I had the privilege of being part of "The Assembly," Channel NewsAsia’s latest reality show series where neurodivergent individuals like myself interview special guests from various walks of life. This experience opened my eyes, even as someone with lifelong multiple neurodiversity conditions, to a ‘whole new world’-a deeper understanding of human nature, relationships, and the way we value one another.
Key Reflections from this Experience:
1️⃣ The human heart craves the same things-friendship, acceptance, belonging, and community.
Whether neurodivergent or neurotypical, these needs remain universal. Valuing individuals means seeing them as people of intrinsic worth, rather than treating relationships as transactional exchanges for networking, favors, or personal gain.
2️⃣ Everyone-regardless of ability-needs 'heart surgery' from within.
We all grapple with selfishness, apathy, self-absorption, jealousy, and envy daily. Neurotypicals may be better at masking these inner struggles, while neurodivergent individuals, often unaware of social cues, may display them more openly. But the fundamental need for transformation is the same-whether we acknowledge it or not.
3️⃣ Purity is not found in naivety, but in wisdom.
The younger neurodiverse generation benefits from greater awareness, early diagnoses, interventions, and societal accommodations-opportunities the older generation never had. Many of us had to ‘sink or swim’ in a world that didn’t understand us.
Yet, through those struggles, we learned valuable lessons-not to be naive, to be prudent, and to understand the depths of human nature. While we often take longer to grasp these realities, the friendships we forge, though fewer, are built on depth and sincerity.
💡 A Choice to Make:
A life of alienation, loneliness, and misunderstanding can either:
✔ Make us channels of blessing-better equipped to encourage, advocate, and support others who struggle like us.
❌ Or turn us into self-entitled narcissists-using the banner of inclusivity as an excuse for inconsiderate, rude behavior at the expense of others.
At the end of the day, whether neurotypical or neurodivergent, we are all accountable for our actions, our words, and the way we treat others. Labels do not absolve us from personal responsibility.
