I love collecting vintage pens with names on them. In this way, the individual lives on as I care for their pen.

5 of 5 .When asked about my collections my stock answer is "funeral at 11 auction at 2".
Document everything of value and find someone that will see them go to good homes. If that is through auction,so be it.

I’ve got my collection down to under 10 pens now. I don’t remember when I bought my last pen, but it must have been at least 6 months ago. I think the cheapest is a Pilot Custom 743 and the most expensive is definitely a Namiki Yukari Royale (I’ve got 2-3 others that don’t count and they can go in the garbage for all I care. The rest though I’ve thought I should write a list with details on how to find current used prices as well as what they are currently worth so whoever they are left to can sell them for roughly what they are worth. While giving them away would be fine if I had someone close with an interest in them to leave them to, it seems to make sense to just allow someone to sell them at a reasonable price. That way they will still end up with someone who will appreciate them, and the money can be used by the person I’d like it to be left to to help them out, and perhaps even used by them to help others if they happen to be in a financial position where they don’t need the extra money themselves.
At the end of the day, fountain pens are tools - as fun as it is to get caught up collecting them, I’m glad I’ve stopped buying them, though I may eventually buy one or two more (and likely sell a couple more too). I’m often reminded of the following now when I’m tempted by that pen (or whatever) that I feel like I need (note “feel like” as opposed to actually need!):
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
    - Matthew 6:19-21, ESV

Since I'm in my Eighties I've thought about this quite a bit but haven't drawn any conclusion. I've used fountain pens all my life and they definitely are tools, lovely tools but still tools in my mind. I have way too many of them that I've collected over many decades. The closest I've come is to try to think about a pen dealer I could leave them with that would either re-sell or contribute them since they would at least understand something about them and their worth (monetarily and spiritually).

I always see stories of people buying Montblancs or Pelikan 800s at goodwill or other charity shops for a few dollars. I feel like it would be fun to facilitate that kind of discovery (on a much smaller scale), so that's where my pens can go.

I have, at 65, given some thought to this question! I have two children, sons, one of whom loves pens, and the other doesn't hate them. They both now have children. So, we'll see how all this works out. But, I'm thinking letter of direction, too. For my spouse, if she's not in the same terminal event, or for executor. My most local (too far off to attend) pen club would be a good place for the pens that don't make the specific bequests. I'm a hospital chaplain, so morbid is just part of my daily conversation! I hope to have two or three more decades of writing; but, just in case, I'm cultivating relationships where I can give away some pens now. It's fun!

I’m leaving my fountain pens to my two adult children (who are minimally interested in fountain pens) with instructions to do with them whatever they wish. I will also supply them with a list of what I paid for each pen in the event they would want to sell them.

When I die my kids can do what they want with my stuff. Keep, sell, give-away. At that point it won't matter to me and they can do whatever they think is meaningful.

Being in generally poor health, and just inside the lower end of being a senior citizen, I've thought about this for several years.
I have 2 daughters who show no interest in my pens. Maybe have them set aside one each to give to their sons, who are toddlers currently, but there's the rest...
I'm blessed. I have an adult great niece who has a definite interest in writing in general. I've already gifted her an Esterbrook 407 inkwell and Dip-Less pen. She'll be the recipient of the majority of my collection.
Will she use them? Probably at least some. But she's also savvy enough to disburse them as she will feel fit and make a decent chunk of change.

I would leave my writing instruments collection (I also have ballpoints, rollerballs and mechanical pencils besides my fountain pens and inks) to my son. Even though he doesn’t use fountain pens because “they are too much work/trouble”, I would hope he would eventually come to appreciate how nice a favorite pen can be. Over the years, he has been gifted some nice ballpoints and rollerballs and he uses those.

5 / 5! I’m new to your channel (hi!), but I love your energy. These videos have been great, so thanks for sharing your thoughts! If I had time to prepare for my passing, it would be cool to pen a letter to friends with a pen & ink combo that I then left to them. Maybe I’d ask them to write me back? 🤔 Even if they don’t get super into it, it would still be a meaningful keepsake!

I have thought about this because I see people posting on reddit /fountainpens that they don't know what to do with a collection they have inherited. That's made me realize It would be a good deal of work for someone who doesn't know about fountain pens to figure out how much to sell them for, etc. That is one big reason I have for wanting to keep my own collection more or less manageable (but yeah, I still have close to 50). Anyway, I"m lucky to have just penabled my two young adult kids so I'm planning to leave them my pens to keep, sell or give away!

I have a few family members (including my husband) who use fountain pens. So I think they'd get first dips and then would sell/give away whatever they didn't want. I have a spreadsheet so they would know what everything is worth. I also have a yarn and craft supply stash - pretty sure my husband would give that away mostly to some of my friends before donating it.

I'm 60 and never married/had children - I also have quilting and LOTS of knitting yarns, etc, including books that are out of print and sought after. I told my sister my yarn friends, etc get first choice and they would know what is valuable and could be sold (one book goes for around $300 on ebay often) - I am trying to work through what I already have and not purchase anything new. Jewelry, books, albums(records/lps) anything like that give direction on. I have a friend who has teacups/teapots - like 50 sets..

RUclips doesn't want me to tell you that since I'm getting old now (it happens to the best of us) I have definitely thought about this. I've got certain people in mind for certain pens and other things too because those things are cool and I honestly think they'd like them. 5️⃣ of 5️⃣! My children are 18 and 21 now and I even have a baby grandchild. I also have 2 nieces that I love to pieces. So this topic (in a much wider sense of course but including my extensive FP collection as well) did cross my mind a short while back during my daughter's pregnancy. None of them are too interrested in FPs. But they have an atachment to them because of me. And I have some pens that I solely bought because they reminded me of them. For instance I would have never thought of getting the Benu Draco Darling if my younger niece didn't give my grandchild's nickname: dino. I have the Benu Blue Tattoo pen because my daughter has had blue hair since forever (it's almost her natural hair by now) and she loves tattoos. I got the MB × Naruto colab because my son loved the manga serie etc etc. You get the idea. So I tell them that these pens can stay with them. And unless they would want to keep any other, I tell them about ways to sell them. I never used to keep my boxes (I hate them with a fiery passion) but I started to keep some of the boxes that matter now. And finally I want to start a detailed inventory of my pens (brand, model, year etc). So they can research each pen's market value at that time. Basically that is my plan at this time being. Because as you said, these pens have value. So if they don't want to use them they should at least be able to get some profit out of them. I want them to do so because everyone has an interrest in something they love and appreciate. It makes me smile to think that my passion for pens can turn into something they love and cherish

Five of five. Being borderline ancient already, parent to a 25 year old who doesn't care about my pens at all, having no will but plenty of won't, I've thought of what to do with the pens. Most of them are not costly, not rare, not much of much of anything, though others, like a handful of Benus and some Pelikans, are worth a bit and are kind of cool. Now I routinely buy dozens of cute, strange, or weird pens and just give them away. On rare occasions I will trade or sell one. A guy in my pen club will soon open a physical stationery shop, and he might be persuaded to manage the accrual. When I'm not breathing it won't matter to me, right?

I'm kinda at that age that I didn't expect to be alive this long, so I DO think about this since every day I wake up grateful to be alive to use my pens. 🤣 FIVE OF FIVE by the way..
My plan is actually that letter to try to encourage whoever handles my estate to distribute at least some of my pens to certain friends or family because I think they'd just like the pen. Not just pens of course, also other cool stuff I've got like my knitting tools and yarn stash. I definitely know who would be ecstatic to get that in my will, so my pen collection will also get a significant mention.

5/5: Today I turn 71 and my kids are not into fountain pens. If I have time, I will try to sell some and leave the money to my kids. I have thought about this a lot and I thought I might make a spreadsheet of the pens and their value at purchase and what the could be sold for. One of my kids would likely be able to sell them or donate them. I have no pen store or pen club anywhere near me. I am hoping that my grandson might get into pens before I leave this earth. I am also hoping that I have many more years to use my beloved pens. I also have massive art supplies but my granddaughter will get those. When you get to be my age, mortality is an issue and I think about it more and more. It is not morbid, just factual that no one gets outta here alive.

Ok here’s my “plan in the event of…”.
I have over 30 pens. I have 2 pen cases. The first pen case has all “preppy-like”, Jinhao, and Safari pens. That if they ended in the trash it wouldn’t be a major loss (though my ghost will steal them out the dumpster) the second case will hold the “good” pens (Pilot Custom Urushi, Namiki Emperor, Montblanc, Pelikan, etc), along with the inks/paper - cuz the ink and paper have to go too! My Executor will have instructions to contact a dealer/pen enthusiasts/estate appraiser etc, and try to sell them first and either donate the money towards my favorite charities or put towards my estate - whatever that is! 😂. Unfortunately I have no family that would be interested in fountain pen/inks at all. Hopefully, I will meet other pen enthusiasts by that time and will be able to leave everything in their hands and trust they will do what they feel is right. Hope this helps! The two cases serve as a complete collection and will avoid going through every pen. They just need to worry about the second case. Hope this helps! Thanks for a fantastic topic! God bless you! ❤

Do you know WHERE you would be going if you die though? You seem to think you're a good person. Have you ever lied(Exodus 20:16)? looked at someone with lust(Exodus 20:14/Matthew 5:28)? used God's name in vain(Exodus 20:7)? These are just 3 of the commandments (Exodus 20), we ALL fall short (Romans 3:23) & rebel the God who created the universe (Genesis 1:1/John 3:19). We die bc of the wages of our sin, physically (Romans 6:23) & eternally (Hebrews 9:27). If God judges you by His standard when you die, where will you go?
But the good news is Christ Jesus (John 1:1), Son of God in the Triune Godhead (Matthew 28:19) was born of a virgin by the Holy Spirit (God, see Matthew 28:19, 1:18 & Luke 1:35) to die for our sins (John 3:16/Romans 5:8/Romans 6:23b), taking the punishment we deserve on Himself freely(2 Corinthians 5:21). If you repent of your sins (turning away, not just saying sorry & playing the hypocrite going back to it) & trust in Jesus for our right standing with God (Mark 1:15), we are justified in God's sight, absolved of our sins (Isaiah 1:18), a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). God says whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved (Romans 10:13).
All other religions are works based, but Jesus said "I am THE way, THE truth & THE life, NO ONE comes to the Father EXCEPT through Me" (John 14:6), no other religion has claimed that, please consider His unique, free offer of eternal life & a clean slate (Psalm 103:12/Hebrews 8:12), transformed by the Holy Spirit (Romans 12:2).
