2:28 the leaves on my Super dwarf were bound and stuck together, Pruned it and got it out in the 60+ rain to green up. I'm hoping to see a flower around May/June! Fertilizing and watering it now after it's been overwintered. The Trunk is 8 inches thick for a 3ft tree. All signs pointing to this year being good!
BEWARE! I cut off my banana trees after winter like in the video, and opening up that inside with the sweet smelling banana water…the squirrels 🐿 went, uhh, bananas! They ate two of my plants down to the ground. Like giant celery stalks! I had to battle them over the next year because once they developed a taste, they wouldn’t leave the trees alone, eating or nibbling new leaves as they began to grow. Eventually, I had to trap them and relocate 7 squirrels. Never heard of this happening to anyone else, but that’s been my experience here in Tally! Good luck! Btw…I recently cut off the flower underneath a few bunches of bananas on my Veinte-Cohol banana tree. I used the heart of the flower chopped up in a stir fry…good stuff! I’m also gonna see what the squirrels were into when I chop this plant down and eat the heart of the stalk of the plant. 😋
@@avenuex3731 Didn’t work. Maybe it would if I doused them every morning in neem. That didn’t seem feasible. I also tried that wolf-urine spray, and some homemade habanero pepper spray. Nope. There was no undoing the taste they developed for banana plant!
I cut mine down at the bottom of the trunk and cover with the leaves and mulch we have hard freezes in the Midwest but mine grow back bigger and stronger every year
Hey, I’m in New Jersey 07 acres about that I’m going to freezing month or twice during the winter right now with about 50°. My banana trees are about 20 feet are huge. When should I start cutting the leaves and cutting it down last year I cut them all down. I just the leaves as much like you had suggested and they grew back amazingly it’s getting cold out. I would like to know if you check this
No. You do not cut off the dead leaves, those leaves may not be effective in photosynthesis, but it still gives the tree its nutrients snd and if you leave a raw open cut, the water that drips off the tree will freeze and definitely kill it. It puts the tree into too much shock.
You're incorrect about bundling to insulate the trees during winter. Even though plants don't generate their own heat, by putting a 3 ft diameter or larger chicken wire basket around the Banana tree and filling it with straw or leaves, what you're doing is #1 keeping the cold far away from the tree and #2 Allowing the 50 deg F ground heat to keep the roots warm and heat rises. Also, water is an excellent conductor of heat and since a Banana tree is 90%+ water, the 50 deg ground heat travels right up the trunk to protect most of the pseudostem, if not all if you insulate it all the way to the top and cover the top. Most zones where you would attempt to grow a cold hardy banana have a ground frost line depth of less than 3 ft, so the ground underneath the 3ft diameter insulation basket will stay around 40- 50 deg right at the banana tree roots. If one were to make an even larger 4 ft diameter insulation basket, a cold hardy banana such as a Dwarf Namwah can easily be overwintered and kept alive in as low as zone 6. it's already been done and proven. For many people though, it would just be easier to dig up the Banana tree, cut off the leaves, ans store it over winter in a cellar or garage around 50 deg.
Can you plant the tree in the winter months? I have someone wanting to sell some trees and some snow trees. I’m in North Carolina zone 7b? How much to offer per tree and baby tree? Hopeful of feedback, new subscriber
Can someone help. My banana tree in Southern California is in a state of flux. Last season was our first go-around and we didn't know what we were doing. As of now the flowers been cut. The fruit has been cut and it is left with four big leaves. My thought was to do with this guy did in the video and chop off the top. But the fact that we are in the summer.. should I wait until winter? Or if I chop it now will it work out?
Will the growth of pups hinder the growth of the main plant? Like should I cut away the pups until main plant has fruited? Also been told that you need pups to come up to replace main plant as a tree only fruits once.
I have a tree given to me. I don't know the name. It has been growing now for 1.5 yrs with lots of pups but no fruit. What can I do to help it to bear?
Damn man I got one banana tree in my backyard close to my house I have the same blue siding and we got one banana tree that looks like it's dying wish I could send a picture
Nope!! I’ve been growing different bananas varieties trees for 30 years and only cut off the yellow or dead leaves!! The trees need the leaves year round to survive and be healthy! It also needs the leaves so the baby plants can grow!
It will be much appreciated & convincing when you can be much more kind to the plants you grow instead of cutting & handling it this harsh... Just for the sake of video don't hurt the plants... Treat them well...

@@artwillvideos How did you go with the heart of the stalk?
I also use the tender part of banana flower for cooking

Haven’t had any trouble cutting leaves ever
That makes sense
you should cut on an angle so the water wont pool up and you get rot
After the stalk produces can I let continue to grow, instead of cutting it back, just to be decorative?
Very informative, thanks so much

I just bought a bannana tree from home depot but the leafs got really damaged during transport should I just chop them and let new ones grow?
I'm interested to know what you ended up doing, and did your tree survive. I have a have a new banana tree.

Do we have to cut our banana trees down when they bring in fruit
No dude, simply cut the trunk whwre the fruits grow

So if i understand one plant give multiple trunk from there root ?
Will this tree survive the harsh NJ winters from time to time? Average is about 30F but there can be times it goes single digits.
No

Good job man,... Im kinda gettin the "green thumb", living in lake wales florida....im emotionally attached to this one bannana tree we got..
Great video i wonder if itis safe to plant a banana tree close a house due to termites ?
The truck is not wood its a pseudostem so it is just leaves wrapped up tight. It will be fine
Does this work for a Musa Basjoo?
Thanks

If you didn't notice, breaking those is fairly meaningless as he's trimming them anyways. It's getting cut off immediately following this video.
man, what the tree do to you!? jk thank you for the video
It’s not True🫣🫣👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
Don’t plant them at all.
These aren’t banana plants …
Fun fact: Did you know plants and trees “scream” in pain whenever we cut them?
I have no trunk and I must scream
Is this really true
Thank ypu
