The D-50 was my first professional quality synthesizer and the first synth I ever bought with my own money. I was in college, making maybe $50 a week. I saved up and bought it. I still have it, and it still works.
This was my first synth. I got it when I started college in 1987 when I was 17. I still play it.Thank you so much for this video! I love this presentation. I can spot a D-50 sound a mile away. You have a new subscriber!
I bought a year’s subscription in 2019 and got two lifetime passes for free. I chose this one and the Juno-106. Haven’t used the Juno much but I love to just mess around on the D-50.
One of Roland's weird early sounds was "funny cat". This was on the SH-1000 from 1973 and the Juno 106 in 1984. Thankfully Eric killed off the silly sound era, it was pretty sad! The D50 was THE synth of the late 80s, it even got non keyboard players excited!
God bless you and Jesus loves you and I love you to my brother. Great show and you always bring back fond memories I'm 60 and I remember the good ole days. I use to go to Rogue NYC and buy all of my goodies from them used, Have a blessed night, and thanks again for sharing. Bro. Todd
Eric's story is similar to my publisher Mars story. He was an instrument ambassador and that got him into their circles. Funny, Eric was the invisible hand behind the top sounds of those days and he is now too! My publishers first name is Erik too....WTF.
This was the 2nd synth i ever played as a kid in the 80s after playing the Yamaha DX7 a year before.I was blown away by these 2 keyboards at the time. My 3rd was the Roland JD 800...can you feature that one too plz??
Awesome video, my man. I absolutely love hearing you go into detail about the history of classic software and gear. I could listen to it all day. Great channel.
You could do an episode about the famous DX-7. Love that thing even more than the D-50, but it's an acquired taste. But I do feel bad for anyone who had to deal with pop music when the only thing you heard on the radio was Electric Piano 1.
@@marvinbennett8384 Yeah I love the DX7. I think if you want "realistic instruments" the D50 might be better but I like the sounds the DX7 makes more. But for realistic instruments you cannot beat the M1.
Yooooo I love my d-50, my friends dad had one that never really got used and had all of the keys broken, I jus took it and have used it on like almost all my shit since! It’s an amazing synth, couldn’t do without it!
Tha D-50 also had one of the early 24bit DACs. On the keyboard version it was a little more aliasing noise ridden though. The rackmount D-550 had the better DAC. So keep that in mind if you're looking for that 80s digital Mojo ;) That being said, i LOVE the D-50. And i will never part from mine. There simply isn't any other Synthesizer that sounds like it. Similar maybe.. but still not close enough.
Nearly bought this! What made it sound unique was it’s LA (Linear Arithmetic) sound engine. It combined digital samples for the initial transient attack as you struck a note, with more traditional subtractive synthesis as you held them. So you could still shape the sounds, but they sounded very “real”!
Never heard this history of the Roland D-50. Thanks for presenting it. The Roland D-50 is a legend of sorts. Unfortunately, I probably will never own one but I do have it's boutique version, the D-05. Close enough for me. The problem with the D-50 is people forgot it was an actual synthesizer and if the presets were overused, you could always make more. The Yamaha DX7 had some of the same problem. People associated it to it's presets and ignored it's limitless possibilities. I wouldn't consider the D-50 workflow as simple. They made a whole separate plug in controller just to ease the process of creating/modifying D-50 patches. The boutique D-05 can also access that same controller.
I would very much love for you to do a video on the Korg electribe "ES-1" I have the mk2 myself. I'm still learning it but I think you would make a great video for it thank you✌
I recognized a horn patch from the D50 in the Eazy-E song "We Want Eazy". Surprised by it being used on Snoop Dogg "Gin & Juice" tbh. I assumed that was like JD-800 by then.
Chubb Rock re: Howie Tee "plug in the D50, get nifty" (Just the Two of Us) I used to see the ads for it in the electronic music magazines and wanted one so bad... Once I finally got the money a few years later I got an Ensoniq ASR10. My first real (not toy Casio) keyboard... which reminds me of another line from said song "he uses a casio keyboard and a Tascam board" LoL
There are certain keyboards, that I remember exactly where I was when I first heard them - the D-50 (holy crap, listen to that reverb!), the Jupiter 8 (the fattest analog), the Mirage (holy crap, a distorted guitar with feedback!), the JV-80 (with the pop expansion board, you've got every sound you need to do sequencing at home), the An1X (killing virtual analog), the DX-7 (the new digital world) and the M1 (holy crap, a workstation, and you can have an acoustic piano on a gig!).
This keyboard got sampled and released on the underground as the LA-50!! Eric Pershing reached out and they ceased and deceased. Amazingly, no one would put it back up to download out of respect also.
talkin about the bridge. theres an edit version of shans record, its like a mantronix style edit but way nicer than his stuff. its called something like blades over the river tobin or something like that. i couldnt even find out who did it. it was out on 7 inch for a brief time but it is worth tracking down. ill try and find the video and post it here.
I think alot of the historical context is missing. Roland created their first digital synth, scrambling to have an answer to the DX7. And they did beat it technically- and usability-wise. But... the D50 is a monotimbral performance keyboard and the korg M1 came and crushed it. The M1 was a workstation, not just a classic synth. The d50, like the dx7, has no sequencer or drums, and can't do more than one part. Roland had to answer to the M1 with the D20, which removed some synth power but added all of these.
Dyreck you are usually so comprehensive with your videos and because you normally review samplers you failed to mention what made the D-50 so Dope was it was Sample Based Roland a technology called PCM or AI technology which was a the Attack of a sampled instrument layered with a synthesized sustain to make it sound real before that companies would sample and loop the sample and have it fade which didn’t sound to natural when you started to pitch it. finnally sir what made Eric Persing so great is that they understood Midi implementation better than anyone in the world. They woule literally have every keyboard in the store linked and control whatever patch and feature midi offered.I so look forward to your videos bit you kinda missed the mark on this one. Also in Closing every company today still uses some variation of the technology that Roland created that produced the D50
Yeah I was thinking of mentioning them making the best out of the chips almost like what Roger Linn did with the linn drum. And your right the D-50 does have alot of cousins out there.
