What a man, what a gem of a person late Utpal Dutt ji truly was. Nowadays, the kind of unthinkable, stupid and absurd things people do in thee name of 'sanskar', must learn from this Utpal Dutt ji!.... Such a high standard of thinking, which is filled with absolute intelligence and wisdom. That thing he said in the movie regarding the english language, I strongly believe is the same idea by which he lived his life!... Har 1 bhasha Ganga ki tarah pavitra hoti hai, lekin jo bhasha seekh ke insan apni hi sanskriti bhul jaye, uska koi matlab nahi. Nothing can be truer than that. And yes, as he said in the movie, in real life too he was an MA holder in english and a gold medalist in his subject!... He used to teach the students english literature at a university, before starting his career in acting. I just don't think today's any of the current actors can even come close to this man. God bless him and keep him happy, wherever he is...
do you turn your head when faced with irony???the character in movies portrayed by the actors aren't supposed to mimick their true character.also hrishkesh mukharjee,a great auteur,is famous for his parodical replication of real life and how one can take these things too seriously.this is a parody.thats why uptal dutt's character is the butt of the joke.
Master of plays too. He had done one play in 8 diff languages including sanskrit.
One thing I should rectify...He was not an M.A. but honours graduate in english...He taught english in South Point School...I was closely associated with his theatre group PLT which was erstwhile LTG...whatever his academic qualification he was a connoisseur in english and anauthority in Shakespearian drama...Later on applied his acumen in his group theater where he proved his mettle on Brecht...

The spontaneity & timing was unique...U cannot find in any other actor.In his age at 5 he could commit to memory all Shakespearean dramas numbering about 35 which bewildered his school teacher.

And he even won several Filmfare Awards for Best Comedian, for 'Golmaal', 'Naram Garam', etc.

He acts very nicely whenever he plays a strict person's role. Can't say if it is right, but remember reading somewhere that he was working in Education sector before entering movies. I think that might have helped him in handling such roles. 🙂
Of course this is my favorite movie. I liked watching him in Guddi too - especially the scene in which jaya badhuri narrates the story of encounter of a rogue with character Navin - the expression Utpal Dutt gives with WIDE OPEN eyes showing how surprised he is while she narrates is just hilarious 🙂

I have watched the original Golmaal some 70+ times easily in all these years. I never get tired of watching Utpal Dutt as the owner of Urmila Traders. Besides this fantastic role that he essayed, his role of police commissioner Dhurandar Bhatawdekar in Rang Birangi was fabulous. Naram Garam was a gem from Hrishida and his role as the elder brother was superb. A great actor, brilliant comedian and amazing acting abilities. Every time I feel emotionally down, I just have to switch on the Golmaal movie and things are normal again. 😅
