Ruby didn't have a choice but to pretend that her trauma from Volume 3 which to her was almost 3 years ago wasn't getting to her so that people who worry about her for the right reasons (unlike her teammates) wouldn't hold her back and keep from making effective progress of saving as many lives as she has. Though, I did find this post on Reddit that said Weiss might become Ruby's guardian angel in the next volume, go there and type "I believe I know what role Weiss would play in Volume 10, the events of RWBY Volume 9 could hint that the bond between Ruby and Weiss would greatly deepen cause Weiss might become a guardian angel for Ruby who is now a slowly maturing god from the Ever After.

Ruby still felt odd in the most recent volume. A big "boo hoo for me" sort of thing going on.... Yang lost something vital to a person, Blake had to kill a former lover and abandon groups of people she had dedicated years of her life with... Weiss had to give up years of trauma and high expectations, plus some extra stuff without spoiling, and Ruby.... Had stuff. I still can't think of what caused Ruby to really get pushed to the point of a breakdown. All the others had the same or similar emotional situations, and then you got Jaune who lost someone incredibly dear to him, slapped to another dimension, and hadn't seen another real human in decades after failing to save more of his friends.
Thanks for commenting, but I have to disagree. I don't think just some stuff happened to her. It's just that it had never been highlighted because, in my opinion, Ruby hides her negative emotions to give hope to others. And, I also think she has a similar way of thinking to you in the sense, that whatever happened to her didn't happen to her but to others, or that she wasn't as close to those people as others (pyrrha for example). And so she invalidates her own emotions. Here is a list of what happened to her: She lost her mom when she was young, less than 5, and probably hid her feelings about that; if we listen to Red Likes Roses pt2 and what Yang said to Blake in Vol 2 Ep 6, “Ruby was really torn up, but I think she was still too young to really get what’s going on”. Then Beacon fell, and the death of Penny and Pyrrha, she tried to save them, but she wasn’t fast enough; she only saw their last breath. She also saw Roman dies. She regretted leaving Yang, and she lost her team in a way. During the journey with JNR, Ruby is almost captured by Tyrian. Qrow was poisoned “because” of her, and she regrets dragging JNR with her because of the danger. At Heaven, she was scared that Cinder would kill Jaune as she did for Pyrrha; Ruby couldn’t do anything to help her friends and Weiss, who was impaled because she was unconscious most of the fight. Then they learned the truth about Salem and Ozpin; she had to support all her team, plus Qrow and Oscar, to not give up and die inside a farm where she probably had a nightmare. At Atlas, everyone puts pressure on her by saying they’ll follow her lead. When it was okay, she saw Tyrian kill many people, and she couldn’t do anything again. In some way, Salem tells her that she killed her mother, and they have to “betray” Ironwood. Yang reproaches Ruby that her plan failed, then “because” of her plan, Nora is injured, and Penny loses a sword. Later they fight the hound, and they find out that there is a silver-eyed warrior in it. Meaning that her mom could be one and that if Tyrian wanted to capture her was because Salem probably wished to transform her into one, meaning that she could become a monster and try to kill her friends. Penny asked her to kill her because of the virus Arthur Watts put in her, thanks to the sword she lost sooner. Yang fell because she protected her, and Blake also fell, trying to save her. They fell “because” of her. Then she learned that Penny had died again. She can’t help her team because she lost Crescent Rose. She doesn’t know who she is anymore. She gives up her emblem (she regrets it instantly if you look at her posture and expression). Then she learned that Jaune too fell, and now he’s old. She leads a war against an immortal witch. All of this is because her plan failed. Jaune blamed her, on impulsiveness, saying that the plan failed when it was everyone's plan. Even if he doesn't think it, it will still haunt her. Then she was tortured physically and mentally to death by dead persons she loved, trusted, or admired. She saw Little die, right in front of her, confirming her way of thinking that everyone dies around her/ because of her. And the image she had of her mom was just a lie.
now you have me thinking that what if Qrow, who taught Ruby, thinks she takes too much after him? or what if Ruby thinks that Qrow thinks that. only deepening that pit she found herself in? also out of the entire cast of huntsman and huntresses, the only person younger than Ruby is Oscar. Ruby is barely an adult as of volume 9 iirc. She has been forced to mature faster than her friends and family.
Would you like a list I can give you one seems people like to forget volume three happened not to even mention the other shit she's been through. So lets go over it she lost her mother early, she loses Penny twice,she was forced to watch as Pyrrha was killed and unable to do anything to stop it,her decisions have caused her team no end of horrible situations and she feels guilty for that, she nearly got her favorite Uncle killed because she tried to do something she was clearly not ready for, Salem has won time and time again and she keeps blaming herself as she's the leader(Despite everything being Ozpin and the gods fault if what i have read from the lore is correct I sort of dropped RWBY for a while because sidelined some of my favorite characters and it seems to have gone down hill,Not to mentioned what I have read about Ironwood who didn't seem like a Danzo type to me so that was a major turn off)
In short, Ruby basically pulled a Steven. Hiding and burying their negative emotions for everyone's sakes except for theirs and basically bottling it all up and letting the weight the weight and responsibilities of everyone on their shoulders pile up more and more until they blow up in the most agonizing and explosive way imaginable. Not to mention no one really noticed it and the moment they do, it was a little to late to even do anything.
