    I work as a train engineer in Manitoba, and with the flooding going on around here this spring, I sure didn't need to see this - but I can't stop watching!
    Thank you to all section forces everywhere. You guys deserve all the recognition you can get.

  • @hogger01
    @hogger01 13 лет назад +4

    I hope CN recognizes you guys for being there and probably saving a train crew from serious injury or death and the millions of dollars it would have cost them. I'm a retired Engineer, I was lucky I never had to deal with a wash-out. I salute you MOW guys, thanks for keeping trains on the rails!

    Thank god the CN employees were investigating the high water levels in the area when this happened. I think the CN crew probably saved lives. Great job guys!!!

    This is my boyfriends crew, Tommy Miller. He noticed on his patrol that something wasnt quite right with the tracks, he had his crew get out and check the tracks. he let 3 trains go by and noticed that the sides had deep cracks and decided to stop the trains until he fully investigated the situation.

  • @NorthernChevron
    @NorthernChevron 13 лет назад +2

    Pure life saver right here, this could have been one hell of a disaster

  • @craizydragon
    @craizydragon 13 лет назад +1

    No sooner did he call to cancel ( thats the beeping you hear) and have chris start to take the video of the craks then the whole thing let go. you can see him and byron run to the trucks and move them farther up the rail to avoid being dumped as well. Tom then called an emergency stop to all trains. the washout was 142 ft long, 25 ft deep and 35 feet wide. no one was hurt because tom did his job right and maintianed public safety on the tracks.

  • @Aspire198

    Great catch! Rails remained electrically intact, so the signals would not have displayed red. When was the track opened?

  • @jmm2000
    @jmm2000 13 лет назад +1

    Wow, talk about wrong place, right time. With the footage, CN and other railroads can see for themselves what happens during flooding on rail lines.

  • @coldblue9mm

    I'd like to know one thing, if this wasn't a culvert failure as stated below, where did that water that is now rushing under the main and siding, going before the failure? It sure looks like a culvert failure to me, that led to saturating the subgrade and then came the failure. BUT, it's hard to tell from this video. Will someone who was there answer this question for me? Thanks! Oh, I'm rails also, but not the CP or CN...

  • @saintjohnrailfan
    @saintjohnrailfan 13 лет назад

    @samthegreencat47 From the story that I heard, this crew were suspicious of this section of track for washout possibilities, they radioed the RTC and told them to stop the trains in the area until the track was cleared of danger. The issue of stopping trains was already taken care of by a call to the RTC, so there was no danger of oncoming traffic.

  • @funnelfan
    @funnelfan 13 лет назад

    You guys suggesting that he should cross on the ties are nuts. Did you not notice that the one wood tie disappears when he was turned around. The concrete ties with spring clips might hold better, but I still wouldn't trust them!

  • @otef434
    @otef434 13 лет назад

    One last comment about safety. Depending upon where you work, crossing over a washout like that by walking on the ties is a rule violation, not to mention a high risk behavior.
    I would rather a fellow railroader take the safe course, and get home in the same condition as he left it in. Dumb decisions cost lives.

    @hitatortot1112 Heh. A C-5 Galaxy - the largest plane operated by the USAF - has a maximum payload of 135 tons. Your average main line train carries anywhere from 4000 to 18000 tons of cargo (not including the dead weight of the cars.) It would take a lot of planes to equate that...

    @dano132454 I know for a fact the company is strict and likes to keep it confidential... The video was pretty interesting to watch no doubt about that and I am a huge railfan myself that I have an interest to work for CN but you know the company will do what it takes to cover their ass because a washout makes them look bad.... I probably would have recorded it too but i would have never have posted it on youtube or anywhere online unless i had permission

  • @rampagerick
    @rampagerick 13 лет назад

    @saintjohnrailfan Things don't always work out this well. In July 2009 there was a fatal derailment near Rockford, IL. A patrol car happened to record the washout 20 minutes prior to the accident.
    Unfortunately, they couldn't contact dispatchers who were able to stop the train... The first 40 or so cars were empty or light, but 18 tanker cars derailed. They were carrying a mixture of 95% ethanol and 5% gasoline, and a dozen of them caught on fire.

  • @hoggerjeff
    @hoggerjeff 13 лет назад

    @coldblue9mm If you look carefully at the video, you will see the river that runs in a horseshoe on the right of the tracks. I'd guess that once the bank on that side was undercut by water and slid away, everything else to the left just followed. You can see trees waving on the left as the new river starts running right to left under where the tracks were.

  • @FightTheElite
    @FightTheElite 13 лет назад

    I didn't even see any water before it started to slide. This is truly one of the most puzzling things I've ever seen.
    I guess the soil underneath the tracks was already completely saturated with water?

    @hoggerjeff I'm always suspect anytime you have water against a fill. I've been around quite a few railroad washouts and this looks more like the fill liquidified, maybe in the thaw. At any rate, it's good that they stopped traffic before they put one in the ditch. What road are you off of?

    So I'm curious, how DID he get back to the hi-railer afterwards? Or did they send one from the other direction to pick him up/have the crew run around the washout on the nearest roads to get him? (I'm hoping he didn't have to *walk* to the nearest crossing, lol!)
