Taking on Canal locks SOLO | Music Making | BOAT LIFE [Ep 123]

- Today I start my cruise aboard The Rum Wench up the Atherstone Lock flight, single handing the Canal Locks and moor in the town so I can go exploring. I find out about the amazing Ball Game that happens on Shrove Tuesday every year and would love to return during that time. I also start to compose a new tune and show a little about the process of composing music on a narrowboat.

After selling my house to experience an alternative lifestyle I bought a canal boat and a camper van which as a solo female who loves to travel, gives me the best of both worlds. I have recently got myself a new addition to the crew, a fabulous companion - my little rescue dog Bonny who is an absolute joy. I also work full time off grid from my tiny home and trade at canal festivals as The Pirate Boat.

With all the crap going on over here across the pond, it's really nice see there is still sanity and serenity out there. I try to avoid and block out all the crap when I can but, you're just not always able to get away from it. Your videos are a nice break for me, even if it's just for a few minutes.

Aaaaaah, when you shut your engine off ... on my boats, when I was safely moored up to a dock at the end of the day, or tied to a buoy on the water, or safely anchored out ... when I knew the boat was good for the night and I could then shut the engine off ... that was so sweet, such a sweet sound of the engine burbling down to "off" ... the quiet was so peaceful ... life was so good. Thank you for sharing that on your boat, so sweet. 🙂 Love the ditties.

Your positivity helps more people than you realize Heidi. My twin sister died in may of cancer and i often have low night's. Thank you for showing us a bit about how you record your music, I found it very interesting. One idea that may or may not appeal to you; if you could record some of the plethora of sounds that surround you each day (e.g. the steady beat of your diesel engine, the sound of your new ratchet winding, the creak of the lock paddles raising, the rush of water through sluice gates, the dawn chorus and perhaps even Bonnie's breathing and so on) then perhaps you could use your virtual mixing desk to convert them into percussion or backing tracks (altering the playback speed to suit your music) and using the various controls to alter the sounds to something more musical and less 'real'.
Thank you for all your work in shooting and editing your videos, they provide enjoyment for many people, including me.
I have tried and it sounded awful…. I did mention it in one of my earlier vlogs …. Most of my tracks do have the tempo of the engine though as the engine is often running charging the batteries when I’m making the music … I will try to do a live thing one day though 😂😂

Aren't people great, happy to offer help though the locks. I stayed in an old lock-keepers cottage, now a B&B, some 10 years ago, I was cameraman at a chum's wedding. On the Burton on Trent canal, and having watched the narrowboats rise up over the hedge during breakfast and with loads of time in hand I walked the few foot to the lock and assisted some 4 or 5 boats through. My 3rd gt grandfather (in the late 18th century) was a narrowboat owner on the Grand Union out of Long Eaton & Sawley but I know little about the actual physical workings of locks but its all common sense and you watch and learn. The "last" boat through the feller asked if I'd like a ride up to the next lock so as it was some way and they stopped to offload some rubbish half way I got off there and had some exercise walking back to base to meet up with my mate. But that was after the lassie asked if I'd like a cuppa and within minutes a mug of tea appeared with a plate of biscuits, bless them, so kind. Small world, only turned out their son lived just a few miles down the road from mine back home (some 180 miles south). Love your posts Heidi, keep safe you two, smuggler Frank. 🙂

So cool that you stopped off in my spiritual town of Atherstone and got your hair cut in my wife’s barber … can’t believe, you were ‘going up, and I was going down’ between the Ashby and Coventry Canals. When I moored at Sutton Cheney, we had a lot going off all at once. One things for sure, Heidi, you have the best boating channel on RUclips, I am sure there is drama for you, but you never show it here and in doing so, you keep the magic/the positive side of boating alive and well. Brilliant also that you are promoting ‘band camp’ and I may at some point have a narrowboat ditty for you to read in ‘the rear entrance’. Buy Bonny something nice. We love you ❤

And I love watching lock vids as I learn from all.of them...I took my boat out as a brand new solo cc-er day before yesterday, tackled a flight of 7 double locks - first 4 were a sh**show! Discovered issue with solar when I'd finished and had to come back to marina so did the 7 all over again the following morning - luckily with a lovely experienced neighbour boater who crewed back with me, the legend! Baptism of fire but I learned sooo much! Locks dont phase me quite so much now but jeez, was I knackered when I landed! The joys of boating as you say! T😂
