That liquor thing only applies to some states in the u.s., for example in Colorado you can't just buy liquor in a Walmart or on a corner store you have to go into an actual store but in Hawaii there's literally liquor everywhere like you can go into a gas station and there will be LOADS of liquor

I am not sure if it works different in Canada but I am pretty sure once you call in and they accept you being absent for the day, whatever you do is none of their business. It doesn't matter if you are sick and they see you at the club. They okayed your absence so what you are or are not doing with your absent day is not something that they should have written you up for. I feel like you could have just reported them for that.
