This ballet drives me so much emotion, I know nothing about ballet, but this one feels so primitive, the colours, the way they move, it fits perfectly with the music. I'll always remember this ballet as a pure esthetic emotion.
I am so happy to see this comment because this is exactly what the ballet was supposed to evoke in 1913. The people had such closed minds they rioted and the thing only performed nine times before being buried. This is a very raw story of a tribe appeasing a sun god so that he will keep the Earth fertile and they'll survive another year but they have to give him a virgin in exchange. But this sun god is a sick bastard and he wants the girl to kill herself. And the final solo is her dancing herself to death!

I didn’t like the music until I saw the ballet. Then it made perfect sense, and I love the music without the ballet. Truly brilliant.

Magnificent! Very much as I would have imagined the premiere. Without all the audience noise, of course. It's hard for me to watch without an enormous emotional response. Yes. Tears.
When you think of how Robert Joffrey's wish was to find and stage that lost Nijinsky choreography which would really honor and set Nijinsky free... and that he did it with end-stage cancer and was able to see it realized you have to connect the two men eternally.
The truth is at the premiere, people hated it, because it wasn't like the classic ballet we know today. It stood out for it's extreme-like instrumentation and chord. It may have actually caused a riot when it premiered too (we're not sure about that part). I learned this because I'm currently studying music at my community college and this is one of the things we are studying.

It is one of the most epic moments in music and choreography and it happened because of Diaghilev bringing them together. Because they didn't like each other ever.
I love this piece. It speaks to me on an organic level. The bizarre movements, the tilted heads, the majestic, discordant music - it's all so uncanny and hypnotising. I'm a big fan of the original Wicker Man (1973) and Midsommar (2019), and this shares those unnerving pagan and folklore/horror themes. Thank you for uploading.
I was Lucky enough to see Gerguiev and the Mariinsky orchestra perform this achievement of a ballet without the dancer team in 2010 in Teatro Real, Madrid. It was probably one of the best experiences of my life. Now I can finally have the full performance. Thank you kindly.

However watching him conduct the firebird I think it was in 1982 it's on here he is the only human being alive I think who knows how to conduct that piece. What say you
@@fatovamingus I think sadly political alliances do tarnished the great contributions that some people can make to the arts, but Gergiev is the only person I've seen perfectly give the adequate tone to Stravinsky through the orchestra

In 1987, the Joffrey performed its reconstruction of Nijinsky's choreography for Stravinsky's ballet. A video recording captured the unrelenting oafishness of the Joffrey production.
In 2013, the Mariinsky Ballet performed this version of the same reconstruction, but this time applying superb technical dancing skills and precision timing, giving depth to the oafish characters that matched Stravinsky's erratic, passionate music. The results were brilliant. The music was conducted by Gergiev.
Now we know what the fuss was about in Paris on May 29, 1913.

@@christophedevos3760 Max Steiner absolutely took pieces of this for King Kong but akira Ifukube literally became a composer after hearing the Rite of Spring and he took a piece from the "sacrificial dance" for the theme as homage to Stravinsky.
@@fatovamingus yes, it has been so influential that many aspects are recycled over and over again in other pieces by other composers, it's 'une oeuvre phare' to put it in French.

I discovered a new way of writing down ballet choreography...my name is Aidan Ceagrave, I am the next Wagner!!!
This is the original Nijinsky choreography. So many are bemused by what they see. This is in fact a marionette ballet. This explains all the odd movements and group movements. These are movements you do do with marionettes. Jumping, arms flying up in a circle, done by having ix marionettes on a ring and grouping all the chords together. Their faces look wooden and their hands are alo mittens of wood.. The elbows sticking out and the head with limited movement. We should not be surprised as East Europeans love their Fairytales and perform them in Marionette theaters. Petrarch is a more obvious marionette ballet because the marionette theater is framed by the fairground. The ideal Sacre du Printemps would be performed in a marionette theater.

A ballet dancer (ballerino) in the masculine and (ballerina) in the feminine is a person who practices the art of classical ballet. Both men and women can practice it, however, the hierarchy and gender roles are strict. Belonging to a professional company requires years of extensive training and proper technique. The dancers are not marionettes as you indicate: this is improper! As for the ballet originally choreographed by Vaslav Nijinsky, there are actually two arrangements, that of 1913 and 1947. A choreography is quite simply a codified language which dancers are required to respect. Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring) is in itself a major work of the 20th century. Le Sacre (The Rite) is received neither scandalously nor gloriously at London. Ballet makes a strong impression and beautiful feeling in the Parisian capital. There is something to add !?! *Lucien*
@@LucienMarine Haphazardly reading your comment, The original commenter implied not that Ballerinas and ballerinos are marionettes, but the Rite of Spring could also be performed with actual marionettes mimicking the choreograph's erratic, contorted and deliberately primitive and foreign group masses, jumps and overall movement. Ballet and dance is a profound and ancient art connected to our bodies, of course it is sacred.

Thankx Fatova ! It's a very good vídeo quality. And I did like the dancers and the orchestra work. And if the Chosen One isn't the best, she's one the best in my opinion.
Oh I think Daria Pavlenko is "Chosen One Royalty". She adds the coolest little nuances to the "death rattle"

I had the original Marinsky from 2008 but Bel-Air classics took it down and pretty much threw all of the music theory students around the country over a cliff because they no longer had no longer had something to watch that engaged

It's amazing how the same ballet with the same music and the same roles can be performed so differently. The Mariinsky's production (more authentic because it's actually performed in Russia by Russians?) is avante garde but kind of zany, almost, whereas the Joffrey production (which I saw), seemed to play up the horror and thus is still the stuff of my nightmares. ALSO, the recent Warszawa production really played up the avante garde, making it look almost like a Neumier ballet. Purists probably didn't like it, but anything that plays down the horror factor is aces with me.
I guess to elaborate: these dancers look like they're kind of having fun, whereas the Joffrey dancers seemed to become those creepy pagans and had this "we're gonna getcha" vibe (to my 10 year old interpretation)
@lilliedoubleyou3865 I get what you mean and I completely agree. The Joffrey one used to be my favourite interpretation until I saw this just now. Not just the better quality but I love how you can actually see more emotion in the characters

@@Gelon01 you know I wrote a great response to you and deleted. This is Nijinsky's choreography at least it's the best we're going to ever get. When Joffrey Ballet performed it -televised- in 1989 there was a lot of emotion involved and not just because the dancers had to dig from within themselves to make the choreography meet the scenario Nicholas Roerich wrote (there was no video to watch there were no pictures-they were pioneering this ballet). But not only did it require that type of emotion which was captured on film but Robert Joffrey was dying of cancer and he wanted to validate and resurrect Nikinsky before he died. Hodson and Archer managed to do it. I feel like Robert Joffrey sort of set digitski free because this man's choreography was buried after nine performances. And he never received the accolades he deserved. Robert Jeffrey delivered that to all of us really. He died shortly after the performance. Yes the composition it's called the right of spring but at the time that it was composed and debuted it was in France everything was in Paris doncha know. So it became known as Le Sacre du Printemps (voice texted in a car so there were a lot of mistakes here)

This is very bravely done, but the movements of the dancers in the first act aren’t “jagged” enough, compared to the Joffrey Ballet (which for me is the standard). Amazingly, the Mariinsky female dancers appear to have difficulty executing the primitive, completely ungraceful mannerisms; they also seem averse to keeping their toes completely turned inwards, and there are individuals who are late much of the time. Still, I’m sure it was a hugely contradictory way of moving for them.
I do not know if I replied to this but YOU ARE SPOT ON. The Joffrey had the benefit of never seeing the ballet and had to draw from within and it is a marvel.
Agree. I have DVD of this one but prefer Joffrey. Wish that one was available on DVD.
I really wanted to like the Joffrey production, but found the dancing oafish and poorly timed from beginning to end. Nothing about its clumsy execution could explain why anyone would have been excited about Nijjinsky's choreography. Then I saw this, the same choreography, but executed with the precision and high skills that the Mariinsky ballet brings to its work. Don't forget Nijinsky trained at the Mariiinsky when it was the Imperial Russian Ballet.

Well...kit is the best QUALITY. But the best is the Joffrey from 1987: first to perform a ballet lost for 70 years and played only 9 times. They had no photos or videoto by and had to draw from their understanding of the pagan ritual concept and their own anger and pain. @@fatovamingus but Joffrey's version is on study. In this one the ballet is very good and to that we must add the excellent performance of the orchestra and the masterful direction of Gergiev that brings out all the sonorities of the work. Therefore the combination of Ballet + live orchestra is what enhances it.
I disagree on the point of ballet but man - Gergiev (despite his bs politics) is nothing short of other-worldy in Salzburg 2000 on the Firebird. You have to at least watch the last 7 minutes.
A ballet performed without the benefit of having seen it, going by scraps written in the Maestro's margins and the long lost choreography notes from Marie Rambert who was Nijinsky's assistant is going to be organic and authentic. There are only 2 companies to have that distinction: 1913 Ballet Russes and 1987 Joffrey. All who followed did not have to rely on the story/scenario. The Mariinsky did not stage this until 2008 and aside from the footage both Rome and Portugal had visited. And then they got Millicent and Kenneth for 5 months. To say that the Joffrey is lesser because it was on study is upside down. If you didn't know the story and you watched both videos (shitty quality aside) - you would understand it with the Joffrey but not the Mariinsky.
I feel like Daria is having too much fun with the role, as if she’s not really feeling any strain or weight when dancing the Chosen One. But that’s just my point of view I guess.
You know when I saw her I felt she was great compared to other Russians but then I saw some others in small clips (check out the channel for a Rio dancer) and I really think the Russian dancers just can't connect emotionally to something so purely Russian. Odd.
She has some nuances and I have seen the interview where she talks about this role and I dn't think she liked it

Some of the people are late and it’s distracting, love the music though
Dancing on this piece is extremely difficult. The tempo is constantly switching between signatures, accents are all over the place. If they were dancing in perfect coordination I think it would feel less authentic. This is a depicture of an ancestral pagan rite, imperfections make it more real in my eyes.

I love that music and I love what's happening on the stage you kind of have to see it live to get it: this five different groups on that stage and each one is doing something different so it's like five soloists as Millicent Hodson would call it. Spring Rounds though has a wonderful end to it ! 11:10 and the piece right before it has a lot of energy 6:40. It's perfect Stravinsky and Nijinsky's choreography was reflecting it. But the Marinsky fails to rise to the occasion. That's kind of why I think it falls apart here but you really should just watch the joffrey or I have a version of Rio de Janeiro from a balcony I'll give you the link.
No disrespect to Daria Pavlenko, but this interpretation of the Chosen One's choreography doesnt even come close to Beatriz Rodriguez's performance.

@@robertperez2262 I think there's 400 time signatures in the Rite! As to the saxophone I mentioned it because in 1913 people were perplexed that he was using an oboe. They quickly forgot about it once they saw Nijinsky's choreography... narrow-minded French bastards. I can't stand complimenting Gergiev anymore because of how far up Putin's ass he lives... but he conducts Stravinsky beautifully the Firebird more than this though.
