Was looking for a review on the arcteryx alpha parka. There is exceedingly little information about it out there, and I don't just mean specs. Would be awesome if you guys did a video on it!
I'm not really a walker but I am a sports photographer and have to endure the best of our British weather. I bought a Rab Valiance as l needed both warmth and something waterproof. Great content.
As I just relplaced 2 jackets this year I know benefits/comprompises/price/fit all play a part. For me: Late fall is an Arcteryx Cerium sv, winter Fjallraven exp lite. Other things to consider: outer D rating, pockets, cut, wrist opening, and zippers. Thanks for the tips.
What does the under armour limitless verbiage mean? I am interested in their black vest. I work in retail in the frozen food department so I need a loose fit vest in black. Thank you
Wow! Nice Looking Jackets! Lot of love and great respect for your great work from a solo mountain hiker friend from the Lower Chitral District of Pakistan.
If you want some really warm jackets for extremely cold weather then you can't forget about western mountaineering and feathered friends. Both very reputable companies with exceptional quality at a premium price.
And what about a Mountain Hardwear "Absolute Zero" or a Fjallraven "Expedition down parka no. 1" or even an Arcteryx "Cold WX parka SVX"? These all outperform the well-known Canada Goose Expedition - because that one is WAY too wide for most people here in Europe.
Is this a review of "British-available" hooded does jackets?? My choice for mountain west, USA skiing (ordered it today) is the new-for-this-year LL Bean men's Wind Challenger Stretch Down Jacket. made with 80% recycled nylon & 14% Spandex body & sleevesand 100% recycled nylon on helmet compatible hood and shoulder yoke. It has NO sewn-thru seams. Instead it has WOVEN-IN baffles. Thus the "Wind Challenger" name. LOVE this feature. $261.75 on sale. So OK, it has 650 fill down, not 800 fill as my other down garments. But I ain't packing it in when winter camping so stuff size and weigh are not a problem. This remarkable design has every element I have been looking for.
Living in the uk, what North Face down number would suit the coldest uk winters? Personally I think uk winters are getting milder so would a 550 be ok and would a 800 be too much? How about a 700 or 750?
It also depends on the amount of down insulation. For example a 600 fill with more down will ultimately be far warmer than an 800 fill with less down. Also goose down is finer than 🦆 duck down. Another huge criteria is durability, as many jackets now employ ultralight weight fabrics that unfortunately tend to be fragile and cannot withstand heavy use. Personally I am prepared to carry that slightly heavier jacket that has strong and durable fabrics and zips.
Down fill power is part of the warmth of a jacket. The total warmth of a jacket is determined by fill power x fill weight. Fill power on its own doesn’t tell you much about a jacket. Imho, 750 to 850 is great quality down and will serve most purposes.
Sorry but how can this be a test of the Best Down Jackets from 2024.. when the test was filmed in March of 2022? Can you also tell the numbers of the lottery two years ahead? 🙏
Not tried it but Montane is a good brand and the jacket looks good on paper: water resistant down, box wall baffles, and good Pertex fabrics. The down spec could be a little better - 800 fill power is OK but not great. Hope that helps. Will
I'm interested in Down Jacket (that I can compress into my backpack) Solo) when I have set up camp on a Scottish mountain in severe winter conditions. What would you advize?
I need a down lite jacket with hood attached, so I searched the offers in Romania and there are only two suggestion for me, one is Columbia Delta Ridge Down Hooded jacket and there is also Jack Wolfskin Helium or Fairmont jackets. Since the winter weather here is changing from snow to rain, I'm curios which is the best protection to the water also, both been water repellent, any ideas? Thanks
NONE of the jackets proposed here is waterproof. If you can accept a fixed hood (why?? It is VERY uncomfortable if you do NOT wear the hood...) then a Rab Valiance comes to my mind. But I would take a Nobis Cartel ANYTIME over the suggested Rab, as this jacket has a comfortable collar and a removable hood!
I wore Jack Wolfskin Helium for 3 consecutive winters in Romania. It is a great and comfy jacket, looks good but not very warm if the wind blows and there are minus degrees.
I just wear jackets casually and when i go hiking in winter, i’ve had a few over the years. The only downside is the jackets can easily be damaged so one must be careful.
Hey - thanks for the video. Really helpful reviews. However a few of these are out of my budget sadly! Do you have a down jacket recommendation that is perhaps £200 ish at the most please? I’m not a serious hiker or anything like that, but I just like to have a decent one for those v cold winter days. Thank you.
Hi. Webtogs have a bunch of good value options at the moment. I'd also take a look at the Alpkit website - they're good for quality kit at decent prices. Cimalp worth looking into too. Will
And I seriously miss Nobis! Absolutely gorgeous jackets that combine real life usability (as waterproof!) with super stylish exterior materials. These look the part! My fav is the Cartel jacket.
What parka would I need, if I just want the warmest there is, but I don't want it to look like the offspring of the Mr. Michelin-man and a trashbag? I was looking at something like the Canada Goose Snow Mantra, but it's a bit pricey - and not very nice-looking.
Hi Jon. It's made it into our Top 5 in the past and is a good jacket that has rated well on our pages. We try to find a good balance in our top 5 between warmth ratings and price and it was just edged out in this instance. Will
Exactly... I just mentioned this one to someone asking about that. Unfortunately, still with "fixed hood no collar" construction... give me a Nobis Cartel anytime over this Rab.
You know what? I'm seriously disappointed by this list. ANY down jacket sporting the now so often seen "fixed hood no collar" construction can be immediately written OFF my list. If you zip it up completely (which I ALWAYS do) without the hood on your head, that hood start to pull back, pulling the zipper to your throat - a VERY nasty feeling!! And... to be truly versatile, any down jacket should be WATERPROOF, and by that I mean really waterproof, with some kind of membrane in it. THAT will shift the maintream jackets from the truly, universally usable ones. The Arcteryx Camosun, the Patagonia Wanaka, the The North Face McMurdo, ANY Nobis down jacket or down parka(!) will do as they are ALL waterproof, and even the Dutch brand Gaastra came up with some really nice down jackets having a removable hood, a collar and some kind of waterproof fabric, not so strange, as their origin lies in sailing jackets. So, there you have it: 5 brands that make REALLY universally usable ones - and even with great comfort, as they ALL have a nice collar, and adaptable too, as the hood is removable.
Moncler is the best and perhaps the original. I love mine and I live pretty far north. Latitude 53. Here is a quote from Wikipedia: In 1954, Moncler quilted jackets were chosen to equip the Italian expedition to K2, which culminated with the conquest of the earth's second-highest summit by Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli.[13][14] Moncler also accompanied the French expedition which reached the summit of Makalu in 1955[15] and was the official supplier for expeditions in Alaska organised by Lionel Terray in 1964.[16] On occasion of the Grenoble Winter Olympics in 1968,[17][18] Moncler became the official supplier of the French national downhill skiing team.[17] In 1968, a cartoon duck named MonDuck was introduced as a mascot for the fashion house.[19
As a real Moncler fan (I must have 5 or 6, from the standard Maya to the extrrrremely nice "Rillieux parka" and even a down filled leather jacket) I must say: they are NOT the "best" down jackets. Until recently, NONE of these were waterproof. Last year, they finally, seriously, offered a down jacket with Gore Tex! I saw that one in the Danish Moncler store in Copenhagen. Unfortunately, the model was absolutely unsuitable for my build, otherwise I would have bought it. Jackets that are more versatile (as they are waterproof) are for example the Nobis Cartel and the The North Face McMurdo parka. These both really do a good job...
The Sub Zero is no longer made. The equivalent would be the Absolute Zero, which is more for expedition use. Within this grouping, I would suggest the Phantom. The Nilas could also be considered if you need more warmth.
This is completely inaccurate. You need to do more research about current best jackets. And stop using the word "best", hands off that word. I have two best jackets in the world right now, both of which you do not have in your video and do not deserve to know what they are. Unless you pay me!

@@monzarace why the hell not !? The number one is the The North Face AMK Cloud L6 parka, 1000 down fill.
