In fact Taimanov WAS relieved when Larsen was beaten wih the very same 6-0. It's not that he wanted it. He (as everyone else) didn't expect that this would happen. But after his defeat he was very heavily accused by the Party, was chased in many ways (funds removed, banned from performing as a journalist and a piano player). As he said in his own words "I don't know where all this would end, if there wasn't a help from an unexpected quarter: thanks to the colleague Bent Larsen who lost with that very same score! This had a sober effect to my prosecutors..."

Maybe also because Soviets though, as he was really quality pianist, maybe not the most technical, but definitely had spirit in his play. Vladimir Krainev was actually one of the best pianist of the time, but he dared not to win one competition and Soviets basically prosecuted him for that as well...
Petrosians smile is genuine, no? It seems he enjoys life regardless of situation. Even after losing to Fisher, I bet he was still smiling. For this, he has my admiration.
the Morphy-Anderssen game referenced is perfect not just because of the opening pattern similarity but because of the fact that Morphy, like Fischer, so rarely had badly-placed pieces. So looking forward to the rest of the games against Petrosian. Loving this series.

In November 1971 I had started my sophomore year in a new high school and discovered to my delight that the school library had a subscription to Chess Life and Review. So from the previous year of issues, I caught up on the Interzonal and the matches against Taimanov and Larsen. The finalist match between Fischer and Petrosian is the first match that I was able to follow "live," or as live as we could get in a Minneapolis high school. So I played through all the games and was mystified by many of the moves - well, I was 15 and new to the sport. These videos demystified a lot! So I was very excited to find this series and I binged on the whole match this afternoon. Thank you so much for the memories!
Great commentary on this game. I particularly like the "Funny Rook guarding a Funny Knight" at the end. It's the best way to describe Petrosian's unfortunate situation.....

He states it like such a boss, I have foregone my standard independent research and simply added it to my belief system. I look forward to future videos reinforcing this.

Interesting facts from the book "ending" of Frank Brady: at certain point of the match, when or was looking Like a draw with the 2 repetitions, the lights went off! The players had to wait for 11 minutes to fix it. It was Fischer's move and the arbiter stopped his clock, but Petrosjan protested because Fischer was analyzing the position in his head, so he agreed to have his clock started! He was analyzing the position in the dark for 11 minutes. Of course thats easy for a GM , but its an interesting fact about the game! I am reading this wonderful book about Fischer's life, and following the games of agadmator channel, its Just awesome! Its Like being with Fischer himself during the games! Higly reccomandable

@@casdomdomcas5214 Agree. I didn’t say I thought this of Fischer. I think his story is sad and inspiring, and I’m disappointed that in the end he came to despise the chess world. Outreach is important too, and since Fischer actively discouraged young people from getting into the game I think he can’t be the best/most significant player in chess history on principle. And we’ll never know how long Fischer would have remained number 1 since he quit the game. Too bad...
We don't even know if it was his peak. He didn't do the full course. Just stopped at 1972 because he wanted the world championahip got it and then was confused. This was big mistake for me and he should have gone to a psychologist but anyway he stopped at 29 yrs old.

I can't find a game between Capablanca and Marshall in which ether queen is on h6, as the song says. Which Capablanca vs. Marshal game are you referring to?
Hey agadmator, about 11...d5. It seems that contrary to your belief Fischer had not seen this previously, apparently he was rather surprised by the move. The long story short is: The Chebanenko version. He found 11...d5 years previously (so why not give it to Taimanov?) He sent a letter addressed to 'The Winner of the Petrosian - Korchnoi match.' This was the other semi-final being played at the same time as the Fischer - Larsen match. Petrosian won the the semi's opened the envelope and found all this analysis. Game One. Petrosain uncorks his novelty and a few moves later the lights go out. The clocks are stopped. Petrosian complains that Fischer is still analysing the moves in his head! They ask Fischer if the clocks can be re-started. Fischer, who had been the bane of tournament organisers everywhere complaining about the lightning agreed to sit there playing in the the total darkness! (you could not make this up). The light s come back on and Fischer walked right into the Russin prepared mainline. This is one of the few references in english about the matter, i will try to find another source in english.
This is from Garry Kasparov's book, PART IV. Yeah. Fischer was surprised but according to GK, when facing a destructive novelty, Fischer did not lose his composure. But he was indeed stunned to see the 11. ...d5 move. It was a nasty novelty that spelled doom for him if Petrosian opted for that rook takes g2 pawn.
What a fantastic game of chess that was. The power of the simple rook move to e4 near the end is effectively the winning move. Hats off to both players for a wonderful game. Loved it.

I like a lot your comments, they are showing us the possibilities but with internet and the acceleration, namely here on youtube, there is one thing we don't catch anymore: the time the players take for one move, the effort behind one move. It is something that takes me the heart when I am thinking about. The move of one piece is the result of a so big thinking. Here it seems easy because the result is given instantly.

As a Chess player myself and teacher of the the game I found the quote to be very true to life, its a mistake I have made myself many times . Its quite common to become so focused on your own plans that you do not pay enough attention to what your opponent is doing. Great defensive players like GM Petrosian rarely made this mistake, however just because you see what your opponent is doing does not mean you can stop him.

Man you say vast knowledge sarcastically but after watching you i know so much about chess that I hadn't before. Spassky Fischer, Kasparov Deep Blue, and Carlsen (a few of them) are the only real "famous" matches i have heard of before the chess channel. Now I know all about the 1959 Candidates and WCC, and the 1970 Interzonal tournament!
Petrosian was still kicking despite being 14 years older than Bobby Fisher. If they were both in their prime it would have been more interesting. But nevertheless, artistic game from both.

To be fair, the man was already world champion twice over. It's a lot easier to be nice and affable after a loss when you have nothing left to prove.

at 4:08, why didn't Tigran went Queen A5 check, then knight has to back (to block) - white proceeds with Bishop B4? developing 2 pieces with tempo while forcing white to back seems like a no brainer. Did I miss anything here?
