I think the sewer king still has an important lesson behind it. That not everyone can be redeemed or "saved". Although rare there are genuinely terrible and dangerous people out there. And that's important for kids to be aware of. Sort of like stranger danger.

Excellent point! Getting strong "Gollum" vibes, this closely resembles and must have inspired this character- living underground in dark solitude, obsessing over a prize item and wasting away over it, going insane when it is taken away. When reading the Hobbit, (before the movie came out), this fascinated me as one of the most chilling and tragic existences imaginable.

I think Sewer King teaches the lesson that terrible people often live very sad, miserable lives, and something that meant SO much to him (i.e. the watch) was meaningless to Arnold's grandpa. In the end, the Sewer King thought that he had won, but in reality, he didn't gain anything that Arnold's grandpa didn't already have, and his obsession with something so worthless proved how pathetic of a person he is. There are a *lot* of people out there like that.

The “Wheezin’ Ed” episode always scared me the most, especially the ending where you hear his raspy cackle coming from the caves entrance confirming he still haunts the place. There were so many clever and suspenseful episodes of Hey Arnold that a lot of kids shows didn’t always have. Thanks for the nostalgic revisit!

I think you missed the point on the sewer guy. He serves as an important lesson to kids, still. Not everyone can be changed through empathy and you won't always win. It's realistic, even if you consider the whole living in sewers situation. People actually live in sewers you know.

The Zeke the Plumber episode of Salute Your Shorts always scared me. As kids we'd rather die than have our secrets be revealed and be humiliated in front of everyone we know. In that sense it has the viewer use their own imagination to think "What would my encounter with Zeke be like? What would the people around me think of me after he tells them my secrets?" It's the kind of horror that is made scarier by the viewer than the creator could ever accomplish.

I am truly grateful for this show, and for the people who made it. And to Craig Bartlet, the creator of the show, my sincerest gratitude for showing the world that despite how bad things (and people) may be at times, there is always an Arnold out there willing to make a difference. Thank you for being that "Arnold", Mr. Bartlet; it means more to me than words can describe.

The "fake news story" thing actually happened here in Ireland. Me and my father were visiting his mother's house, and a news broadcast came on saying that a nuclear power planet in the UK had a meltdown and that we had to stay inside because we were in the affected area. We were really scared, and then at the end, it said it was just an imagined scenario of what the broadcast would be like if it really happened.

I always thought Sewer King got the watch back because it was the only thing he had of actual value. In the end, he is left with no company (again), no friends, king of the shittiest kingdom ever, and the only thing he actually wanted was more meaningful to him than for Grandpa (who turns out had a lot of them). So it was like, a watch can be just another watch or it could mean the world to an isolated dispossessed man whose coping mechanism to deal with loneliness and isolation by pretending to be a king hahah
Loved the video btw! Arnold was my fav show growing up (I still watch a few episodes when I can fall asleep ☺️).

Bartletts attention to detail is something else. Grandpas packard is extremely detailed for being a cartoon, engine 25 is based off a real life Norfolk and Western locomotive. Even the city itself. The city is a fictional city in Washington but Bartlett said it’s based on Brooklyn NY and coming from someone who worked in Brooklyn he absolutely nailed it. Everything from the brownstone homes to the cobblestone roads by the parks.

Phoebe was a smart girl. She wouldn't have used a well known poem. Unless you were a huge Emily Dickenson fan you most likely wouldn't know every single poem in her archive. Not to mention this takes place 20 years ago when you'd have go and read every Emily Dickenson book to verify it was copied. You couldn't just Google a line and find out if it's out there.
It makes much more sense when you remember this was in the 90s.

Craig of the Creek (which is very similar in tone to Hey Arnold) has several episodes that hew to the categories outlined in this video. Hyde & Zeke, The Legend of the Library, Creature Feature, Trick or Creek, The Haunted Dollhouse, Doorway to Helen, and any episode involving the witches of the creek are all episodes with scary elements that are either a. scary from a kid's point of view, b. scary just for fun, or c. involve spooky urban legends.

Came for the content and was pleasantly surprised by the background music!

So nice to see a creepy Hey Arnold list including Monkey Business and Phoebe Cheats.

My favorite may be the aliens episode and the ghost bride. This goes directly to my All About Hey Arnold playlist. Thanks.

Wow, your first Hey Arnold essay has over 200k views now! I remember when it had like 400 and immediately subscribed to your channel. It's cool of you to revisit this special show. Thank you for your work, may your channel grow even bigger :)
