Thank you for this Chris - My wife and I are both disabled so I wanted to make it really clear just how much you've helped us feel more safe and secure in our own home. Given the extent of the changes and the lack of backwards compatibility with earlier versions, I would really appreciate you doing a 'set up from scratch' type video with 0.14 like the ones you did a few years back. I know this is a huge ask, but those videos are basically the only reason I have Frigate working at all. I am on 0.14 now, though it took many hours of frustration to get the basic set up I have. I just know I'm missing tons that Frigate can do, but every time I try to 'tweak' things I break stuff ! I think that's probably because there's some fundamentals not quite right in my config file since 0.14 -I had to delete lots from what was working previously prior to .13 - many thanks for all your generous hard work putting this information out there.
Slow at playing back , I get a few seconds of a spinning circle before anything play back , but I really love the zone on play back, that is something we have missed for a long time , record in 4K and stuck watching it back in standard HD. So all in all a nice upgrade .
Hopefully more iterations will improve things. Some of that could be attributed to storage and disk I/O. I'm playing from a NAS over the network so very small delay but not much.
Hi Chris do you think you do another video on the new Frigate and how to configure it with reolink cameras. It works be good to go through how to configure the frigate yml file and how to set up object recognition. I have a reolink doorbell, but objects do not show up in the objects and alerts frigate. It's a good upgrade but some things in the old frigate were better
Thanks Chris for this as always. I haven't even tried your V13 beta guide from 8 months ago (still on V12) and now we are in v14! Great progress. Wondering if you were using the same config.yml from your v13 video on this v14 beta? If not, can you share your config file so I can have a guide comparison when I'm rebuilding my v12 config? TY! EDIT: nevermind I figured it out. You can use it, I just had to remove the ui: block from the config.yml.
Yep. The UI caused it not to load (think I mentioned that in the video). Other than that, it's been working well with the same config. Even the alerts via Home Assistant worked fine with no changes.
Hi Chris. Great video! I’m just getting started with Frigate. I’m so new, that I don’t yet know, what I don’t know. :) The video quality coming off your cameras looked really good to me. I wonder if you would mind sharing what kind of cameras you use, and if they are ones that are still currently available for purchase somewhere, or if yours are a discontinued model. I need to buy some, and I might as well start with ones that are proven to work with Frigate. Thanks! :)
In my old house, I had a hodge podge of cameras. When I moved, I replaced them all with the same one. Looks like they are still available, at least in the US. amzn.to/3SoGTAP
@@mostlychrisFantastic! Thanks for the reply and the link. I think it may be time to stop beating my head against the wall with these Reolink RLC-410’s and get some new cameras.
This is amazing. Thank you for putting this video together. I have a quick question. I noticed you have car detection in your driveway. How do you deal with the car that is just parked (stationary) and got an alert for the come vriving into the garage? Thank you again for all your hard work!
Good question. You prompted me to go back and look at the zone config. My street zone watches for cars but the driveway does not. I see the stationary box in debug for the truck. The car entering the driveway must have triggered on something else. I do have a zone for the camera in the garage that senses when a vehicle enters there and turns on the ultrasonic distance sensor for parking adjustment.
Thank you for the video! Could you please tell me what hardware you use for Frigate besides Coral? What would be the best option for recording 8-10 cameras? I want to run Home Assistant and Frigate on the same computer. Would an Intel N100 be sufficient?
Good morning, I installed the Frigate NVR add-on on Home-Assistant/Supervisor on a mini-pc and perfectly integrated 5 cameras. I also configured the Coral USB, even if the CPU values are very high (even 90%). Would I have any improvements if I installed another Coral USB? Also, is it possible to save Frigate videos directly on an external Hard Disk? Thank you in advance for your kind reply! P.s.: it would be nice to see a video of yours on these topics too!
That might have to be another channel. Would be curious how many people would be interested in the radio stuff as it relates to tinkering and such. I realized early on the pilot stuff doesn't fit this niche at all. I didn't know how RUclips worked when I first started so the channel info included airplane stuff but I haven't done much with it.
I eliminated frigate from my Home Assistant blue since it took up so much space, and basically bricked my home assistant with 100% used memory. I have a NUC and a Google Coral. How can I put Frigate on the NUC and have Home Assistant ‘see’ it? I loved the person notifications and would love to get them back!
I am running Home Assistant and Frigate on the same machine, but it's an Unraid server. Home Assistant runs on a VM, since I needed the "OS" version, and Frigate runs on docker. They both have different IPs, and from each one's perspective, it looks like the other one is on a different machine on the network. I also, run a separate docker for the MQTT Broker, again on the same machine. So how do they all work together? On Frigate's config, you setup the MQTT Broker's IP and port. And on Home Assistant, you first add the MQTT Integration, also point it to the corresponding IP and port the your broker runs on, and then add the Frigate Integration, pointing it to your Frigate's IP, and port. For YOU, I ASSUME the broker will still run on the same machine as HA, and frigate on the NUC. So ALL you need to do, is find each service's IP and port, and point them to the others accordingly. This would even work if they run on different continents :D (technically). 😅
Basically there are 3 ways I understand: 1. The correct way: Set up your config file correctly. You can set global, or per camera footage retention days. Both for 24/7 recordings, AND for Events like Alerts and Detections. I've set mine to 5 days. (for most NVRs I usually prefer half a month or so, but since this has all the AI detection stuff, you can export what is of importance and keep it forever.) (Moreover, if Frigate find out that you are running out of space, it automatically deletes the first one or two hours of footage. That means the OLDEST footage in your drives) 2. In the "Review" tab, you can select multiple events, and once selected a "DELETE" option will appear on the top right corner. There you can delete footage as well, PER SEGMENT of alert. I use this to delete footage that I really don't want to keep for some specific reason. 3. You can manually delete files from inside the media folder structure. I have frigate installed on an Unraid Server. I don't know if thats possible if you are running it on top of Home Assistant. In unraid it's super easy.
"RIGHT click" on the clip you want in the review taps, and that would select it. Then you can delete or export it from there. It took me like two weeks to accidentally find that out.
Anywhere to go for beginners/dummies to learn Frigate who have no experience at all with setting something like this up? How does this compare to Blue Iris? Does it detect humans pretty well and quickly? How good of a computer is needed? Do most security cameras work with this? Sorry for all the questions but we all had to start at step 1. Thanks Chris, I did subscribe.
You can look back at my earlier videos on Frigate to get a high level understanding. The config file format and options have changed quite a bit since the beginning (for the better). The frigate website has good info. I like this better than Blue Iris because BI requires a Windows computer and it tends to run hot all the time. I am running Frigate on an older mini PC with a Coral TPU. That mini runs a bunch of other things so Frigate is much less resource intensive. ( I think I have a video on BI vs Frigate even). BI has a purpose as do stand alone DVR/camera combos. Frigate was originally made to be compatible with Home Assistant so that is also a plus. There are too many different camera models out there to say they all work. However, there is a good number that are supported and sample tweaks for some of them to make them work even better.
What did I just do I tried to install the beta version and stopped the version I've been running and tried to start the other one couldn't get it started and then went to restart the other one and now my frigate won't start up at all even after uninstalling the beta version of frigate
Your video scrubbing didnt really seem to work. Unifi if you scrub through video it shows the thumbs very clearly as you scrub through. I want to get on something open source, but that feature is main thing I like to use.
Just installed 14.1 .. used to have 13.1 .. nice UI however I used to run 13 behind nginx and authelia .. for some reason i can`t make it work no matter what I forward to into nginx ... or no matter of the bypass or onetime setting in authelia config .. not sure if this is now a broweser issue (usually firefox) however chrome doesn`t work either .. so the site gets the forward but i end up with a black screen .. windows or android same story .. works fine locally on both ports .. but not via cloudflare anymore .. anyone run into a similar issue ? HA works as well so I`m fine for the time being .. however if I want to log remotely via browser from outside I use my domain and I would really need that ..

Change title to include Frigate. It will help find this video and gives more views.
The first thought was "is this home assistant video or ?"
Good suggestion! Thanks!
I love Frigate, this is a big step
Agreed!
Awesome updates - and of course, awesome video covering them! Keep up the good work!
OMG cant wait until the full release. I hated having to copy and paste the masks. having the live update is fantastic. Great review!!!
Thanks! I love the new look.
Been so busy didn’t even realize 0.14 was getting there. Thanks for the video.
0.13 has been rock solid so I didn't even think to check on it until recently. Glad I did.
Love what's going on here brother! Keep em' coming!!!!
Thanks! Will do! Didn't know you were a sub. Thanks for that!

great review Chris!
Thanks!
Thanks for the update, appreciated
No problem 👍
great update, did you figure out the birdseye url?
Looks like it runs smooth! What hardware you’re running frigate on?

Is there a video where you show how to setup the main screen with the static images until motion is detected?

11:20 how do I get live view to show in full resolution? Mine is only from the substream at the moment. :(
It should be automatic. Sounds like maybe your config is backwards or referencing the wrong stream.
Hi Chris
When are you going to do a Radio stuff video? Or a Pilot stuff video?
73 de CT2HUU

Nice review. Just gave it a try. Is there a way to just download an event? Previous version had the little download icon that made it really easy.
I don't think so. I just checked and you have to go to the export button and choose a time range. You can click on the event to get there though.
what is the purpose of the user section? can i login with them and disable anonyms access?
is V.13 birds eye view still there? Birds eye is my most favorite View Port
Yes, but you have to add birdseye to a camera group or create a group and put only birdseye there. Birdseye is treated just like any other camera.
What gpu do you have? seems like a decent inferance speed so i'm curious.
I use a coral TPU (USB). Without that, it wouldn't run on the hardware I'm using.
I eliminated frigate from my Home Assistant blue since it took up so much space, and basically bricked my home assistant with 100% used memory. I have a NUC and a Google Coral. Thanks for the heads all I had to do was blow away all the old masks and running with no issues.
Excellent!
Still in beta? Dang! Getting close hopefully.
Hopefully, but I've been running it successfully for a bit now. Not worried about being beta at this point.
Please show to us (especially for me) your updated configuration file please 🥲
How to delete older footage?
yeah, I watched the video hoping to learn how to do that

Yes. The Coral TPU USB version.

Hard for me to help without understanding how you are running frigate. Check the logs.

Still incredibly painfull to configure.
can't wait for them to add a onvif configurator

It's so completely maddening that developers still make end users edit conf files by hand.
Can no longer scrub/seek video. Now you're stuck waiting for the event to come up.

I always say it like biscuit. Not the fried potatoes. I could be wrong. Known to happen!
1st! Thanks Chris!
Thanks!
Beta better than Arlo Prod (never again).
The beta has been working well for me.
