Lyrics for Hindi movies are written in Urdu by Muslim poets. Hindi and Urdu are somewhat similar languages but still there are differences.
You can't change the gender by the logic that its synonym in your language is different. I mean if someone wrote "thande hawayein lehrake aaye" instead of thandi, wouldn't it sound odd?

The amount of attention DDLJ gets is bizzare to me. I've can understand why it worked then, but it's aged poorely. And it's far far from being the best Bollywood romance, as some people wanna believe. The greatest romance of all time, in my humble opinion, is Veer Zaara. By the way, even Dil toh pagal hai is better than DDLJ.
