a nice idea
Thanks bro, I needed this 🥲
its so easy to become a gear head instead of focusing on photography itself.
Love this. Thanks.
Pretty insightful and a great idea
People buy gear because its easy. And they think that they can put a thousand or two in a new camera and the quality of their work will increase without doing anything else except that. From this perspective the investment in to the gear sounds very appealing. But the thing is that any camera these days is more than enough to achieve high end quality demands of any print. So its not the gear that matters.
Building a descent portfolio however requires time, effort and money too. And what it gives you is just a set of pictures.
This also speaks about how the photographer rates himself. Because if he cant invest time/money/effort in to making a picture it means he values his work very low, it means that those investments look not worthy enough to make even for himself. That way he sets his value to himself.
you made this video the day after I bought a mamiya 7
0:15 Sry, but it looks like a zombie standing in front of my house and looking into my window XD
Good advice!!!
very cool, George. very cool.
This is the tea right here;
I’m very happy with my gear, now my money just towards buying and developing film. And new photo books!
That steep angle ramps up the eno to 11. 😂💀
this color grade sure is something
Thank you so much for this great advice.
George, you're incredible!
great vid for real
agreed on investing in yourself.
Easy to say when u have an end-game camera:) Using 8x10 and saying it doesn't provide much difference is...hmm
And i've owned that camera for 4 years and not desired to buy any other lenses/cameras since, you're missing the point.
@@NegativeFeedback Because there is no reasonable way up (in terms of gear) to go. LF is a de facto standard of fine-art photography. I think it is often overlooked in terms of how much it gives in the perceived quality of an image and consequently someone's project/body of work.
Believe it or not, I do get your message, and for the most part, I agree with you.
That twilight skintone
Facts!
Honestly, wasn't expecting that. Its not a bad idea though! Invest in yourself rather than the gear. Instead of buying the multiple lenses that I wanted to buy I'm going to save that money, and as soon as traveling becomes a thing again, I'd like to take a trip somewhere.
Very wise words
Level up!!!
You remind me of the dude from the verve that sang bittersweet symphony
