While I could understand some complaints I think the Babaus behavior towards the end of the fight was pretty accurate 😂 I could see the Glabrezu forcing it into combat a bit sooner and even one round might’ve made the difference but I think it was well done
Fought in the open with everything against him and won. He would've had an easier time going to the slim corridors to force squeezing but didn't, he wanted revenge!
The Death Knight is very powerful, but going up against 3 demons means the action economy is against it for most of the fight. I think it's a pretty fair matchup when the Death Knight is played right. Good rematch!
I'm 50 an an unapologetic RPG enthusiast. I've made AD&D and Rolemaster campaigns for decades, so I've given a fair bit of thought to how to parameterize various monsters. And when I say this, I'm not accusing you of anything, you just made the scenario according to 5E, and I found it entertaining. Death Knights should be immune to stun, blind, kill; and be able to see in darkness. High end ones should have True Sight. They should have an aura of cold that does damage, or (higher end) slows, in a radius that increases with power level. This last should, at minimum, prevent 'heat metal', which is far beneath the dignity of anything claiming to be a Death Knight. I agree that 5E version should have more HP.
@@PokerJeezus D&D-wise, I prefer 3.5E...but honestly, Rolemaster is a way better system. I mean...memorization...really? Anyway you slice it, in any sort of well-developed campaign world, spellcasters are just... better than non spellcasting classes...the degree to which that is...equalized...should be a function of world-building, not of having a counter-intuitive magical system. Memorization introduces so many unnecessary plot elements, and IMO, the cumulative effect is egregious...
@Klyrunak - I like the idea that some spells are combat spells, some need casting elements, some do not. Some should be called Rites, which cannot be cast in combat, unless the mage is kept completely uninterrupted (maybe quiet is necessary). But without a doubt, 5E has destroyed the spellcasting system. The idea that 3rd level Fireball is the go to magic for mages able to cast 9th level spells is sickening. 4th level spells should be a minimum of twice the power of a 3rd and so on. And Dragons don't do more damage with spells? More range? 😢 In 2E there were rules of researching spells. It was a big game changer once that started. A 25th level typical mage, with four to five 9th level spells, should be something entire cities should fear. Kings would hire them actively. An 18 to 19 Int shouldn't be that common but among mages?!? That raises stakes.
I think you forgot to make a Concentration save far Darkness on the Glabrezu when the Death Knight used Staggering Smite (18+13=31, DC15 concentration save). Additionally, you upcast elemental weapon, but that uses one of the Death Knight's two 5th level slots (only upcasts on 5-6), and then he Destructive Wave'd twice (so, one more than he should have). As you say, the Glabrezu could have waited a round for Darkness, but at the same time may have missed some of its attacks against the Death Knight without advantage that the Heat Metal damage may not have made up for. The Babau advancing at the end there was a slight misplay, but also pretty in-character for it to see a chance to finish off the Death Knight and recklessly advance (also, the Glabrezu instructed it to). I always enjoy these videos! It's fun to pit creatures against each other to see who comes out on top, and it's a good analysis of both sides' combat prowess. It's understandable you forget some things; in session, you have players taking some of the pressure off of you to remember everything, and giving you time in-between turns to plan out what they will do. Also it's my experience that players will remind DMs about things they forget, like Concentration saves!
The Babau should have gone in earlier. It's attacks wouldn't be at disadvantage (death knight is blinded thus advantage; babau can't see thus disadvantage; result is straight roll). It could have then moved out of the death knights range each turn without taking an opportunity attack (opportunity attacks can only be used against a creature you can see).
@@TheHighestNoon This isn't necessarily ran as a wargame. If the Babau got in there, he could get splat by the death knight, so he prioritized staying in range to cast spells for the sake of self preservation.

This fight being so close feels like a better representation. Thanks for giving it a second go! I can still see how much of a threat the glabrezu is here as well.
A fight you could do is take a few humanoid stat blocks and put them up against a cyclops in a reenactment of Odysseus and his men fighting the Cyclops. A new iteration but higher level of guards maybe with a mixed team of guards, veterans and gladiator. Maybe even a bandit or bandit captain.
It varies person to person really, some people can come up with a living beautiful world and keep.up.with any change. Where some can't and it's no.slight on them
Honestly, mostly depends on your players. If they react to your plot hooks, engage in the role play, respect the story you've crafted for them it's a lot of fun. But if the only things they care about is loot and XP, you feel like creating the vast lore and complex NPCs for the campaign was a waste of time. Ultimately tabletop RPG is a co-op. Sure, 90% of the responsibility falls on the DM to create or adapt the story, balance it accordingly to the party's composition and players' experience, act out all the NPCs, etc. But it's up to the players to give that remaining 10% via their own effort (remembering their own character sheets, recognising NPCs they've interacted with, staying in-character) for the perfect mix.
Even when you fuck something up these are still great. Keep these coming there are literally unlimited options with all the mobs from all the various expansions and worlds.
Awesome rematch. Babau was fine but MIGHT have brought him in a round earlier when the glab was at like 1/3 just past 12min, but maybe his pride wouldn't let him do it!
Awesome rematch Esper! I hope no one was not giving you crap about the last match I doubt anyone was! I was personally just talking about the 5e spell of heat metal and there being no save for armor! I love these Monster Melee battles regardless of the outcome! is the darkness not a concentration spell? when he was hit There was no roll for seeing if he lost the darkness on the death knights first hit. but did on the second one. Totally wild fight!! I figured the Death knight was done for. There was little that the babau could do really since it has no dark sight.
He did use it, but pretty much every melee attack after the first round was in darkness, and the Death Knight can only parry an attack it can see coming.
In my opinion the typical stats suck. A Death Knight is not supposed to be a typical 10th level fighter. It should have a significant magical weapon, magical armor and some skills to match a necromantic warrior of undeath. It should be able to see in any darkness (plus blind fighting) and have an ability to summon undead warriors. It should have a ranged weapon also. It's a mage but it cannot cast a necromantic version of magic missile? That's crazy! Why can't it cast regular Fireball also? Lightning bolt? Most of all..... no Death Knight should be without its Nightmare steed. Ever!
If I were the Death Knight, with its presumably high intelligence, and at least general knowledge about demons and devils, I would've handled this battle smarter, and more tactically, by opening with its spells, then retreating to a spot that would allow it to both take advantage of its strong melee attacks and deny the ranged advantages of its foes (such as around a corner). I wouldn't have charged into the open like a reckless berserker, or a mindless monster. Basically, I would've played the Death Knight like how I would've played a player character, which I think would've worked towards the Death Knight's status as a potential BBEG for a campaign.
I would imagine that this is Lord Soth fighting his way in Ravenloft. Can you do a Death Knight + an undead minion vs a lich? Though a lich is more complicated, considering his legendary actions.
This Death Knight needs a promotion. He needs a name, a squad, and an upgrade. ❤ Where is his steed? ❤ What is his background story? Is he Italian? We could call him Lord Sauce. 😢 He needs a shield with a blade on it for an additional attack.
Battle idea: 4 or 5 humanoid NPCs ranging from CR 7 to 10 vs a lich and a few of his undead minions. Let's see if the world's NPCs truly need our help, or if they're just lazy.
If the death knight is grappled by the glabrezu, would he even be able to use his sword? I would think he would need the grappling/pummeling table or use a strength save to break free.
Yo Esper, great stuff ! l think we gotta get a rubber match for absolute control of the temple !!! But could you please give the Death Knight 3 javelins ? As far as a storyline, I would say the temple was the source of his corruption ( maybe slew an innocent or desecrated it somehow ) and he needs to slay the demons to cleanse the holy site and atone for his fell deeds.
The skeletal figure rises, ready to retake the temple he let get corupted by the foul demonic influences of the Abyss. He draws his sword, centuries of stewing in the evil blood infusing the once holy blade with flesh rotting power. This unholy energy melted the flesh from the once glorious paladin's flesh from its bones years ago, leaving a skeleton bent on revenge. It strikes at the abyssal fiends that invaded its once enlightened sanctuary. It unleashes an orb of energy, burning and wilting the three demons. Then the one with pinchers utters harsh words, and all is black. The knight, once a warior of Talos, unleashes what power it still has in a thunderous wave. The ape-like demon falls. It feels something grab it and hold it still. It must be that accursed pincher fiend. It blindly struggles against its foe, flailing blindly with its blade, its energy waning again. Then a whisper. A final gift granted to it by its god. With one last surge of power, thunder booms. Both demons fall. The skeletal knight stands there, the three corpses lay around it. The light of vengence dims in its hollow eyes. Its sword falls, released from limp fingers. It now is nothing more than a well made longsword. The figure falls to the ground with a rattle of bones and clanking of ancient armor, its final quest for Talos fulfilled.
Just have it send a wave of mook undead to distract them while it sets up for the orb, destructive wave, or just a good old fashioned beatdown. The fact they make undead near them resist turning practically shouts that they should have some undead minions with them. :) You could also give it slightly better minions, and have him charge the party while his wight sidekicks use their bows to pick off the wizards, healers, etc. Perhaps the most insidious would be to have him buried right under their campsite for the night, and initiate combat with a destructive wave from beneath them. lol
Knight: I am here to kill you! Glabrezu: Wait, didn't we slay you the other day? Knight: That was my twin brother, Death Knight. I am ... er ... Depth Knight! Glabrezu: Okay, okay. Let's rock. Knight: And if you somehow defeat me, my triplet brother, um, Deaf Knight will take up my sword!
Fantastic engagement, that DK pulled an undertaker on that Babau and almost incinerated it on its first action, no wonder it was cowering in a dark corner until asked to do something more 😂 Also, did the parry didn't work the last turns because of the grappling? Sorry but as much as i like D&D i have almost no occasion of playing it, so i'm a bit naive on the mechanics 😅

Sorry but as much as i like D&D i have almost no occasion of playing it, so i'm a bit naive on the mechanics 😅
The impulsiveness of the demons added to it. While yes, they should have worked more toegther, I think this is more fitting.
The Babou throwing the spear at the end should have had a chance to hit Glabrezu. Those Nat 1s should have at least meant the spear went at Glabrezu. Regardless, I enjoyed this and the previous Melee
Yes! At least a 10% chance possibility. 😂 He was only aiming at noise anyway.
When watching this I was thinking how this fight would have been in first edition I have a feeling The Death Knight wouldn't do so well
Hey if both sides can’t die in the mortal realm this can be an endless battle.
Undead joke of the day,,,,, what do you get when you cross a VAMPIRE and a baseball player?!? You get an UMPIRE!!!!! HAPPY HALLOWEEN 👻🎃👻
yeah round 2 for sure
Vecna vs Acererak!
What program/tool are you using?
Foundry VTT
I don't understand how that death knight has a normal sword. Doesn't make sense at that level.
That is my exact thoughts also. The fact that a cr 17 creature has to waste a bonus action to cast magic weapon is crazy.
Well that's to teach him not to break his oaths in the first place. It shouldn't be easy for him
True, it's supposed to be his most prized possession, almost a philactery.
@@nicka3697On the other hand, it's easy for him to just launch a ball of hellfire...
Elephants vs hobgoblins 😁
