Paul McCartney has said that when he and John Lennon started The Beatles that they both always wished they could harmonize like the Everly Brothers who they felt had the best vocal harmonies ever recorded. Paul paid tribute to them when he included their names, (Phil and Don) in the song Let Em In by his other band called Wings, and he wrote a song for them that they recorded back in the 1980s. I read part of Graham Nash’s autobiography and he also said they were hugely influential on him and Allen Clark when they formed The Hollies. They actually met Phil and Don standing outside the local club where they were performing when the guys stepped out for a smoke after sound check and got to talk to them for ten or fifteen minutes. It was the highlight of their youth.
OMG! I was 8 years old when I first heard this. My older sister was completely in love with them. Another artist from that era you should listen to is Bobby Darrin. There are radio stations here in the U. S. that play these 'oldies'.

Yeah, if you listen to their studio recordings you'll notice the quality of their songs. Especially with your headphones on. They even sounded great with an old AM transister radio growing up in the late fifties and sixties. Love your reactions.

The Everly's got their start at the radio station KMA in Shenandoah Iowa about 20 mi from where I live. There is actually a street there named Everly Avenue in their honor. KMA is one of the oldest stations in the US and is still on the air.
And, of course, their saddest song, Ebony Eyes. You can't help but shed a tear when you listen to it. Several artists would sing these "tragedy" songs back in the day. Tell Laura I love her by Ray Peterson. Last Kiss by J. Frank Wilson.

It's one of my mum's favourite songs. I prefer 'In Dreams' by Roy Orbison, which is very similar in subject matter, but a completely different sound. 'Gems' is pronounced 'jems', with a soft g sound. Think of j for jewel, which is a gem. 👍
The guitars are signature model Gibson Everlys with the distinctive double pick guards. They are now popular collector instruments and quite valuable. There are many sweet ballads like this one from the 50's and 60's. Just skim the charts.
God this brings back alot of memories, I was 8 yrs old then but it's still clear in my head, I call them a crooner duo. They were one of the best groups of the day. They had a number of hits. Hi Marie. You talking about not hearing the music of those years today. Well, you go into just about any mall, grocery or large store in the United States you will hear music of that time period. Not necessarily of the 1950's but most play the music of some of the 1960's, but mostly the 70's and 80's. In the Southern United States where I live they do anyway.
I watched this performance on TV when I was eight years old. They still sound great. It was a joy to see you experience them for the first time. They had a lot of songs you would enjoy. Thanks!
Yes, their harmony is unique and instantly recognizable. I'd say the quality of their blend is partly because they're actual brothers and have some of the same genes, and partly because they grew up singing from the get-go. Their father, Ike Everly, was also a Country singer/guitarist. The arrangement of their harmonies is a separate component of the success. Many of their hit songs were written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant. A lot of the lyrics rhyme in the middle of phrases, as well as at the end. So that's high-quality stuff that many people would only notice on an unconscious level. And the arrangements (I don't know who decided on them) use a mix of Third and Fifth intervals, whereas a lot of song arrangements for duos pretty much use only Thirds. Many artists, even The Beatles, took note of that and tried to imitate it. They did some up-tempo stuff. Some songs (such as "Bird Dog") even have humorous lyrics. But I believe they were at their best when doing slow, sad love songs. My favorite is "Cryin' In the Rain" (written by Carole King and Howard Greenfield).
The Everly's were big in the 50's and early 60's. They had many great songs and hits. Their harmonies were unequaled. The Beatles were big fans of the Everly's. They loved their harmonies, and that is why many Beatles songs have beautiful harmonies too. Here in the US, as I'm sure in other parts of the world we have Sirius satellite radio which has stations dedicated to different decades of music. There is Ch5 for 50's music, Ch6 for 60's music, Ch7 for 70's music, and of course channel 18...The Beatles channel. So we can listen to all the oldies whenever we want. I have heard several people reacting to music that have made comments that today's music does not compare to the older music, and I'm inclined to agree. One more thing, I love that you have the Texas flag behind you. I'm here in San Antonio Texas, and I love my state! Best state in the union! Love you too. Keep up the great work.
It's not because you are in France that you don't hear this kind of music. It is just not done like this anymore - we are in an era for hard sounding and angry music (if you can call some of it that). I am so glad that you and so many other young people are using RUclips and other media to discover these lost treasures and maybe someone will revive this sound for future generations.

There are radio stations in the U.S. that specialize in older music (we call the songs "oldies," and the stations "oldies stations"). This is also true of music streaming services like Pandora. Most of the people who listen to these stations are old enough to have heard the songs when they first came out. Is there anything similar for French popular music? Marie, I think I'm beginning to understand your musical tastes. You love vocal harmony. May I suggest listening to The Beach Boys; Crosby, Stills and Nash; The Mamas and the Papas; and The Fifth Dimension. If you want to go really far back, listen to The Boswell Sisters, a vocal trio from the 1930s.
FYI, this is a live version, the recorded hit version is a bit faster with a bit more instrumentation. Oh, and it has better fidelity. In fact, it is quite good.
You are right it is a shame we don't have more music like this today, i grew up through the 60's 70's and 80's all good but so different but i think 50's and 60's were the best music
The "sweet spot" was a period of time I call "the Elvis era." Elvis' career ran from his first recording in 1954 through 1977. During that 23 years, we got A LOT of the best music ever produced.
I was born in 1953 and I remember this song being played a lot in the mid-60s, and early 70s. I didn't realize it was so old at that time. You took me back to my teen years with this song-- I remember this as one of the songs I listened to and sang along to, and I often put on a few records on my stereo, including this one, to help me drift off to sleep pleasantly. I agree, there is much amazingly wonderful music these days, but it is good also to remember gems (you prounounced it correctly) from the past . One of the ways for that to happen is for singers of today to cover these golden oldies and re-interpret them That is one of the great things about Angelina Jordan-- she is covering songs from even the 1920s and 30s and making them relevant for today. @@tcanfield I just listened to Bonnie Raitt's version and well, simply cannot agree that hers comes anywhere near to the original. Del Shannon's is a truly unique sounding record, not to mention his energetic vocal delivery. Bonnie Raitt's cover, while not a terrible track in itself, is very generic sounding and with it's pedestrian pacing, loses all the unique flavour and frenetic energy of Del Shannon's classic. Hey, opinions ay? We all have our own, but that's my personal preference.

Hi Marie, This is really interesting you found these guys They had great career and I believe one passed away in 2014. A couple of things. Many of there songs were made ino hits by other artist in later years . I think of songs like " love Hurts ( famous by Nazareth Z) "When will I be loved ( LInda Ronstadt ) .Song I never knew were written by them or written by them team. In their later career, they got into an argument and did not even speak or perform together for 10 years I guess ? I always thought that was interesting. So many of their songs went on to be hits by other artists. They are sort of unknow by the younger people today. They had over 20 number 1 hits i believe and many , many other artists made hits with their songs. They were a major source of songs and less is knows about them as this was back in the 50' thru the 70's when they were most famous. If you Google their songs. you will be surprised at how many you actually know.

I am so glad that you are discovering and loving these older songs. I had the great privilege of getting to see The Everly Brothers perform live in Dublin back in 1985. Even though by then they were older, middle aged men, they sounded as sharp and as sweet as they ever had. When siblings harmonise, you get a rare melding of sound that you don't get with people who are not related.
I was in High School, 10th-12th grade at the time this was popular in Iowa, USA. Tthey grew up in Waterloo, Iowa which is only an hour drive or maybe a bit more from where I still live. This brings back many memories of High School Dances usually held in the HS cafeteria from 7:00 or 8:00pm to 10:00 or 11:00pm. Some of us couldn't dance very well, others would take the spotlight on any stage! Thanks for sharing this reaction!
The music of today had lost the charm and depth of music in the 50's and 60's. In those days, music was more honest, more simple...not like today where you have to sit and try to decipher what the lyrics mean and everyone comes up with their own interpretation of the meaning. We've lost the charm, the innocence of a true love song. I would much rather listen to a song that laid the lyrics out clearly than try to figure out what a singer was trying to say with cryptic lyrics. No matter what, there is not one love song today that is as honest as a song from that era. I'm 64 years old and music has been a major part of my life since I was knee high to a stack of 45's (records), and I can honestly say that there are no greater love songs, and songs in general, for that matter, that could ever take the place of the music of those days.

The Everly Brothers were the first rock group to sign a recording contract for one million dollars. They left their manager of that time who in turn cut them off from his writers who had written all of their hits up to then. So they left Nashville and moved to LA with a new contract and no new songs. They wrote a song called Cathy's Clown. It went to #1 and is my favorite Everly Bros. song.
The first time you heard this you should have been with that special someone with the lights low and just spend dancing. By the way 58 wasn't that long ago that was the year I was born!
Phil is on the left as you look at them and Don on the right. The video is from 1960 and is a television appearance during their first tour of the UK. The 3 musicians in the picture backing the Everlys are a famous 50s pop group in their own right called The Crickets. Their most famous member had been Buddy Holly who, unfortunately, died in 1959. The Crickets seen in the video are, from the left, Joe B Mauldin, Jerry Allison (on drums) and Sonny Curtis. Also look how neatly pop singers dressed in those days - sharp suits and ties. Sonny Curtis wrote one of the Everlys' most famous hits of the 60s called Walk Right Back.

In listening to your comments about not knowing anything about many of the popular singers of the 50's and 60's I offer my humble opinion. The music of this era is now 55-65 years old. People who are in positions of higher management of radio systems are also now too young to remember these songs. And general music tastes have changed over the years. There used to be a variety of radio stations in the USA that specialized in what was called "Oldies." Now they are all gone, except for Sirius Radio. If it wasn't for RUclips and its huge audience, many of these songs would fade into oblivion. All we could do is play our recordings and listen as individuals. In the U.S. we have several television stations that play select era's of music strictly for 50's and 60's...another station will play country music, or big band era music, whatever you want to listen to. Otherwise you dial up RUclips for your oldies!

Not mainstream? Well, just one of their hits sold 8 million copies and they were the inspiration for so many of the huge groups of the 60s.

It's one of my mum's favourite songs. I prefer 'In Dreams' by Roy Orbison, which is very similar in subject matter, but a completely different sound.
'Gems' is pronounced 'jems', with a soft g sound. Think of j for jewel, which is a gem. 👍

God this brings back alot of memories, I was 8 yrs old then but it's still clear in my head, I call them a crooner duo. They were one of the best groups of the day. They had a number of hits. Even yrs after this release they were played alot on the radio. Used to listen with girlfriend (wife now) at Drive Ins or just cruising. Thx FT :)

They began performing on their father's radio program when they were very little. The family is from Kentucky, so they started with country music. They were famous for early rock and roll, but I would suggest their country song, "Lightening Express".

Hi Marie. You talking about not hearing the music of those years today. Well, you go into just about any mall, grocery or large store in the United States you will hear music of that time period. Not necessarily of the 1950's but most play the music of some of the 1960's, but mostly the 70's and 80's. In the Southern United States where I live they do anyway.
I watched this performance on TV when I was eight years old. They still sound great. It was a joy to see you experience them for the first time. They had a lot of songs you would enjoy. Thanks!

Yes, their harmony is unique and instantly recognizable. I'd say the quality of their blend is partly because they're actual brothers and have some of the same genes, and partly because they grew up singing from the get-go. Their father, Ike Everly, was also a Country singer/guitarist.
The arrangement of their harmonies is a separate component of the success. Many of their hit songs were written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant. A lot of the lyrics rhyme in the middle of phrases, as well as at the end. So that's high-quality stuff that many people would only notice on an unconscious level. And the arrangements (I don't know who decided on them) use a mix of Third and Fifth intervals, whereas a lot of song arrangements for duos pretty much use only Thirds. Many artists, even The Beatles, took note of that and tried to imitate it.
They did some up-tempo stuff. Some songs (such as "Bird Dog") even have humorous lyrics. But I believe they were at their best when doing slow, sad love songs. My favorite is "Cryin' In the Rain" (written by Carole King and Howard Greenfield).

The Everly's were big in the 50's and early 60's. They had many great songs and hits. Their harmonies were unequaled. The Beatles were big fans of the Everly's. They loved their harmonies, and that is why many Beatles songs have beautiful harmonies too. Here in the US, as I'm sure in other parts of the world we have Sirius satellite radio which has stations dedicated to different decades of music. There is Ch5 for 50's music, Ch6 for 60's music, Ch7 for 70's music, and of course channel 18...The Beatles channel. So we can listen to all the oldies whenever we want. I have heard several people reacting to music that have made comments that today's music does not compare to the older music, and I'm inclined to agree. One more thing, I love that you have the Texas flag behind you. I'm here in San Antonio Texas, and I love my state! Best state in the union! Love you too. Keep up the great work.

One of the most popular groups in the late '50s. Bye the way, they do play 50's music on a few oldies radio stations. That's what I listen to.
It's not because you are in France that you don't hear this kind of music. It is just not done like this anymore - we are in an era for hard sounding and angry music (if you can call some of it that). I am so glad that you and so many other young people are using RUclips and other media to discover these lost treasures and maybe someone will revive this sound for future generations.

Marie, I think I'm beginning to understand your musical tastes. You love vocal harmony. May I suggest listening to The Beach Boys; Crosby, Stills and Nash; The Mamas and the Papas; and The Fifth Dimension. If you want to go really far back, listen to The Boswell Sisters, a vocal trio from the 1930s.

The "sweet spot" was a period of time I call "the Elvis era." Elvis' career ran from his first recording in 1954 through 1977. During that 23 years, we got A LOT of the best music ever produced.
I was born in 1953 and I remember this song being played a lot in the mid-60s, and early 70s. I didn't realize it was so old at that time. You took me back to my teen years with this song-- I remember this as one of the songs I listened to and sang along to, and I often put on a few records on my stereo, including this one, to help me drift off to sleep pleasantly. I agree, there is much amazingly wonderful music these days, but it is good also to remember gems (you prounounced it correctly) from the past . One of the ways for that to happen is for singers of today to cover these golden oldies and re-interpret them That is one of the great things about Angelina Jordan-- she is covering songs from even the 1920s and 30s and making them relevant for today. @@tcanfield I just listened to Bonnie Raitt's version and well, simply cannot agree that hers comes anywhere near to the original. Del Shannon's is a truly unique sounding record, not to mention his energetic vocal delivery.
Bonnie Raitt's cover, while not a terrible track in itself, is very generic sounding and with it's pedestrian pacing, loses all the unique flavour and frenetic energy of Del Shannon's classic.

Hi Marie, This is really interesting you found these guys They had great career and I believe one passed away in 2014. A couple of things. Many of there songs were made ino hits by other artist in later years . I think of songs like " love Hurts ( famous by Nazareth Z) "When will I be loved ( LInda Ronstadt ) .Song I never knew were written by them or written by them team. In their later career, they got into an argument and did not even speak or perform together for 10 years I guess ? I always thought that was interesting. So many of their songs went on to be hits by other artists. They are sort of unknow by the younger people today. They had over 20 number 1 hits i believe and many , many other artists made hits with their songs. They were a major source of songs and less is knows about them as this was back in the 50' thru the 70's when they were most famous. If you Google their songs. you will be surprised at how many you actually know.

I am so glad that you are discovering and loving these older songs. I had the great privilege of getting to see The Everly Brothers perform live in Dublin back in 1985. Even though by then they were older, middle aged men, they sounded as sharp and as sweet as they ever had.
When siblings harmonise, you get a rare melding of sound that you don't get with people who are not related.
I was in High School, 10th-12th grade at the time this was popular in Iowa, USA. Tthey grew up in Waterloo, Iowa which is only an hour drive or maybe a bit more from where I still live. This brings back many memories of High School Dances usually held in the HS cafeteria from 7:00 or 8:00pm to 10:00 or 11:00pm. Some of us couldn't dance very well, others would take the spotlight on any stage! Thanks for sharing this reaction!

The music of today had lost the charm and depth of music in the 50's and 60's. In those days, music was more honest, more simple...not like today where you have to sit and try to decipher what the lyrics mean and everyone comes up with their own interpretation of the meaning. We've lost the charm, the innocence of a true love song. I would much rather listen to a song that laid the lyrics out clearly than try to figure out what a singer was trying to say with cryptic lyrics. No matter what, there is not one love song today that is as honest as a song from that era. I'm 64 years old and music has been a major part of my life since I was knee high to a stack of 45's (records), and I can honestly say that there are no greater love songs, and songs in general, for that matter, that could ever take the place of the music of those days.

A timeless classic!
The Everly Brothers were the first rock group to sign a recording contract for one million dollars. They left their manager of that time who in turn cut them off from his writers who had written all of their hits up to then. So they left Nashville and moved to LA with a new contract and no new songs. They wrote a song called Cathy's Clown. It went to #1 and is my favorite Everly Bros. song.

Phil is on the left as you look at them and Don on the right. The video is from 1960 and is a television appearance during their first tour of the UK. The 3 musicians in the picture backing the Everlys are a famous 50s pop group in their own right called The Crickets. Their most famous member had been Buddy Holly who, unfortunately, died in 1959. The Crickets seen in the video are, from the left, Joe B Mauldin, Jerry Allison (on drums) and Sonny Curtis. Also look how neatly pop singers dressed in those days - sharp suits and ties. Sonny Curtis wrote one of the Everlys' most famous hits of the 60s called Walk Right Back.
There are radio stations in the US that play only "Oldies" usually from the 60's and 70's but some slip in songs from the 50's also. ...
I completely understand your style of music, because I love the same style. The Everly Brothers are actually my favorite artist of all time. I’m only 13, and I absolutely adore them. I’m so glad I’m not the only young one in our generation who likes oldies/the everlys. (and they are handsome!)
In listening to your comments about not knowing anything about many of the popular singers of the 50's and 60's I offer my humble opinion. The music of this era is now 55-65 years old. People who are in positions of higher management of radio systems are also now too young to remember these songs. And general music tastes have changed over the years. There used to be a variety of radio stations in the USA that specialized in what was called "Oldies." Now they are all gone, except for Sirius Radio. If it wasn't for RUclips and its huge audience, many of these songs would fade into oblivion. All we could do is play our recordings and listen as individuals. In the U.S. we have several television stations that play select era's of music strictly for 50's and 60's...another station will play country music, or big band era music, whatever you want to listen to. Otherwise you dial up RUclips for your oldies!

Hi, Marie, hope you're keeping safe and well. The Everly Brothers influenced many well known artists. My all time favourite artist is Paul Simon (Simon and Garfunkel) who was influenced by them and did a cover of Bye Bye Love on the album Bridge Over Troubled Water.
Finally our generation starts discovering the music of the Everly Brothers. I relly like the style of your video, the fact that you were talking a bit about background information and your own experience with (non existing) airplay on the radio stations you listen to. If you decide to do another reaction, I´d love to see you react to "Wings of a Nightingale", live on the Des O´Connor show in 1984, their comeback song after a 10 year pause.
