Maybe a tough place, but I learnt my trade there and it stood me in good stead my whole life...I'm 68 now, got beat up at Billy Mannings fun fair when I was 17 by a bunch of cowards, got my own back later outside an Indian restaurant and arrested for it!...great days indeed!!
"Most of the city of Portsmouth lies on Portsea Island, located where the Solent joins the English Channel. This makes Portsmouth the United Kingdom's only island city "
I live in Portsmouth but I never see stuff like this and I don't find it tough to live :P Though some people can have attitudes I wouldn't count it as tough. I get on well
I once had to get on the overland after a chelsea v. arsenal game by myself, my first time travelling london alone and arsenal lost. It was fucking terrifying.
I wish people were as passionate about the shit the governments all around the world does to the poor, homeless, ex war vets, etc. Things would change quickly, but over a football game? Bunch of ludicrous bullshit.
+Kevin Carpenter Mainly middle/upper class people watch Rugby Union and it doesn't have the same kind of organised violence associated with it. Rugby League has the occasional incident, but that's played almost exclusively in the north of England and is a working class game. There are supporters of teams that absolutely detest each other, like Portsmouth and Southampton, because it's a local rivalry and there's lots of reasons up and down the country why these have developed over many years. Some of them are purely down to football, some are to do with previous fights between rival groups and some of these rivalries have nothing at all to do with football or fighting. For instance it's been said that the massive rivalry between Manchester and Liverpool stems from Manchester building a ship canal and taking work on the docks away from their neighbours on the coast. You have to realise that there's a massive adrenaline rush when someone gets involved with violence and that's a big reason why people do it. It's not unknown for people who have been attempting to kick the shit out of each other one week will meet up and go for a drink with the same people a few weeks later. So there's not some innate hatred that's ever present , It's really like a game in itself with its own 'codes of conduct' etc. People/teams do hate each other with a passion but that isn't the only reason people do it. If you're trying to understand it, it's better to compare it to an extreme sport like jumping off tall buildings, it seems ridiculously dangerous to people on the outside with zero attraction, but those involved keep doing it despite the obvious risks. Then apart from the psychological buzz, you've also got to consider that people who are good at it gain reputations and respect from others they do it with and against and the wider community. People make life long friends because of saving someone's skin, fighting side by side with someone and not retreating despite the odds being against them etc, I expect much like the friendships people form who have served in the armed forces together. All kinds of people were [are] involved, from all kinds of backgrounds. The media would have people believe it's all stupid half-wits that do it, but that really isn't the case. There's a wide, cross section of people from all walks of life that are involved in it.
You really don't understand the culture well enough to form an accurate impression if you think there's even the smallest chance of it happening at an English match these days. You have absolutely nothing to fear, it's almost entirely died out and you can visit any club in the country without witnessing any violence even if you support the visiting team. There's far more of a risk of violence just visiting a town centre on a Friday night for a drink. It was a subculture and those who participated only ever wanted to fight with the opposition, 'normal' fans were left well alone. What we are presently witnessing in France is people thinking they are hooligans, they are almost entirely young wannabes that wouldn't have lasted a minute back in the 1970's/80's. Apart from the Russians, but they are a backwards race with identity and masculinity problems. English hooligans of the past wouldn't have jumped on people when the numbers were massively in their favour or used weapons, there was a code and bullying and/or stabbing people was frowned upon. It was about a fair fight, meaning equal numbers, and just your fists or your feet. Most hooligans of the past would have distanced themselves from these moronic shirtless drunks. It's an historical artefact like mods/rockers/punks/skins etc. Yes it was about fighting, but not throwing bottles at the police with your top off after downing ten pints of lager, you had to do it with some style and scoring points off your opposition also meant who was the best dressed as well.
it's funny how this film says that there is a link between the Dockers Strike in the 1930s. I bet none of the Burberry Crew know anything about it. Most Football Fans hate their rivals. There are no underlying Reasons.

I'm not a supporter of football,I just wondered what drives the hatred?are there similar rivalries in rugby?
