My wife and I were visiting NYC a couple of weeks ago during the heatwave and chanced to visit this store. I'm new to the hobby but never miss Steve's great videos. I have to say that if you enjoy the Audiophiliac and his work, you'll enjoy visiting this shop. There's a nice casual atmosphere and the staff are friendly and helpful. I never felt like I didn't know enough to be shopping there during our visit. Very nice for us Newbies. As always, great work Mr Audiophiliac!
wish we'd seen more of his inventory.
I would have liked to see more of these different brands and more of what his shop looks like.

Your conversation brought back a lot of memories. Growing up in Brooklyn in the 70's, I loved going into Stereo Warehouse, Ciro's and EBA to look at all the Sansui's, Technics, etc. receivers of the time!
Did not even know this existed ..so glad to find a new seemingly friendly audio dealer as the old places i have frequented only want to speak to you if your buying a 100,000 system and a 20 grand install ..even if you have shopped and spent 20 or more over the last 25 yrs ..or just dropped 5 grand on speakers ..ask a question and they make you feel stupid .. and auditioning speakers they try to set up a front end that cost 5 times what you have at home ..
Good video-subject. But Steve should do a tour on the equipment and continue the interview looking around. The videos are a bit too static.
I am one of your viewers who may never be in the area of this store and would have enjoyed at least a few minutes of the interior of the store
It would be great if you were in the shot during the interview just to see the interplay between you and the guest. I think you did it once before and it was waaaay better.
I went here during my trip to NYC a few years back. It was really quite a cool place.
You really should check out Bob Carvers newest tube amplifiers they have a 10 year warranty on it including the tubes which have an estimated 50 rear life due to his unique dc restorer . These amplifiers are said to sound as good as amps costing many times what these cost. Give your ears a treat and listen to them then tell us what you think.
I love that place! I got my turntable from them (ClearAudio Performance DC Wood/ Hana SL cart), and pop in every now and again to say 'hi'. Great to see them featured!
Great interview! I would have loved to see more of the store, I know its not a store review but I found him interesting and wanted to see what he found interesting. I know it would have made for a long video as well.

So true an Album is about having a conversation with someone else you share an interest with I've only just found your channel but it was so refreshing just listening to you both and the knowledge you have acquired for the product to the inner search for something real great stuff guys have a good one
Enjoyed your video Steve. As far as interior design, appealing to a certain generation makes good business sense and selling brands that don't make you think of Grandpa's old stereo you use to stair at and was told never touch as a child should bring in your targeted customers.
As a teenager of the early and mid 1970's my friends and I felt more at "home", at ease in a building that didn't look like my Mom & Dad's living room, more like my bedroom painted an "odd" color (according to Dad.) with posters of Hendrix, Zeppelin and the ever present Peace Sign. Let's not forget the Black Light! Come to think of it... I believe I just described the average "Head Shop" of yesteryear, lol!

I'd turn around at the door and start to look for a store with wall-to-wall carpets. The 80's were the best anyway.
@@thegrimyeaper- I'm sure it's a wonderful store and that the owner is a wonderful and knowledgable guy. But no carpet? They should have some kind of sound treatment. At least I hope they do. It's tough enough deciding which components sound the best.

I agree that handmade audio components and speakers are special. A couple months ago, I bought a microZOTL 2 and requested the builder to sign it. Since I live close to LTA, I picked it up and met the builder. I appreciate the soul that goes in to hand made audio pieces.

I bought my Shindo Aurieges and Montille from ILS years ago. Shindo was new to me at that time. This was the best audio purchasing experience I'd ever had. Not just because of the greatness of the Shindo equipment but Steve made it an enjoyable and stress-free experience.
How about the address? And it would be nice if at some point you took a long shot of the store so we get a sense for what his "vibe" is and a better look at what he carries.

Steve, I think this video was a bit of a missed opportunity. In addition to showing us the store, another entertaining thing would be to ask your guest about a few stories from his fairly long career as a hifi retailer. He could have spoken about how the business has changed. He could have talked about buying trends or whether he's had some interesting people buy gear from him over the years. But as it turned out, the video was quite plain vanilla and superficial in nature when there was a chance to have a bit more meat on the bone. I am a devoted watcher (and supporter through Patreon) but this one missed the mark.
There is something to be said when equipment is well designed and is pleasing to look at. It really is an important part of this “hobby” or “pastime” that you don’t get from the “big box” store experience which is designed to drive unit sales period.

Even tho you are based in the US, you'd probably get a kick at meeting with Graeme from cdfaudio based in Montreal, Canada. Same philosophy. Exclusively low power, high-end gear with few choices and high quality selection.

Hey Steve could you explain over driving speakers and what I can do to fix the problem, I'm pretty new to audio stuff and recently bought the Vanatoo T1E (optical) for my living room TV after enjoying the Vanatoo T-Zero (USB) on my desktop PC. I noticed when watching Netflix I can have T-Zero at half volume and it sounds loud and the speaker drivers don't move to much but on the T1E I have to Max the volume and it still doesn't sound as loud but I can see the speaker drivers really moving working hard. Do you have any tips I could try?
Anxious to hear your entry level tube component suggestions. Especially integrated receiver with phono pre.

Syracuse had more than their fair share of stores in the 70's. I traveled an hour to check out Erie Blvd in 73 or 74 because there were only two stereo stores in Ithaca (well maybe 2 1/2). The Syracuse retail scene was also better than the 2 or 3 serious stores in Albany at that time, too.
I am also wondering what "In Living Stereo" does to tame room reverberation. Some rugs and upholstered furniture might serve them well.

Yippie!!! An upstate guy in NYC doing well in the audio biz. Audio shops in Albany and Syracuse are gonzo these days. Thankfully, Rochester still has several to choose from but it’s a tough business up here given so few audiophiles on a per capital basis. Lots are also forced to shop via phone or the internet or travel, pending on where they live given no local specialty audio shops.
Very encouraging to hear that this shop is attracting younger buyers. Being close to NYU, in the village and in a city with 8+ million people certainly does not hurt. I also enjoyed hearing about the different types of people who frequent his obviously cool shop.
Never been to this shop but have checked out their website many times. I know they also carry Naim and Spendor to name a few that most of us should know. Maybe you can do a sequel there to show their full line offering + LP’s. If not, folks should check out there web site.
The one issue with buying new audio in NYC is that few, if any, dealers offer meaningful discounts. My metro NY friends tell me the deals are much better in Jersey or elsewhere. The feeling is that high rents and wages are the keys drivers here.
Nonetheless, love the vibe of the store and Steve is another nice upstate guy who’s done good.
What I did not agree with is the choice to listen to whole albums vs. only the songs you like. To me, life is too short to listen to stuff that clearly does not move me, despite what the artist wanted. To me, hand picked digital playlists are the way to go. But different strokes so it’s all good.
I will definitely visit the next time I am in the city.
Again Steve, absolutely love your on-location video’s with real people and their equipment in environments where they live or work. Aesthetics certainly play into the equation as Steve aptly pointed out.
I'm assuming he has some more affordable gear than what we saw since college kids are buying there?

I didn't realize Steven was from Syracuse. I remember Gordon Electronics, Clark Music, and Superior Sound from the early 80s. I wonder what the fourth store he was thinking of was? Tech Hifi?
Retro may be cool, Steve - I'm a mid-century modern tragic - but when it leads to cliches like an Eames chair in every listening room I realize that I have to find something else to obsess over. There's definitely a niche on YT for a 'Pipe and Slippers Audio' channel, but I fear that the people who would be attracted to that would attempt to stamp their own preferences on the content of such a channel. Thanks for the video.

The Man Understands
Although I purchased speakers, a turntable, and headphones from this place over the years, I had such a bad experience with one of their salespeople (when they still had their record store) I vowed never to step foot in there again.
I'm in the market for a Line Magnetic amplifier right now and they sell them (I live 15 minutes from the store) but they will never get my business again. One of the worst retail experiences ever.

Wow! Smoke and mirrors still clouding the air on the NY sales floor hifi scene. Brands come-n-go seems to still be the message. Unfortunately couldn't gleam much insightful thought in this conversation other than the historical validity of wall to wall carpets. Then there's never a lack of opinions either to substantiate the transistors relevancy, or tubes maintaining their heir to the throne status. A wasted opportunity indeed.

Tried to set up an audition for the AMG Viella here...I was rudely dismissed on the phone...went to Audio Connection in NJ where I was treated well and purchased the table...guess I sounded too old.
What’s wrong with the 80’s?!! That was the greatest era of cars and music. Hifi was just starting to die, but still going strong. It’s been all downhill since the 80’s!

No turntable for me. Higher price, more components in the rig, complex setup, wear and tear, clicks and pops, large storage estate for the disks and further care for them. It's like beating the dead horse. Final nail on the coffin is that more people are leaving the vinyl, passing away then the new blood is coming. It's going to have its own followers but dwindling with each passing day, end of the story.
Every ART needs a Canvas to draw on, which is what I think toward the end of your interview the gentleman was talking about Albums. Albums were a Canvas which Artist and the Public could sit down and enjoy together. But as Zappa and others warned it is controlled by a 'media of profit' who saw CDs and chance to sell not music, but units. The End :(
I thought this for a long time, but I became more convinced when I discovered that 'Artist' like Bing Crosby were heavily involved in improving the Canvas which they used to convey their art form. The Artist today are no longer involved in that process and the Corporations under 1 Flag are happy.

@@JohnDoe-np3zk I think 'One Size' was an incredible album, but as a little earlier Zappa fan, I think it was an album that increased Zappa's fan base and are not as familiar, at times, with his earlier albums.
