  • While at Jim Manley's home during our Fall 2007 tour, Jim shared his unique approach to air with Brian MacDonald and myself (Kevin Burns).

    I had the fortune to study with Jim for 5 hours; he opened up my mind to new possibilities. I can now get the occasional Double C when I used to struggle with high C. Jim is a great guy who is very personable and friendly and I consider him a good friend. And "selector111" he is not really pushing out his stomach and if he is it is merely a result of breathing low. When he he has the guy touch his stomach while he plays high, his stomach doesn't clench or move at all..absolutely amazing man

    I swear I rewatch this video like once every 6 months. I showed it to Fred Mills when I was studying with him and his response was "Those Air Force guys sound great but Jim Manley is right on with what he's saying about air." We talked about it some more in my lesson that week and Fred just really dug the whole discussion. It's a very natural, relaxed approach to breathing. He also was very complimentary of you two guys from the Airmen of Note. Fred wasn't a big jazz player but sure did love hearing good trumpet players.
    Thanks for the video, man. And keep up the great playing.

    I'm a flutist and I agree that this is fantastic advice for any wind player. I think of using a lower pitched breath rather than a higher pitched breath (I think this may have been what he was saying). It helps open the throat and causes the breathing to come from the diaphragm rather than the throat.

    I don't know if this is the greatest video lesson I've seen, but I will say it has the highest help/length ratio I've ever seen.

    It worked! Even more important (for me) it stopped me from getting dizzy when playing high notes! Thank you!

    AWESOME lesson from Jim, and absolutely consistent with what Charlie Schlueter (via his disciple, Bob Dolwick), and (may he RIP) Don (Jake) Jacoby also taught!
    And btw, if you EVER have a chance to The Airmen of Note with Brian and Kevin, do NOT miss it, friends.
    BIG sounds, surgically accurate in the “double” range, stylistically perfect, in tune, section synchrony, all of it! Good as it gets!

    Jim plays like high notes is like drinking water. He doesn t even push out his belly too much. I believe he as the perfect embouchure, in turn makes it the perfect vehicle for air to freely flow

    Hey Kevin, I was wondering with 15 years of perspective what you think of the info presented in this video?

    Really interesting vid. It seems to go right against what Claude Gordon advocated - ie, keep the chest high etc. Any thoughts?

      @trumpetplanet 8 лет назад +1

      I completely agree. There are a lot of people who disagree with Claude Gordon, it's just that Gordon's fanboys tend to shout louder.

    So wat is he saying especially at the beginning, does he mean blow the air from your stomach first? and is he saying to use pressure like in the other vid wen they were talking about arturo and the ring breaking off lol

    Yeah, I got some thoughts. 99.9% of really good players should not open their mouth because at that moment they become laughable. Every time they are doing this they once again prove the axiom: playing and teaching are two different worlds.

    • @trumpetplanet
      @trumpetplanet 8 лет назад +3

      A lot of good players actually don't know how they do it because they got the knack early on. Jim Manley, on the other hand know's what he's talking about.

    • @trumpetplanet

      Claude Gordon was a good player, maybe he should have kept his mouth shut too.

      Haritonov46 sounds like most of what he was saying was pretty spot on...just because he doesn’t have the eloquence you might be looking for doesn’t mean he becomes “laughable”. Get off your high horse
