I was riding the subway for the same time again in Korea and I noticed that 99% of people were stuck to their phones. There was no societal interaction, no interest in others, and no curiosity with others. I tend to take a book and read it while riding the subway which prompts the elder generation to interact with me, I do hope that people move away from their phones, towards more that is happening in front of them. EDIT: Thanks for all the likes. Glad it resonates with some.
Tbh a subway was never a place for social interactions with strangers. It’s just a means to an end. If you want social interactions join a club or go to an event…
Who is to blame for the addiciton to technology? Individuals or the giant corporations that have made this technology integral to living and even surviving in the world? A lot of tech CEOs don't let their children use the very technology they invented and put into the hands of millions (and profited immensely off of). I wonder why that is....
The phone or all quadrant-shaped computer interfaces are only here for some limited time. They will be exchanged for VR or - much better - Augmented Reality in a few years. That‘s the point we as societies and individuals will change again. Why do I think that? It‘s quite easy: Our braines and bodies are not made for looking at a screen. It limits us mentally and emotionally. Watching downwards activates emotions for examples. Staring at tiny fonts deactivates our emotions and activates or non-social-pure-rational side etc. Something like that. But if we just start to wear glasses oder little projectors we get back the full range of motion. Not energy-wise (there is still a gap), but at least from our body in general. Do we need to interact with strangers on a bus? Well - it depens. Often - in the past - people felt alone because they knew noone like them. Today you can find these people online around the world. That‘s wonderful. Make friends with like-minded people. But not just while staring at screens, but by creating wonderful stuff together in augmented reality. That‘s what I think will free us. At least I hope ;)
The decline in socializing since smart phones became common is remarkable. Especially noticeable is the lack of small talk among strangers, for example turning to chat to the person next to you while waiting in line at a store or a concert, talking to the people next to you while waiting for a show to start at a theatre, or on a long train ride or airplane. Also now you see some friends or families waiting for food at restaurants, where everyone pulls out a phone. When I was in high school and college I used to carry a deck of cards and played so many card games with friends while waiting for things.
Exactly, we should be less on phones and more in the real world, unless, necessary! A digital detox, should be a lifestyle! We should try to be more mindful when on devices and give ourselves a break! I remember when phones, were just for calls and emergencies, nothing else, people were more communicative then! I feel now, others don’t want to talk, as much, I mean, it’s not always feasible, but I used to say hello, a lot to strangers, when walking by or at least, smile, some smile back, others grunt, but I don’t do,as much now, as some seem to be in shock, when you say, Hello! Come on, it’s only, Hello! 👋😅☺️
I agree with this. However, everyone you come into contact with may not want to socialize with you. We shouldn't be "forcing" small talk at the attempt of (socialization.) Social media & phone detox is a must.
Quite a few times I've talked to a young person out on dog walks and it turns out they have ear buds in, totally oblivious, they kind of look panicked because someone spoke to them 😮
I grew up without the internet. We were so much better back then. We are Zombies now. And I doubt we will ever go back. So long as the internet exists.
Well said. It's not a mystery why disconnection, loneliness and educational attainment are getting worse. It's not just the young who are addicted to their smart phones, but they have no experience of what life was like without them and their brains are particularly vulnerable. The other day I was rode my bike into town and was alarmed by the number of people walking around staring at their screens. It was a very real traffic hazard and I had to use my bell multiple times.
When rural Africans are taken out of their villages (some of these tiny hamlets have less than 300 people in them) and are placed into noisy-dirty-dangerous-crowded cities to cope with the modern frenetic ‘hurlah-burlah’ (say in a 12-hour a day factory to earn money for their family) they start within 3 months to exhibit symptoms of severe emotional-psychic shock which manifests itself into various & sundry physical & emotional illnesses with PTS -like symptoms [often including severe skin-rashes, migraines, vomiting, lack of sleep, memory-loss, confusion, anxiety & depression &c.] Yet whenever these self-same shell-shocked individuals are re-placed back into their more familiar village-settings & allowed to re-connect with family-members, these symptoms often totally disappear within a month or two … only to repeat the cycle each time they leave their birthplaces & the ‘vibration’ they grew up with… I do not believe modern Terran Homo sapiens sapiens (‘human beings’) have been allowed enough time to adjust (‘evolve’) to cope adequately with the sudden acceleration & unnatural rush & pressured-bustle of modern (‘1st world’) societies- I grew up in the 1960s-and used to listen to ‘first-hand stories of the older generations still within living memory’ (e.g. 1895) - the year my grandmother was born for example - I heard many stories about regular townspeople travelling by horse & carriage and used crank-up Victrolas, oil lamps, vegetable-gardens, home-made clothes (and food !) - but they did NOT have radio, television, cell-phones, DVDs, the Internet-or even ball point pens or sliced bread - they of her generation told of a ‘much more relaxed & far simpler & slower time’ when most people walked to work or school or church and took the time to listen to each other … without any of the modern pressures placed on children to ‘succeed’ … It’s the unnatural Frenetic rat-race Starbucks-guzzling soccer-mom scheduled ‘Pace of Modern Times’ especially in the cities (with all their amenities) but even in the suburbs that may lay at the root of so much ‘American Anxiety’ - people have turned from ‘human beings’ (which is what we are) into ‘human doings’ (which is what we are not)… I say it’s high-time for a change
To be fair suburbs do mitigate the evolutionary problems of the city. However the issue with suburbs is nowadays due to technology everyone is online instead of hanging out irl. You have culdesacs which lead to small communities like a village. However now instead of the moms power walking together and gossiping. And the kids screaming on their bikes and the teenagers driving to the mall together they are all isolated. The 9 year olds are on their iPads, the teens are on Instagram and tik tok, the moms are on Facebook or at work. Nobody is talking to their neighbors or their family. When I was a young kid back in the early 2010s things were so social amongst us children. We’d play outside for hours together on bikes and scooters and we’d play manhunt. But in 2012 when we were all 11 we got laptops. Laptops meant we were playing online together at each others houses instead of outside. Then we got phones in middle and highschool (2013-2015) and we all slowly drifted apart. I’m addicted to technology but the rifts it causes in my childhood friendships kinda sadden me. The point i am making is all these leftists will claim the suburbs and their autocentrism is a bad thing for social life. When in reality it’s the tech companies who’ve destroyed the American community. Suburbs used to provide a very small local community where everyone knew their neighbors even as late as the early 2010s
@@LucasFernandez-fk8setech companies are responsible for many of these drastic changes, yes. The medium *is* the message after all. But that "self-sameness" that OP's comment mentions is a critical indictment of suburban life. One of the reasons African villages are better at fostering a strong sense of community is because there is interdependence between neighbors that forces everyone to work for the collective good. They actually *need* each other. The reason tech can isolate suburbans in the first place is because we don't technically need each other to survive. You often see this when a household becomes self sufficient or even rich, they start to withdraw and isolate from the community around them naturally and that sense of community is replaced with a sense of competition.
Love what you shared! It's a traumatizing world as far as I've experienced. I've always longed to live with loving family in a small connected community within beautiful nature. For those of us who are very attuned to energies, vibrations the unseen, life as it is is so very hard to experience.
Dear Nathaniel, DUDE. OMG. YES YES YES. I’ve been following your content for years now, but I’m SO happy you made this film, and made this film NOW. I’ve often felt resonance with what you create but this one resonates on a different level. I was intrigued from the start but I literally said out loud “reminds me of fourth turning” and then you pulled out the book! I too, have been reading the fourth turning and it has me intrigued, scared, hopeless, and hopeful. As a kid I also got annoyed when people said “back in my day” because it was patronizing, but as an adult I too find myself looking back and thinking “things seem simpler then vs now.” In a world that feel like it’s feels like it’s falling apart, I have days feeling debilitated and anxious, and others where I feel motivated to contribute to the change I want to see. Since reading the book I feel like I’ve had this “awareness” where I’m watching earth from space, seeing us humans go through our cycles. Cycles, turnings, peaks and valleys - it does feel like we’ve been here before, crisis, and things will turn up again… but in a world that has learned to track our every click and patience is fading, the need for large change or shift needs to happen faster, but the cycle doesn’t know it, or processes necessary haven’t been Abe to speed u with it. This has me split in 2 ways: on wanting to help the system, the other wanting to escape, run to a small town and try to ignore the world for the remainder of my time. It also feels like there are 2 groups of people: those who are aware,a dare living with intention, and those who are unaware and/or choose to remain unaware. It often feels like those who are unaware, working steady desk jobs and raising nuclear families because that is what is expected and what they were told is the purpose of life - are happier than those who choose to try and live with mindfulness and intention. This has informed my journey with love as well, I’m noticing connections are better when there is a level of awareness. What this means for me though is what you just showed - travel, make art, exercise - focus on the present. Don’t feel like the worlds problems need to be solved today. Though what has been getting to me more and more as of late is just the feeling of like I’m never going to be able to afford a house. It’s a bit scary to now be an adult and ready for that stage… and not seeing an option that makes sense. Also on the filmmaking- you absolutely CRUSHED it with this one, the harsh cold lighting at the beginning contrasted with the soft warm shots at the end. Stellar. Thanks for making this.

Here’s my take: I think it’s a natural feeling to stress about what’s going to happen next. It’s human nature, and I also believe it is a feeling that will inspire advancement. Many times in history where we have landed on hard times, we came out stronger than before. We achieve through the testing of ideals, not by simply wondering if they “would have” worked. Side note: I love your channel, been watching since 2015.
I went to eat out and there was a family playing cards while eating. It was the sweetest thing i saw in a long time ! ❤ so now i try to bring cards with me when i go eat out !

You got that right. I am so sad. Things are not ok. I am older & people say, "why do you care?" I care, I still care about other people, that they will not be helped by others like I was. I care that we are being bared from human interaction, you can not call anyone. A company or service, NO. More n more people tell you, don't call, I am too tired to talk. Anything you try to do, fill out form on the internet, any question? Too bad, figure it out, or forget about it.
Been feeling very existential and dissociated recently and was worried that this was gonna send me into a spiral but this actually made me feel a lot better about a lot of things!
I can honestly say that social media and smart phones are almost completely to blame for the crisis phase that we find ourselves in in 2024. I was born in 1971.. Facebook and the iPhone were born in the early 2000’s. Sadly, I kind of look at my life in two halves: pre and post social media. The contrast is astounding and I feel like critical thinking got lost along the way. So, I praise you for making this video and encouraging people to stop, take a step back and consider who they want to be and what they contribute to the world. Thanks to social media, we now know that there's a g3nocide happening on the other side of the world. I don't think technology is to blame, but rather the corrupt people in power.
I'm of about the same age, and I hear what you're saying but I disagree. People used to have their heads hidden behind newspapers. They ride 1 person per car. I really think (in the US) we lost a lot of socialization when the car took over and we lost group transportation (like streetcars and trains). And on the flip side, with tech, I'm able to connect with people in ways I never could when I was growing up and writing (infrequent) letters. Nowdays I can do video calls with family and friends, which we do now even more frequently since the pandemic got more people comfortable with the tech. So I think the point Nathaniel makes about the cyclical nature of societies makes sense to me, because I think people have said "Kids these days...(don't think anymore, don't have respect, etc)" since Socrates' time. If we want more connection (which I think people do right now), we get to figure out how to make community happen - in person, online, and any other way that brings folks together. (I do agree though, Saskia, that social media has changed things a lot. Like in a learning agrigulture amount of societal change. I'm with you on that.)
I agree. It is pretty easy to see how Facebook & Instagram try very hard to always make controversial/racist/edgy content more relevant in the platform to keep people engaged. Top comments tend to controversial even if they are not the most liked comments. Zuckerber really sucks
As an author I definitely understand needing something to pour your soul into. It doesn't matter what's going on in the world, I can always count on my stories being there for me. That's how I wrote my book Heaven Killer during lockdown. I thought, 'If this pessimistic a-hole can survive his messed up world, I can stay home and figure it out.'

Much is changing very fast and it’s created chaos, disunity, misunderstanding, and a lack of direction for many people. But I believe that after this phase of chaos there will be peace and understanding unlike we have ever seen before.
@@Vivivofi 😂😂 They call me the tarot torturer 👻but fair. Let me try again - life happens in cycles. We go through periods of strict regulation, and loose regulation. Post modernism is about pushing the boundaries of defining “what is good”. The positive effect is that this leads to growth and new perceptions of the universe. The negative effect is that it leaves societies disjointed: people don’t agree on anything so there’s a lot of clashing. My tarot cards(😉) say after the peak of disunity we will have a clearer understanding of our boundaries, and will enter the next phase of the cycle, which will eventually be followed again by chaos and so on and so fourth.
I find that this impending doom feeling also always comes with a possibility for hope. That hope looks different for everyone, but for me personally it's hope for a system in which work isn't the number one thing expected of everyone and a world where community comes first instead of productivity. And I see that communal feeling happening online in response to the world's problems. Now people just need to learn to stop thinking in blanket statements that come from emotional places when a crisis in the world has thousands of layers. I also find more people are open to learning and listening, but that might also just be the people I surround myself with. I have an odd amount of hope, but also an odd amount of dread, because I feel like most people are aware how close we have gotten to a worldwide conflict now. Having friends all across the world and seeing this be broadly the same feeling for everyone is wild, yet reassuring that I'm not going insane. The current state of the world made me finally learn more about other ways countries can be structured and it's been interesting, but I also wish this stress of the current world wouldn't make it so difficult to focus on learning new things. Mindfulness has become difficult, yet definitely helpful. It's easier to forget to breathe currently, but I also managed to open social media pages that stress me out less often and stay on them just long enough to know what's going on and sharing what I feel is important to share when it comes to resources. The internet has been a blessing in all of this in my opinion. Being aware of how greed is ruining the planet and entire countries isn't an internet problem. The internet gave us the ability to finally see it when it isn't happening at home. It's HOW we use or overuse the internet that affects our mental health. The tool itself is uniquely helpful in making people realize a new world finally has to be built somehow and that other people wanna rebuild it too.
The world's problems make me sad. I'm connected to it but I know what I can do and not do. We have to let that heavy burden and realize that the most important thing ever is knowing who you are, what you want and what your mission is in life. Wear it proudly all you can do is be you and try to be flexible and adjust with this unstable world.

Beautiful and inspirational video as always, Nathanial. When I was 22, I fell into a deep, existential-like depression. I read the book “Flow” by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. He shares quite a similar sentiment and it changed my worldview forever. It’s so important to note that the times, your own life, flows like the seasons. Nothing is linear. I’m so happy that you’ve come to this realization and can so beautifully share it with others.
There is a cultural decline in gratitude, especially in younger people. We have so much media and content and attention towards everything that is wrong with the world, and even if they are all true, we fail to acknowledge everything that is working and good happening right in front of us everyday.

Extremely refreshing storytelling, filming, and at least for myself immensely relatable. This video is like looking out to a calming waterfront and taking a breath, relaxing, and reassurance, "thank god I'm not the only one viewing life this way and craving spirituality which is deeper connection with self, nature, and others", sometimes the peer pressure to fit in or feeling like the "other" for craving more from life in our society really brings me down and question myself or if I should bother. This video is like a encouraging reminder and spiritual hug that hope and the world we seek is not so far out of reach. Thank you!

I just got released from jail from 2018 to 2024 6yrs I did and have been out now for 6 weeks and what I saw in my first week blew my mind, firstly 6yrs ago was not like this secondly everyone on the streets looked like they were in fairy land oblivious and on there phones with no connection with one another socially and its sad, I'm glad I'm out and about but I don't like the world were living in right now, people are horrible and out for them self but I don't blame it on half the people in society as its the systems fault 😢
Its been getting worse since covid lockdowns, brotherhood and community has gone to the wayside. I can promise you im probably just as lost as you are. Best of luck and hope you find your path :)

My friend everything that you said it was spot on at least with me. The big difference is I am 63 years old and my husband just passed four years ago which I not able to accept it. He was my rock my true love we had one of our kind friendship/love he was the love of my life now I’m living in a situation that I don’t have any friends I can’t trust people and when I try to trust people, they stab me right on the back it doesn’t matter if it’s a new person or a person that I know for many years what’s going on what happened, is everybody going crazy nuts thank you for the video. I'm 44... And yet I feel exactly the same. I get on well with people 60+ and with younger people. People my own age don't get me - and i really don't get them. It's awful really. I've been out of step in my own generation since I was 21. But it's nice to have found this channel.
The Fourth Turning by William Strauss and Neil Howe is a really excellent book with a fascinating thesis. I would honestly say it is one of the books which has been the most illuminating in terms of my efforts to understand modern history.
Don't worry. It's not that the world is falling apart, it's just that the pristine, prosperous peaceful utopia we grew up in was fake, rare, and temporary.
As a GenXer I can tell you that a pre Internet childhood had its benefits. We could amuse ourselves more easily. Time would move slower. But there was plenty of addiction, neglect, abuse, racism, and violence going on as well. There are no Good Old Days, there are only moments that we choose to remember fondly, woven into a tapestry of every day life. I wish you well in your journey and thank you for the content.

After recent missile attacks here in Ukraine, I found myself stuck in an overwhelming ocean of thoughts and emotions...Not knowing what to do with my life (that even without this war is a separate crisis), what direction to take...when each night you can't know whether you'll wake up or not... Nathaniel, I understand what you're saying and think this is a relatively good message for people who can afford it. However, most people cannot afford the luxurious lifestyle that you live. Yes, it is luxurious to be able to focus on your art and not have to work a horrible job 40+ hours a week so that you can pay off the tens of thousands you owe in student loans. You do work hard at your art and videos, that cannot be denied. However, it also cannot be denied that you are immensely privileged. Most of our issues come from the fact that our society is sick (as you said) and most of us cannot just escape out of that sickness and go live in a chateau in Europe. Most of us literally cannot survive if we "slow down" and are just barely scraping by. The real solutions are systemic and should not be placed on the individual. Our societal systems do not support citizens, they support profits for corporations. That is the real change that needs to happen and the only way we can do that is by connecting as citizens and demanding that from the people who supposedly represent us in government. Climate change will wipe us out if nothing is done. This "fourth cycle" will only destroy us and so I think what we should be calling for is community action, protests, mutual aid, etc.
I agree 100%. Folks like Nathaniel and Johnny Harris never challenge the status quo. Their content is like how to function within capitalist without ever asking does this have to be the way? I’d love for them both to prove me wrong, but it feels like indoctrinated by the status quo
@@Northwest360 Totally agree! I'm not trying to attack Nathaniel, but he definitely has benefitted from the systems in place (aka capitalism). He doesn't challenge the status quo because it has given him so much success. He can turn a blind eye to the reality of the majority because he's one of the lucky few that doesn't have to worry about how he'll pay his rent, crippling student loans, etc. Instead he has the luxury of focusing on self-actualization, following his dreams, traveling to cool places, etc. (Can't speak on Johnny Harris because I don't watch his videos.)
I agree. This "citizen of the world" identity has truly fallen flat in recent months when his voice is most needed. Nathaniel, Johnny Harris, Damon Damonique are creators I had appreciated in recent years for a different perspective but all three have really disappointed. The vagueness of Nathaniel's content especially has just rubbed me the wrong way. It never really touches deeply on any one issue and seems to rely on general platitudes to relate to a larger audience, but misses the mark on nuance.
Nathaniel, this video resonated immensely with me. I applaud you for tapping into your heart (something I am also learning at the moment). I think your capacity of exploring and following this guidance might already be bigger than you believe and you certainly inspire many people with it. My therapist recently told me her reason for doing her work: “If you want to change the world, start melting people’s hearts”.

The story about your parents was beautiful. I wish I had had an example like that growing up. Unfortunately I feel that the decay of our social structure is that the majority of people don’t have the time, resources, or desire to raise children well. This creates broken adults with a bone to pick, or people who are completely checked out.

Lovely video. I think when we make progress in one area (in the world as a whole), another area will always be lacking. When people remember "the good old days", they tend to emphasize the positive. Individuals can work towards finding balance within themselves by discovering their own mechanisms and techniques. The world as a whole is fickle but we must learn to balance ourselves.

Every generation has always felt that 'things' happen to them specifically or that the world changes especially much during their time. There are interesting studies about how after 2009 or so the way we perceive the world changed due to an abundance of information through social media. What I'm saying is that e.g. Europe is living the most peaceful and prosperous time in the history of civilization. Challenges can be solved.

Imo the problem with this cycle-theory is, that climate crisis destroys things permanently, not like in WW2 for example. The biosphere will not just emerge again out of nothing after the crisis, so it will probably not that easy to start a new cycle. I don't know if the book adresses this, would be interesting if yes.

I was riding the subway for the same time again in Korea and I noticed that 99% of people were stuck to their phones. There was no societal interaction, no interest in others, and no curiosity with others. I tend to take a book and read it while riding the subway which prompts the elder generation to interact with me, I do hope that people move away from their phones, towards more that is happening in front of them.

Who is to blame for the addiciton to technology? Individuals or the giant corporations that have made this technology integral to living and even surviving in the world? A lot of tech CEOs don't let their children use the very technology they invented and put into the hands of millions (and profited immensely off of). I wonder why that is....
The phone or all quadrant-shaped computer interfaces are only here for some limited time. They will be exchanged for VR or - much better - Augmented Reality in a few years. That‘s the point we as societies and individuals will change again. Why do I think that?
It‘s quite easy: Our braines and bodies are not made for looking at a screen. It limits us mentally and emotionally. Watching downwards activates emotions for examples. Staring at tiny fonts deactivates our emotions and activates or non-social-pure-rational side etc. Something like that. But if we just start to wear glasses oder little projectors we get back the full range of motion. Not energy-wise (there is still a gap), but at least from our body in general.
Do we need to interact with strangers on a bus? Well - it depens. Often - in the past - people felt alone because they knew noone like them. Today you can find these people online around the world. That‘s wonderful. Make friends with like-minded people. But not just while staring at screens, but by creating wonderful stuff together in augmented reality. That‘s what I think will free us. At least I hope ;)

The decline in socializing since smart phones became common is remarkable. Especially noticeable is the lack of small talk among strangers, for example turning to chat to the person next to you while waiting in line at a store or a concert, talking to the people next to you while waiting for a show to start at a theatre, or on a long train ride or airplane. Also now you see some friends or families waiting for food at restaurants, where everyone pulls out a phone. When I was in high school and college I used to carry a deck of cards and played so many card games with friends while waiting for things.
Exactly, we should be less on phones and more in the real world, unless, necessary! A digital detox, should be a lifestyle! We should try to be more mindful when on devices and give ourselves a break! I remember when phones, were just for calls and emergencies, nothing else, people were more communicative then! I feel now, others don’t want to talk, as much, I mean, it’s not always feasible, but I used to say hello, a lot to strangers, when walking by or at least, smile, some smile back, others grunt, but I don’t do,as much now, as some seem to be in shock, when you say, Hello! Come on, it’s only, Hello! 👋😅☺️
I agree with this. However, everyone you come into contact with may not want to socialize with you. We shouldn't be "forcing" small talk at the attempt of (socialization.) Social media & phone detox is a must.
Quite a few times I've talked to a young person out on dog walks and it turns out they have ear buds in, totally oblivious, they kind of look panicked because someone spoke to them 😮

Well said. It's not a mystery why disconnection, loneliness and educational attainment are getting worse. It's not just the young who are addicted to their smart phones, but they have no experience of what life was like without them and their brains are particularly vulnerable. The other day I was rode my bike into town and was alarmed by the number of people walking around staring at their screens. It was a very real traffic hazard and I had to use my bell multiple times.

When rural Africans are taken out of their villages (some of these tiny hamlets have less than 300 people in them) and are placed into noisy-dirty-dangerous-crowded cities to cope with the modern frenetic ‘hurlah-burlah’ (say in a 12-hour a day factory to earn money for their family) they start within 3 months to exhibit symptoms of severe emotional-psychic shock which manifests itself into various & sundry physical & emotional illnesses with PTS -like symptoms [often including severe skin-rashes, migraines, vomiting, lack of sleep, memory-loss, confusion, anxiety & depression &c.]
Yet whenever these self-same shell-shocked individuals are re-placed back into their more familiar village-settings & allowed to re-connect with family-members, these symptoms often totally disappear within a month or two … only to repeat the cycle each time they leave their birthplaces & the ‘vibration’ they grew up with…
I do not believe modern Terran Homo sapiens sapiens (‘human beings’) have been allowed enough time to adjust (‘evolve’) to cope adequately with the sudden acceleration & unnatural rush & pressured-bustle of modern (‘1st world’) societies-
I grew up in the 1960s-and used to listen to ‘first-hand stories of the older generations still within living memory’ (e.g. 1895) - the year my grandmother was born for example - I heard many stories about regular townspeople travelling by horse & carriage and used crank-up Victrolas, oil lamps, vegetable-gardens, home-made clothes (and food !) - but they did NOT have radio, television, cell-phones, DVDs, the Internet-or even ball point pens or sliced bread - they of her generation told of a ‘much more relaxed & far simpler & slower time’ when most people walked to work or school or church and took the time to listen to each other … without any of the modern pressures placed on children to ‘succeed’ …
It’s the unnatural Frenetic rat-race Starbucks-guzzling soccer-mom scheduled ‘Pace of Modern Times’ especially in the cities (with all their amenities) but even in the suburbs that may lay at the root of so much ‘American Anxiety’ - people have turned from ‘human beings’ (which is what we are) into ‘human doings’ (which is what we are not)…
I say it’s high-time for a change
To be fair suburbs do mitigate the evolutionary problems of the city. However the issue with suburbs is nowadays due to technology everyone is online instead of hanging out irl. You have culdesacs which lead to small communities like a village. However now instead of the moms power walking together and gossiping. And the kids screaming on their bikes and the teenagers driving to the mall together they are all isolated. The 9 year olds are on their iPads, the teens are on Instagram and tik tok, the moms are on Facebook or at work. Nobody is talking to their neighbors or their family. When I was a young kid back in the early 2010s things were so social amongst us children. We’d play outside for hours together on bikes and scooters and we’d play manhunt. But in 2012 when we were all 11 we got laptops. Laptops meant we were playing online together at each others houses instead of outside. Then we got phones in middle and highschool (2013-2015) and we all slowly drifted apart. I’m addicted to technology but the rifts it causes in my childhood friendships kinda sadden me. The point i am making is all these leftists will claim the suburbs and their autocentrism is a bad thing for social life. When in reality it’s the tech companies who’ve destroyed the American community. Suburbs used to provide a very small local community where everyone knew their neighbors even as late as the early 2010s
@@LucasFernandez-fk8setech companies are responsible for many of these drastic changes, yes. The medium *is* the message after all. But that "self-sameness" that OP's comment mentions is a critical indictment of suburban life. One of the reasons African villages are better at fostering a strong sense of community is because there is interdependence between neighbors that forces everyone to work for the collective good. They actually *need* each other. The reason tech can isolate suburbans in the first place is because we don't technically need each other to survive. You often see this when a household becomes self sufficient or even rich, they start to withdraw and isolate from the community around them naturally and that sense of community is replaced with a sense of competition.

I’ve been following your content for years now, but I’m SO happy you made this film, and made this film NOW. I’ve often felt resonance with what you create but this one resonates on a different level. I was intrigued from the start but I literally said out loud “reminds me of fourth turning” and then you pulled out the book! I too, have been reading the fourth turning and it has me intrigued, scared, hopeless, and hopeful. As a kid I also got annoyed when people said “back in my day” because it was patronizing, but as an adult I too find myself looking back and thinking “things seem simpler then vs now.”
In a world that feel like it’s feels like it’s falling apart, I have days feeling debilitated and anxious, and others where I feel motivated to contribute to the change I want to see. Since reading the book I feel like I’ve had this “awareness” where I’m watching earth from space, seeing us humans go through our cycles. Cycles, turnings, peaks and valleys - it does feel like we’ve been here before, crisis, and things will turn up again… but in a world that has learned to track our every click and patience is fading, the need for large change or shift needs to happen faster, but the cycle doesn’t know it, or processes necessary haven’t been Abe to speed u with it. This has me split in 2 ways: on wanting to help the system, the other wanting to escape, run to a small town and try to ignore the world for the remainder of my time. It also feels like there are 2 groups of people: those who are aware,a dare living with intention, and those who are unaware and/or choose to remain unaware. It often feels like those who are unaware, working steady desk jobs and raising nuclear families because that is what is expected and what they were told is the purpose of life - are happier than those who choose to try and live with mindfulness and intention. This has informed my journey with love as well, I’m noticing connections are better when there is a level of awareness.
What this means for me though is what you just showed - travel, make art, exercise - focus on the present. Don’t feel like the worlds problems need to be solved today. Though what has been getting to me more and more as of late is just the feeling of like I’m never going to be able to afford a house. It’s a bit scary to now be an adult and ready for that stage… and not seeing an option that makes sense.
Also on the filmmaking- you absolutely CRUSHED it with this one, the harsh cold lighting at the beginning contrasted with the soft warm shots at the end. Stellar.

I care that we are being bared from human interaction, you can not call anyone. A company or service, NO. More n more people tell you, don't call, I am too tired to talk. Anything you try to do, fill out form on the internet, any question? Too bad, figure it out, or forget about it.

I can honestly say that social media and smart phones are almost completely to blame for the crisis phase that we find ourselves in in 2024. I was born in 1971.. Facebook and the iPhone were born in the early 2000’s. Sadly, I kind of look at my life in two halves: pre and post social media. The contrast is astounding and I feel like critical thinking got lost along the way.
So, I praise you for making this video and encouraging people to stop, take a step back and consider who they want to be and what they contribute to the world.

Thanks to social media, we now know that there's a g3nocide happening on the other side of the world. I don't think technology is to blame, but rather the corrupt people in power.
I'm of about the same age, and I hear what you're saying but I disagree. People used to have their heads hidden behind newspapers. They ride 1 person per car. I really think (in the US) we lost a lot of socialization when the car took over and we lost group transportation (like streetcars and trains). And on the flip side, with tech, I'm able to connect with people in ways I never could when I was growing up and writing (infrequent) letters. Nowdays I can do video calls with family and friends, which we do now even more frequently since the pandemic got more people comfortable with the tech. So I think the point Nathaniel makes about the cyclical nature of societies makes sense to me, because I think people have said "Kids these days...(don't think anymore, don't have respect, etc)" since Socrates' time. If we want more connection (which I think people do right now), we get to figure out how to make community happen - in person, online, and any other way that brings folks together. (I do agree though, Saskia, that social media has changed things a lot. Like in a learning agrigulture amount of societal change. I'm with you on that.)
I agree. It is pretty easy to see how Facebook & Instagram try very hard to always make controversial/racist/edgy content more relevant in the platform to keep people engaged. Top comments tend to controversial even if they are not the most liked comments. Zuckerber really sucks
As an author I definitely understand needing something to pour your soul into. It doesn't matter what's going on in the world, I can always count on my stories being there for me. That's how I wrote my book Heaven Killer during lockdown. I thought, 'If this pessimistic a-hole can survive his messed up world, I can stay home and figure it out.'

My tarot cards(😉) say after the peak of disunity we will have a clearer understanding of our boundaries, and will enter the next phase of the cycle, which will eventually be followed again by chaos and so on and so fourth.

the best thing I've learned is to start preparing to live like they did in the past. Gardening, community, substantial/frugal living
I find that this impending doom feeling also always comes with a possibility for hope. That hope looks different for everyone, but for me personally it's hope for a system in which work isn't the number one thing expected of everyone and a world where community comes first instead of productivity. And I see that communal feeling happening online in response to the world's problems. Now people just need to learn to stop thinking in blanket statements that come from emotional places when a crisis in the world has thousands of layers. I also find more people are open to learning and listening, but that might also just be the people I surround myself with. I have an odd amount of hope, but also an odd amount of dread, because I feel like most people are aware how close we have gotten to a worldwide conflict now. Having friends all across the world and seeing this be broadly the same feeling for everyone is wild, yet reassuring that I'm not going insane. The current state of the world made me finally learn more about other ways countries can be structured and it's been interesting, but I also wish this stress of the current world wouldn't make it so difficult to focus on learning new things. Mindfulness has become difficult, yet definitely helpful. It's easier to forget to breathe currently, but I also managed to open social media pages that stress me out less often and stay on them just long enough to know what's going on and sharing what I feel is important to share when it comes to resources.
The internet has been a blessing in all of this in my opinion. Being aware of how greed is ruining the planet and entire countries isn't an internet problem. The internet gave us the ability to finally see it when it isn't happening at home. It's HOW we use or overuse the internet that affects our mental health. The tool itself is uniquely helpful in making people realize a new world finally has to be built somehow and that other people wanna rebuild it too.
The world's problems make me sad. I'm connected to it but I know what I can do and not do. We have to let that heavy burden and realize that the most important thing ever is knowing who you are, what you want and what your mission is in life. Wear it proudly all you can do is be you and try to be flexible and adjust with this unstable world.

Beautiful and inspirational video as always, Nathanial. When I was 22, I fell into a deep, existential-like depression. I read the book “Flow” by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. He shares quite a similar sentiment and it changed my worldview forever. It’s so important to note that the times, your own life, flows like the seasons. Nothing is linear. I’m so happy that you’ve come to this realization and can so beautifully share it with others.
There is a cultural decline in gratitude, especially in younger people. We have so much media and content and attention towards everything that is wrong with the world, and even if they are all true, we fail to acknowledge everything that is working and good happening right in front of us everyday.

Extremely refreshing storytelling, filming, and at least for myself immensely relatable. This video is like looking out to a calming waterfront and taking a breath, relaxing, and reassurance, "thank god I'm not the only one viewing life this way and craving spirituality which is deeper connection with self, nature, and others", sometimes the peer pressure to fit in or feeling like the "other" for craving more from life in our society really brings me down and question myself or if I should bother. This video is like a encouraging reminder and spiritual hug that hope and the world we seek is not so far out of reach. Thank you!

I just got released from jail from 2018 to 2024 6yrs I did and have been out now for 6 weeks and what I saw in my first week blew my mind, firstly 6yrs ago was not like this secondly everyone on the streets looked like they were in fairy land oblivious and on there phones with no connection with one another socially and its sad, I'm glad I'm out and about but I don't like the world were living in right now, people are horrible and out for them self but I don't blame it on half the people in society as its the systems fault 😢
Its been getting worse since covid lockdowns, brotherhood and community has gone to the wayside. I can promise you im probably just as lost as you are. Best of luck and hope you find your path :)

My friend everything that you said it was spot on at least with me. The big difference is I am 63 years old and my husband just passed four years ago which I not able to accept it. He was my rock my true love we had one of our kind friendship/love he was the love of my life now I’m living in a situation that I don’t have any friends I can’t trust people and when I try to trust people, they stab me right on the back it doesn’t matter if it’s a new person or a person that I know for many years what’s going on what happened, is everybody going crazy nuts thank you for the video. I'm 44... And yet I feel exactly the same. I get on well with people 60+ and with younger people. People my own age don't get me - and i really don't get them. It's awful really. I've been out of step in my own generation since I was 21. But it's nice to have found this channel.

The Fourth Turning by William Strauss and Neil Howe is a really excellent book with a fascinating thesis. I would honestly say it is one of the books which has been the most illuminating in terms of my efforts to understand modern history.
Don't worry. It's not that the world is falling apart, it's just that the pristine, prosperous peaceful utopia we grew up in was fake, rare, and temporary.

As a GenXer I can tell you that a pre Internet childhood had its benefits. We could amuse ourselves more easily. Time would move slower. But there was plenty of addiction, neglect, abuse, racism, and violence going on as well.
There are no Good Old Days, there are only moments that we choose to remember fondly, woven into a tapestry of every day life. I wish you well in your journey and thank you for the content.

You are catching fleeting moments of life and its meaning in a jar of sunshine. And the melody from Wong Kar-Wai's " In the mood for love" movie was almost unbearably beautiful . As an artist to an artist - Thank you for the inspiration!
Sometimes it really seems that something sends us the message through other people at the precisely correct moment... After recent missile attacks here in Ukraine, I found myself stuck in an overwhelming ocean of thoughts and emotions...Not knowing what to do with my life (that even without this war is a separate crisis), what direction to take...when each night you can't know whether you'll wake up or not... Thank you, Nathaniel, I will try to put more soul and meaning into what I do. Your videos are like fresh air in this stifling chaos...
Nathaniel, this video is a masterpiece. Some videos are entertaining, some teach a trick, but few capture truth beautifully. This, and your Fool video, are transcendent. Bravo, and thank you.
Nathaniel, I understand what you're saying and think this is a relatively good message for people who can afford it. However, most people cannot afford the luxurious lifestyle that you live. Yes, it is luxurious to be able to focus on your art and not have to work a horrible job 40+ hours a week so that you can pay off the tens of thousands you owe in student loans.
You do work hard at your art and videos, that cannot be denied. However, it also cannot be denied that you are immensely privileged. Most of our issues come from the fact that our society is sick (as you said) and most of us cannot just escape out of that sickness and go live in a chateau in Europe. Most of us literally cannot survive if we "slow down" and are just barely scraping by. The real solutions are systemic and should not be placed on the individual. Our societal systems do not support citizens, they support profits for corporations. That is the real change that needs to happen and the only way we can do that is by connecting as citizens and demanding that from the people who supposedly represent us in government.
Climate change will wipe us out if nothing is done. This "fourth cycle" will only destroy us and so I think what we should be calling for is community action, protests, mutual aid, etc.
I agree 100%. Folks like Nathaniel and Johnny Harris never challenge the status quo. Their content is like how to function within capitalist without ever asking does this have to be the way? I’d love for them both to prove me wrong, but it feels like indoctrinated by the status quo

@@Northwest360 Totally agree! I'm not trying to attack Nathaniel, but he definitely has benefitted from the systems in place (aka capitalism). He doesn't challenge the status quo because it has given him so much success. He can turn a blind eye to the reality of the majority because he's one of the lucky few that doesn't have to worry about how he'll pay his rent, crippling student loans, etc. Instead he has the luxury of focusing on self-actualization, following his dreams, traveling to cool places, etc.
(Can't speak on Johnny Harris because I don't watch his videos.)
I agree. This "citizen of the world" identity has truly fallen flat in recent months when his voice is most needed. Nathaniel, Johnny Harris, Damon Damonique are creators I had appreciated in recent years for a different perspective but all three have really disappointed. The vagueness of Nathaniel's content especially has just rubbed me the wrong way. It never really touches deeply on any one issue and seems to rely on general platitudes to relate to a larger audience, but misses the mark on nuance.

The story about your parents was beautiful. I wish I had had an example like that growing up. Unfortunately I feel that the decay of our social structure is that the majority of people don’t have the time, resources, or desire to raise children well. This creates broken adults with a bone to pick, or people who are completely checked out.
Nathaniel obrigado for sharing your gift to this world which does feel like it is falling apart. You might not have the answers but as you said the first step is to look within, you hold the answers, you just need to sit long enough to listen to receive its message. Love and light.

Lovely video. I think when we make progress in one area (in the world as a whole), another area will always be lacking. When people remember "the good old days", they tend to emphasize the positive.
Individuals can work towards finding balance within themselves by discovering their own mechanisms and techniques. The world as a whole is fickle but we must learn to balance ourselves.
It feels a lot better to hear someone acknowledge this.

His life is perfect, he is good looking, young, born on the right side of the border, then moved to another right side of the border and now lives in one of the most desirable cities of the world. Has a rich and very loving and supporting family, found his calling at a young age and is now doing what he loves for living, yet talking about stress and the existential crisis of crumbling worlds! Dear Nathaniel we are indeed suffering, but not for all the “reasons” you think we are.

Every generation has always felt that 'things' happen to them specifically or that the world changes especially much during their time. There are interesting studies about how after 2009 or so the way we perceive the world changed due to an abundance of information through social media.
What I'm saying is that e.g. Europe is living the most peaceful and prosperous time in the history of civilization. Challenges can be solved.
Watched this just to comment on how I appreciate the thought you put into the thumbnail lighting/colour - a gradient of green tones on the right to the peachy warm on the left - really cool! Or maybe it was just an accident haha!

Imo the problem with this cycle-theory is, that climate crisis destroys things permanently, not like in WW2 for example. The biosphere will not just emerge again out of nothing after the crisis, so it will probably not that easy to start a new cycle. I don't know if the book adresses this, would be interesting if yes.

Look man, all well and good, but ‘finding purpose’ in menial jobs that exploit MOST of us is a big ask. I don’t find this videos message particularly relevant to a broader working class whose only capacity to dream seems to be squandered by dicking around on youtube watching content creators who aren’t really living the same way….
